Indeed, a near-perfect backpack. Overview: I'm 5'1" and didn't find the backpack too burdensome to carry. Primary use, grad school. Price: expensive, but every North Face product I've owned has lasted. Practically, it fits my 13" MacBook (in the laptop slot), 1 1.5" binder, 1 large textbook, 2 novel-sized books (in the main compartment), and plenty of odds and ends with room to spare, like an assortment of pens and highlighters, chapstick, a large Moleskine planner, and a big checkbook-sized wallet (in the front two organization compartments). When I have more small novel-sized books to carry, I can usually stuff 1 or 2 more novel-sized books as well. Pros: although it fits well on petite and average-height women, it also looks fine on men. My 5'11" husband will carry it for me on day trips, and because I bought the black, it works for either gender. The two most handy mini-organization pockets are about 3"x 5", perfect to fit my cell phone and iPod and other last-minute "stash" items. The tuck-away hip straps make it versatile for both school/work and hiking.

I love this backpack. I'm back in school after 30-some years, and have to carry heavy textbooks around. I was using an old, inexpensive backpack that was killing my back, shoulders and I even felt it in my knees. This pack is especially structured for women and was worth every penny! I'm still carrying a heavy load, but it doesn't feel like my back's about to break.

I love this backpack. I bought and returned 2 others before I got this one. I doubted the need for a woman's backpack, but it fits my body awesomely. I have a short torso and this pack rides just where it should, plus great padding. The laptop sleeve is great. The configuration of various storage options is great. This one is going to work for me for a long time.

Great woman's backpack! I'm petite (5'1") and it still seems a little large, but not as big as other backpacks that I've tried. There's lots of organizational space. It's perfect for someone like me who takes the metro downtown to classes with plenty of textbooks, binders, and usually a sweater or umbrella. It all fits and doesn't kill my back. I'm not yet sure if it's worth the cost, I'll have to see how long it lasts!

This backpack is awesome. It has a whole bunch of pockets (more than I could even use) and a lot of space, but even when packed full it is pretty compact. I travel a lot, and it always fits easily under the seat, which wasn't the case with many other backpacks I've had. Overall, this is a great backpack, comfortable to carry, and I get lots of compliments on it.

This is my third North Face back pack in 2 months. My daughters keep stealing them. This one is for me and I will not let it go. My 13 inch MacBook Pro fits in laptop sleeve with room to spare. The front to pockets are excellent for organizing. I keep pens, checkbooks, mail, chargers and so much more. The middle pocket holds my planner and two notebooks with ease. The fit is perfect for my frame; I am 5'8. Love this back pack.

Naturally Zappos delivered my order in pristine condition, but I was especially surprised with how many freaking compartments there was in this backpack! It's only the beginning of July, and I'm already stoked about going back to school. With my 13" laptop, I still have room for a few folders and notebooks in the sleeve. The quality is worth the money, and it will be a definite step up compared to the Jansport I've had since high school. Thanks again, Zappos!

This backpack is amazing! There are so many little places to keep things organized. The straps are super comfy. I have easily overloaded it with books, my computer, and a sweater, and my back was okay. I looked around before choosing this one and I am very pleased I chose it. I was hesitant on the all black color since I tend to be super girly, but I love it. It is very professional.

For everything that I put in there (laptop, binder, planner, book, snacks, umbrella, graphing calculator, makeup/emergency kit, school supplies, batter charger for laptop) it does not weigh me down. It is very comfortable, although my back does get sweaty since I wear it high and close. The two side water bottle pockets are great and on the side of those is another pocket. I put my phone in there since it is an easy reach. It feels like I have to cram things, as if the multi-layers become bulky and causes to become less spacious. And of course Zappos came with right on time to my door!

