Great look, not good for wide feet or slippery terrain. I'm so sad. I loved the way these shoes looked, and after speaking with a Zappos rep, thought that the wide lacing system would be good on my wider forefoot, but no. I would have had to order a larger size (which they were out of in the color I wanted), and then the mechanics of the shoe wouldn't have fit my arch, etc. These shoes gave me foot cramps after just 20 minutes of light trail walking. And they may have thick treads, but they are very slippery, even on morning dew covered trails/rocks. They also are not waterproof, Gore-Tex or not. They were extremely water resistant, but not waterproof. I would not recommend these for anything other than running around town. Definitely not for the woods or trails.

Perfect pair of sneakers! I walk a lot on everyday basis, and these shoes are very comfortable throughout the whole day. Out of my 10 pairs of sneakers, these are my favorite one. Comfortable, cool looking, and waterproof. There’s only one thing, they tend to be slippery on wet manhole covers.

Out of the Box and on the trail - Out of the box comfort, lightweight, good traction and styling, great lacing system and waterproof. The perfect running shoe for the trails or street in any weather.

OK shoe; doesn't feel supportive - I guess I'm hard to fit. Another North Face model in the same size felt too small. This feels very roomy--in fact, "mushy." The laces going way out on the sides do not substitute for a supportive construction. However, I travel a lot and need a waterproof, breathable sneaker that can do city streets as well as light hiking, and this will do. I wish it weren't so ugly (the wide lacing and the gray heel).

Additional Brand Information

In 1966, two hiking enthusiasts founded a small mountaineering retail store in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach. The company soon became known as The North Face, a retailer of high-performance climbing and backpacking equipment. (The name was selected because in the Northern Hemisphere, the north face of a mountain is generally the coldest, iciest and most formidable to climb.) In 1968, The North Face began designing and manufacturing its own brand of high-performance mountaineering apparel and equipment, and in the early 1980s, extreme skiwear was added to the product offering. By the end of the decade, The North Face became the only supplier in the United States to offer a comprehensive collection of high-performance outerwear, skiwear, sleeping bags, packs and tents.

Using all types of proprietary technology, TNF provides The North Face jackets, The North Face clothes, The North Face pants, The North Face bags and The North Face shoes with quality, durability, and above all else, functionality. Throughout the years, The North Face jacket and outerwear division has set the standard in the industry. With styles such as The North Face Denali jacket and vest, The North Face Apex Bionic jackets, and The North Face Nupste jackets, The North Face jackets proves time and time again that they are at the forefront of high-performance apparel.

Their dedication to footwear is no different. With the different categories of trail running, hiking, mountaineering, and most recently ultra running, The North Face shoes division continues to raise the bar for innovation and quality in their shoes. Using proven technology such as Gore-Tex® and Gore-Tex® XCR®, their insulated footwear can sustain use in low, sub-zero temperatures, and with the innovative Boa® technology, users can have a precise fit with the ability to adjust quickly and on the fly. All features that make The North Face shoes a leader in the technical footwear arena.

The North Face’s dedication to quality can also be seen in their gear and equipment. The North Face sleeping bags with a high fill of goose down for warmth and multiple lengths. The North Face daypacks and expedition packs such as the Recon and Jester that are rugged, durable, and can hold all you gear. The North Face tents that will withstand extreme temperatures on Everest and Mt. Rainier. If you have a desire to test the limits, The North Face equipment will help you on your adventure.

Great custom fit, not good on ice - Bought these as a winter walking/commuting shoe that would accommodate my orthotics. I have a wider right foot and found all the winter-soled "Ice Pick" North Face to be too painful - the shape of the last is not generous enough in the ball of the foot for the "duck" foot shape. The wide lacing system on this shoe permits enough give to be comfortable. The overall slush performance is good, but these are very slippery on smooth surfaces if the sole is even a little wet. On hard ice they don't grip at all, but that is what Yaktrax are for. Sharp-looking & good pronation support.

