Good-looking shoe but my toes were cramped, and the low front opening hit the joint of my big toe in a painful way.

Well, proving that feet come in many shapes, for me these shoes fit well [to help orient others, I wear an 8 AA or N in a Van Eli]. See my comments on different lasts further down in the review however. To my eye, Fortun is also a very elegant shoe, especially on the foot. And an all leather shoe is such a wonderful luxury of fit and comfort! In general, I give Fortun high marks all around. I ordered the brown suede with bronze snake. The brown was a very dark "black brown", just the tone that works for me and the bronze snake has just enough glimmer to be glamorous without crossing over into the vaguely trashy. I see Zappos now has Fortun available in a black calf with snake and will see if the budget will run to it, but I am glad I got the deepest french roast brown first! I have marked True to Size, because I always take an 8N in Van Eli. But in some shoes I wear a 7.5 AA, so they consistently run 1/2 size short compared to some brands. Re fit and Van Eli. I think Van Eli must have several distinct lasts. It would be great if they would name or number them and make clear to the customer which last is being used for each shoe/boot model. This season I ordered several pairs of Van Eli shoes, fortunately, because, of the lot, 1 dress shoe style (Fortun) and 1 boot style (Roxie) fit well. The others were a disaster for me. I think it was definitely a last issue as in no case did the shoe/boot seem too short or too narrow, but rather the vamp of the shoe pressed down on my big toe from above. Fortun and Roxie both seem to have a more voluminous toe box. In other words the "roof" of the shoe was higher. Although I believe putting the name or number of the last model right on the shoe insole was common practice for better shoes in the 1950s, the only company I know of which continues to identify which last is used for which model of shoe is Munro (which also manufactures here in America). Bless them. I invite all readers to join me in pushing the shoe companies to identify their various lasts and making choosing what will fit easier and more consistent!

I finally found basic yet fashionable black pumps with nice sized heels to replace my old faithfuls. I have big, wide feet and a bunion to boot. These pumps accommodate all that and actually makes my feet look petite. They are pure magic.
Brands I'd also recommend: Naturalizer

This shoe looks really nice, and seems like it would be comfortable, but the fit is off. It runs small and narrow.
