The Ultra GTX is everything the Montrail Hardrock used to be. This is a fantastic shoe for a serious trail runner who likes to go fast on difficult, changing, uneven and rough terrain. That means lots of non-horizontal footing, stream crossings, rocks, boulders and knobby roots on single track hiking trails. The shoe has a very stiff sole and a lot of support on the upper. It's light. I imagine they might be too warm for summer running, but I haven't had them long enough to run in the warm season. Most trail running shoes are street shoes with some toe and heel protection. This thing is the Humvee of trail shoes.

I am a golf course superintendent, and am out working in all types of weather. Therefore I need a waterproof shoe and this particular shoe that I purchased is not waterproof! I spent quite a bit on a shoe that has been in my closet for some time now taking up space. The shoe is comfortable and the soles are great, but my feet get wet walking through the morning dew. This is a worthless shoe to me and I am out the money.

I got these for my boyfriend. He walks a lot for work. Sometimes standing in a riser room full of water, so he wanted something waterproof also. He loves these shoes, says they are the best. I've already bought him a second pair & now he's asking for a third & not because they are wearing out. Just because he wants to be prepared if North Face discontinues them.

Purchased my first pair about 18 months ago. They are still going strong. This shoe is true to fit. Great year round use. The Gore-Tex version Ultra 104 do keep your feet dry. I have since purchased 3 more pair because they are my daily shoe choice. Very comfortable to wear all day on the trail or at my shop. Some Gore-Tex shoes cause my feet to sweat. Not so with these. Long story short, I love them.

Additional Brand Information

In 1966, two hiking enthusiasts founded a small mountaineering retail store in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach. The company soon became known as The North Face, a retailer of high-performance climbing and backpacking equipment. (The name was selected because in the Northern Hemisphere, the north face of a mountain is generally the coldest, iciest and most formidable to climb.) In 1968, The North Face began designing and manufacturing its own brand of high-performance mountaineering apparel and equipment, and in the early 1980s, extreme skiwear was added to the product offering. By the end of the decade, The North Face became the only supplier in the United States to offer a comprehensive collection of high-performance outerwear, skiwear, sleeping bags, packs and tents.

Using all types of proprietary technology, TNF provides The North Face jackets, The North Face clothes, The North Face pants, The North Face bags and The North Face shoes with quality, durability, and above all else, functionality. Throughout the years, The North Face jacket and outerwear division has set the standard in the industry. With styles such as The North Face Denali jacket and vest, The North Face Apex Bionic jackets, and The North Face Nupste jackets, The North Face jackets proves time and time again that they are at the forefront of high-performance apparel.

Their dedication to footwear is no different. With the different categories of trail running, hiking, mountaineering, and most recently ultra running, The North Face shoes division continues to raise the bar for innovation and quality in their shoes. Using proven technology such as Gore-Tex® and Gore-Tex® XCR®, their insulated footwear can sustain use in low, sub-zero temperatures, and with the innovative Boa® technology, users can have a precise fit with the ability to adjust quickly and on the fly. All features that make The North Face shoes a leader in the technical footwear arena.

The North Face’s dedication to quality can also be seen in their gear and equipment. The North Face sleeping bags with a high fill of goose down for warmth and multiple lengths. The North Face daypacks and expedition packs such as the Recon and Jester that are rugged, durable, and can hold all you gear. The North Face tents that will withstand extreme temperatures on Everest and Mt. Rainier. If you have a desire to test the limits, The North Face equipment will help you on your adventure.

I wear a size 14, and these shoes are great. I had originally purchased the North Face Hedgehog GTX, but was unhappy with them and went with these shoes instead. In my opinion, these are superior in every way. Super stylish, comfortable, and perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities.

Takes a while to break-in - This shoe cramped my little toes for a while, but after that has been a great shoe. Might be just a bit small.

Amazing support - The one thing about this shoe that know one really advertises is that it has the most torsionally rigid soul - which means that if you have plantar fasciitis or otherwise need great arch support - this shoe is for you. Its really well constructed, water resistant and super comfortable. Buy it.

Love the North Face product! Very comfortable and breathable. The Gore-Tex material is a plus, also. I highly recommend these shoes for someone who will be standing up all day or walking on rugged terrain.

104 GTX Review - I love the shoes. They fit great and are very comfortable. The only negative is there are two places where the stitch doesn't seem quite right. It doesn't at this point seem to be anything that might cause a problem.

Good shoe, great service - I'm not a runner. I'm using these for competitive dog events. They have kept my feet dry, and maintained traction in less than ideal conditions. They are more comfortable than the field hockey shoes I had been using. I'm pleased with them.

Light in weight but felt bulky - While this shoe is light in weight, it felt bulkier than other North Face hiking shoes. It probably doesn't help that the laces stretch so far across the top of the shoe. The shoes are comfortable - just not as comfortable as other North Face shoes I've had in the past.

First pair of North Face I've owned, highly recommend. Very comfortable, hold up well and have great looks, sporty. Get comments on them all the time. You won't be disappointed with these shoes.

Good Get - This is one comfortable shoe. While I have not taken it on any type of rugged hike or terrain, for the casual city walker, I would recommend this to anyone. The only problem I had was with the lacing layout.
