Let me preface this by saying that I have always felt that you pay a lot for the name when buying TNF products, but they have won me over for footwear. After rolling my ankle one too many times both on and off trail, I spent days searching for a boot with excellent ankle support that was built with enough cushioning and foot support for my 200+ pound frame and I kept coming back to these. I have put about 50 very rigorous, rocky, wet, and steep miles on these boots since I bought them and they are definitely awesome. The ankle support is awesome; I have been in several situations where I could feel my ankle start to roll and this boot stopped it immediately. The tread is excellent whether it be on cold slick rocks or warm wet trails. I hike near, on, and over 20+ waterfalls every week and my other boots were constantly slipping, but not these. I have been caught off guard several times on slippery rock areas and was in the middle of split second mental preparations to begin sliding when I realized that these boots were holding me perfectly in place. In water they are truly waterproof, unlike many products that claim to be waterproof, these really do keep the water out. I have even been in water deeper than the boot is tall and the majority of the time my feet still don't get wet, it shocks the hell out of me every time. As far as arch support, I cannot comment, as I have completely flat feet, so no boots have enough arch support for me, but these don't seem to have any less support than a standard boot. These boots are so good, that while I'm prepared to spend more on a pair of boots to use on the Appalachian Trail, I honestly have not been able to find anything that tops them. As long as they will be warm enough (they are not insulated), they will be coming with me!

I took these boots on a long 12 day hike up in Maine to hike the last 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail, also known as the hundred mile wilderness. When I first wore these boots, I was sore because I completely forgot to break them in, but as the days went on and the boot became adjusted to my foot, I stopped complaining and started to brag because my boots were amazing. I would be completely comfortable going through patches of mud and be unafraid of my comfort because my boots were surprisingly very waterproof, and only got wet once when the water came over the top of my heel. I can remember numerous occasions when the treads on these boots gave me more confidence than I had ever felt before, and the comfort was ridiculous. Also, on a purely shallow note, I think the blue/gray ones look really cool. Anyways, even though they are gross and beat up after a long trek, I still wear them whenever I need them, and they are always ridiculously comfortable. After 5 years of recent hiking, and 5 different boots (I have dogs), these were easily the best boots I've ever used, and were invaluable on my backpacking trip.

Sturdy Hiker - Recently got these hiking boots. They seem to be well constructed, with support for the ankles. I've only used these for a short period of time, but they seem comfortable and have not given me any blisters. They do seem a bit hard or stiff, but maybe after wear they will break in nicely. So far I am happy with my purchase and can recommend these boots to others.

Most comfortable boots I've ever owned - I recently wore these boots while hiking Mt. Whitney trail in California (22 miles round trip over rugged terrain), and didn't have any problems whatsoever. I haven't had a chance to test how water proof they are, but as light and comfortable as they are, I've got no complaints and would buy them again.

Great boots - These boots have the quality I have come to expect from North Face. I have already gone on 3 long hikes with them and they are tremendous. Plan on wearing thick socks as they are roomy inside. They provide great support yet are surprisingly light weight.

Additional Brand Information

In 1966, two hiking enthusiasts founded a small mountaineering retail store in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach. The company soon became known as The North Face, a retailer of high-performance climbing and backpacking equipment. (The name was selected because in the Northern Hemisphere, the north face of a mountain is generally the coldest, iciest and most formidable to climb.) In 1968, The North Face began designing and manufacturing its own brand of high-performance mountaineering apparel and equipment, and in the early 1980s, extreme skiwear was added to the product offering. By the end of the decade, The North Face became the only supplier in the United States to offer a comprehensive collection of high-performance outerwear, skiwear, sleeping bags, packs and tents.

Using all types of proprietary technology, TNF provides The North Face jackets, The North Face clothes, The North Face pants, The North Face bags and The North Face shoes with quality, durability, and above all else, functionality. Throughout the years, The North Face jacket and outerwear division has set the standard in the industry. With styles such as The North Face Denali jacket and vest, The North Face Apex Bionic jackets, and The North Face Nupste jackets, The North Face jackets proves time and time again that they are at the forefront of high-performance apparel.

Their dedication to footwear is no different. With the different categories of trail running, hiking, mountaineering, and most recently ultra running, The North Face shoes division continues to raise the bar for innovation and quality in their shoes. Using proven technology such as Gore-Tex® and Gore-Tex® XCR®, their insulated footwear can sustain use in low, sub-zero temperatures, and with the innovative Boa® technology, users can have a precise fit with the ability to adjust quickly and on the fly. All features that make The North Face shoes a leader in the technical footwear arena.

The North Face’s dedication to quality can also be seen in their gear and equipment. The North Face sleeping bags with a high fill of goose down for warmth and multiple lengths. The North Face daypacks and expedition packs such as the Recon and Jester that are rugged, durable, and can hold all you gear. The North Face tents that will withstand extreme temperatures on Everest and Mt. Rainier. If you have a desire to test the limits, The North Face equipment will help you on your adventure.

Just returned from a 60 mile backpacking trip in Sierras of California. The boot performed well; carried almost 50lbs up 7K feet in 10 miles the first day with minimal issues with no break in time. Lightweight with good ankle support, a great alternative to the heavy boots of yesterday. Also kept my feet dry in multiple stream and river encounters over 5 days.

Too painful to walk in - I bought these in preparation for doing the west coast trail. They felt great in the store and walking around campus. Last weekend I took them out for their first hike. It was a moderate eight or nine kilometer hike with about 600m of elevation. Five days later my fibula is still too sore to put the boot back on my foot. It put way too much pressure on my fibula.

Great Boots - Excellent Boots. I would highly recommend this boots to anyone who is going for backpacking, walking etc. Very comfortable and fits perfectly with thick sox. Looks great on jeans, shorts and pretty much any kind of sporting outwear. Only thing is little bit expensive but I figured once I get this I don't think I would have to buy another one at least few years.
