In 1966, two hiking enthusiasts founded a small mountaineering retail store in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach. The company soon became known as The North Face, a retailer of high-performance climbing and backpacking equipment. (The name was selected because in the Northern Hemisphere, the north face of a mountain is generally the coldest, iciest and most formidable to climb.) In 1968, The North Face began designing and manufacturing its own brand of high-performance mountaineering apparel and equipment, and in the early 1980s, extreme skiwear was added to the product offering. By the end of the decade, The North Face became the only supplier in the United States to offer a comprehensive collection of high-performance outerwear, skiwear, sleeping bags, packs and tents.

Using all types of proprietary technology, TNF provides The North Face jackets, The North Face clothes, The North Face pants, The North Face bags and The North Face shoes with quality, durability, and above all else, functionality. Throughout the years, The North Face jacket and outerwear division has set the standard in the industry. With styles such as The North Face Denali jacket and vest, The North Face Apex Bionic jackets, and The North Face Nupste jackets, The North Face jackets proves time and time again that they are at the forefront of high-performance apparel.

Their dedication to footwear is no different. With the different categories of trail running, hiking, mountaineering, and most recently ultra running, The North Face shoes division continues to raise the bar for innovation and quality in their shoes. Using proven technology such as Gore-Tex® and Gore-Tex® XCR®, their insulated footwear can sustain use in low, sub-zero temperatures, and with the innovative Boa® technology, users can have a precise fit with the ability to adjust quickly and on the fly. All features that make The North Face shoes a leader in the technical footwear arena.

The North Face’s dedication to quality can also be seen in their gear and equipment. The North Face sleeping bags with a high fill of goose down for warmth and multiple lengths. The North Face daypacks and expedition packs such as the Recon and Jester that are rugged, durable, and can hold all you gear. The North Face tents that will withstand extreme temperatures on Everest and Mt. Rainier. If you have a desire to test the limits, The North Face equipment will help you on your adventure.

My first TNF jacket, and I'm very impressed! It's a high-performance jacket that still keeps an understated, classy look. Regarding fit, I found it a little tight in the armpit if I wanted to layer a sweater underneath. Otherwise, the cut looks great. I wore it in a variety of conditions before deciding to keep it. In the course of a week, New England weather served up this variety: About 50F: With just a t-shirt underneath, I was very comfortable. 25F, 20mph wind: With a t-shirt and light sweater underneath, it was chilly. Though with brisk walking, I warmed up quickly. 16F: Shoveling snow with a t-shirt and light sweater underneath, I was sweating about 10 minutes in. I had to zip down the jacket. For such a light jacket, it keeps you surprisingly warm. I have no problem wearing this in high-20's to low-30's weather, and it keeps out wind incredibly well. Wear a baselayer underneath your pants and you'll be able to tackle all but the nastiest bits of winter weather.

The pros: Keeps wind out (caveats; see below). Looks fantastic. Does not wrinkle. Repels water fairly well (until the repellent wears off). The cons: Fit is very strange: the medium fit me perfectly in all areas but one - the armpits were practically digging into my skin. Sizing up a single size resulted in massively baggy sleeves (I settled on a medium, I am 6'1", 180 lbs, athletic build). Smell: What the hell is that smell? Does not keep cold out, at all, ever; blocking the wind is fantastic, but if you are in anything under 50, layer up or prepare to shiver Overall: It's a decent amount of money to spend on something this basic, and if all your needs are simply wind and not cold/heavy rain, then you will be fine. Also, make sure your shoulders are freakishly thin at the ball joint.

Perfect! I bought it for my husband who hates bulky jackets. This jacket is great because it keeps him very warm, is waterproof, looks very nice, and it is lightweight. I highly recommend it.

Nice Jacket. Warm enough for the winter with only a sweater under. Great stile. Washes well. Sized correctly.