I got this backpack for college about a month ago. My cheap backpack from a department store broke, so I needed a knew one, and I was also having really bad back problems from the weight of my old backpack. I kept going back and forth between The North Face Surge or The North Face Recon. I listened to the reviews and got the Surge (they said the Recon was more for hiking). Although the Surge is a bit pricey, I'm so glad I got it. This backpack has lots of room and is great on your back. At first the shoulder straps felt a little strange, but not at all anymore. I recommend this backpack to any college student looking for lots of room, something that doesn't hurt your back, and looks great. Also, they were not kidding about all the pockets and storage!

The perfect backpack! It fits everything plus more, which if you are like me, is exactly what I needed! I am in college and bring multiple books, notebooks, folders, food, make-up, cell, water bottle, glasses etc and yes it can get a bit crammed, but that's usually a result of me not cleaning it out often enough!

I tried more stylish backpacks before this one, but they didn't hold much. This bag fits a 6" stack of books and binders, lunch, sweater, etc, without looking bulky. It fits my 5'4" frame well, and the black looks nice. If you have to carry a lot, but still want to look good, get this bag.

Lots of room for gadgets and a great area for your laptop. Not all of my bigger college textbooks can fit at the same time so that is a setback.

We wish that colors for woman's packs were more basic. Red is not a basic or even a rust red, but instead is rosy pink or purple. We prefer the man's colors... but want the fit of woman's pack.

The backpack is very cute. I love the color. It is very comfortable to wear and the organization is nice, but there just isn't as much room as I thought there would be for books. I can fit a 3" binder in the large pocket and it fits snug. I dont carry my laptop very much because its too heavy and not a lot fits in the laptop pocket, a few folders or a thin book maybe. All and all it is a good backpack I would buy it again, but if you need to carry much more than what I have said you may need to reconsider something with a little more room.

I love this backpack. I am 5'7", and love the way it fits on my back. I am glad they made the women edition of this, I think it truly makes a difference. I carry around a 5.6lb 15" laptop, AC adapter, extra battery pack, 750cc water bottle, cell phone, camera, etc. Add a textbook to that, and you can imagine how heavy this can get. Somehow, this pack manages to distribute the weight in a way where it doesn't feel like you're carrying a huge rock on your back. I've previously owned a Recon II, Slingshot, and a Modem from the North Face prior to this, and the lightweighted-ness of this Surge cannot compared to the rest, it just blows me away. Oh yeah, and it fits a lot. Love all the compartments, especially the laptop one. Not only is it padded, but the bottom of the compartment is actually elevated by a few inches compared to the middle (largest) compartment so when you put your bag down, it doesn't directly come in contact with the ground. Genius! Love the extra protection. It's nicely put together also. Nice material.

Not the prettiest backpack ever, but it does hold all 3 of my giant law books as well as my laptop which was essential for me. It's great, doesn't look too bulky and I like that it's designed for a woman. Very glad I got it.

I haven't even received my backpack yet, b/c i was out of town unexpectedly, and ups had to ship it back to Zappos. That's my fault. I just had to write a review b/c of the great customer service that I experienced when i called Zappos to get my order sent again. I wish I remembered her name but it was like she actually wanted to help me! The price had gone up, but she worked it out so I didn't have to pay the difference, enrolled me in the VIP program so i could get free next day shipping. This was my first time ordering from Zappos but it will not be the last! Oh and I'll write another review once I actually have my backpack. Haha.

Very sturdy and well made backpack, but too many small pockets for me. Overall, it just isn't as roomy as my previous 29L backpack was, even though this one is supposed to be 30L. A couple of textbooks and folders, my laptop plus power cord, supplies like pencils, plus a few personal items like makeup made for a very tight fit. For my needs as a student, I think this backpack would be better suited for me if it had less pockets that were bigger, rather than a bunch of little pockets that get cramped very quickly. As far as quality, though, this backpack is exceptional. It really stabilizes a heavy load very well, and everything from the fabric to the foam in the shoulder straps feels like it will last for ages. Also, if you have any question about the color of the accents on the squid red model, they are pink. They look a bit orange/pink in the pictures here, but they are pink pink pink in reality. I won't be keeping this particular backpack since it doesn't meet my needs, but I'll definitely keep The North Face in mind. Great quality product.
