I have somewhat wide feet (sometimes I require a wide width running shoe; sometimes not), and this fact alone drastically reduces my options when it comes to winter boots. I also have had multiple foot surgeries, which makes it difficult to find comfortable shoes/sandals/boots. I envy women who can wear any shoe they come across. This winter, my 15-year-old snow sneakers finally bit the dust, and it has taken quite a lot of work to find snow boots that are both functional and comfortable. When I tried on the Cumberland IIs at a local store, I knew I had found something special. The cushioning and support are better than many other brands of snowboots; the width is appropriate for my feet and also will allow for heavier socks; they are easy to get on and off; they feel quite lightweight. I did find that the ankle felt a little loose, even when I fully tightened the laces. Ideally, a snow boot would cradle my heel in the same way a running shoe does. However, I have tried on enough boots this winter to know that I probably can't have everything that I want in a boot -- at least, not if I want to have boots to wear this winter! Overall, I appreciate that the Sorel brand runs true to size. Other brands (pricey ones) that I tried on ran so small (length) and narrow that it was almost laughable.

I bought these boots last year and they are worth every penny spent. Last winter we had some temps of 20 below zero and these boots were very warm and they look great with leggings and skinny jeans. I would buy them again.
I'd also recommend: Columbia

I really love these boots. They are very comfortable and extremely warm. I like how solid they feel and the fact that my feet stay warm and dry. I usually wear between a 6.5 and a 7, I sent back the 6.5 because it was a bit snug tight, the size 7 was perfect, expecially with thicker socks.

I ordered and tried on 4 pairs of Sorel boots and 1 pair of Merrell (because of Zappos amazing return policy), and these are the winners: cozy, comfortable and very sturdy -- not to mention cute in Turtledove. FYI for those of you with slender, normal-width feet and ankles: the Sorel boots run very wide. The Cumberland is the only snug fit.

No more granny shuffle! These boots are incredible. They feel like ski boots with blown-in insulation and extremely flexible. Warm (and dry) without socks (and not too loose) in a 2° snow storm. If these ever fail, I will buy another pair. I have worn them without YakTrax and not slipped on the ice when the dogs take me for a walk. Zappos comes through again!