A great fitness shoe for winter - I am 56 and walk 4 miles outdoors, rain or shine, several days a week for fitness. This shoe was very comfortable the very first time I wore them (and I went the full route). I especially like the fact that they have both the close to the tongue and wide spaced eyelets. I used a combination of both for a really custom fit. I did have a problem with my left ankle rubbing on the outer side because the shoe was too high. (My left foot is a half size smaller than my right foot due to bunion surgery.) The problem was resolved by inserting a 1/4 inch heel lift in both shoes to keep things equal. That did not affect the great fit and comfort at all. I was very glad because I really like the shoes. They are true to size for me, with a roomy toe box. They look great (mine are blue) and they are a very comfortable, stable shoe for fitness walking in wet/winter weather conditions. My feet stay dry and warm! My son is a runner and he intends to get a pair based on my recommendation. He wears orthotics and I think these shoes will accommodate them.

Great outdoor shoe! These shoes are exactly what I was looking for! They are comfortable (incredibly!), water resistant, and extremely durable. They are a little wide looking on, but the comfort more than makes up for it. This is a great alternative to a running shoe for outdoor activities.

Extremely comfortable and durable. I walk 3 miles 7 days a week. These shoes are great. They offer very good support, are waterproof, which works well for wet roads and very comfortable. They are also great for walking in the woods. These shoes offer great stability. This is my second pair and I will buy them again.

Love these! I have a low arch and work 8-10 hour days standing on my feet filling prescriptions and my feet had been killing me! These shoes were the answer. They look great with work pants and jeans.

Fabulous shoe - I'm a nurse and I have bursitis in one of my hips. I did a search for a good shoe for my problem and it led me to this particular shoe; and, let me tell you, Mr. Google knows what he's talking about! I LOVE these shoes. My hip pain has decreased dramatically, not to mention just general leg fatigue/pain from working 12 to 16 hour shifts is minimal. I've gotten so many complements & inquiries from coworkers--they usually ask what brand they are (and of course where I got them), and often question if they are a tennis shoe. I tell them it's a mix of a tennis/hiker shoe--but honestly, I'd wear these for almost anything they're so comfy! By the way I got the blue ones & it's a beautiful color.

Great for over-pronation - I purchased these as well as a pair of Acsis for a return hike to Zion and Bryce National Parks. I ordered both solely because their descriptions on Zappos stated they were for an over-pronation problem. The Acsis were very cute, but for some reason hurt my heel. These North Face Ultras were perfect. However, their bulky look may put off some people.

Walker/Hiker - I bought the shoe to train for a 60 mile hike. It was a perfect shoe for walking on the road or cross country, and held up well in wet weather. My daughter took them from me and is using them for her indoor trainers and she loves them. They have lots of support and are very well made.

Fantastic Shoe! I have been searching for a shoe I can be comfortable in. I have a medium width forefoot, with a very narrow heel, and no arches, (think duck foot). It has been a challenge. Thanks to Zappos my search is over!!! The North Face Ultra has finally ended my quest. These shoes meet all my criteria: I can adjust them to work for me!! They didn't need a breaking in period, very solid construction, great traction, felt very true to size, light, no hot spots, waterproof and even look good. Excellent arch support! Zappos customer service even gave me a web site to look at to make sure I could find the right lacing configuration for my needs. As always, Zappos has the best selection and customer service anywhere!!

Very Pleased - These shoes are great! I walk five days a week, and from the very first day of wearing these shoes there was no "breaking in". With my job, I'm out in all weather and all surfaces, and I am very pleased to keep dry feet in the rain, and no slipping due to the aggressive soles. I highly recommend these shoes. The lacing is great also, to adjust for your foot width.

Nice light hiker - No break in required. These are a great step up from a trail runner with a little more traction and ankle support, yet not a serious boot. Perfect for light hikes. True to size, I did have to tighten the laces so they fit more snug in the width, but they did adjust fine. They still look wide on the foot, but that's my only complaint. Lightweight and comfy. Fab shoes - I have been looking for something light and waterproof for awhile. They had a baptism of fire - an extremely wet weekend in Yosemite. My feet were totally dry and extremely comfortable. No breaking in reqd. I have also worn them on a warm day and my feet did not get too hot.

Love them! These shoes are so great; they fit like a glove and are true to size. They feel like slippers, unlike other hiking boots I have bought in the past. Great price and I received them in 2 days!! Bravo Zappos!
