I've been back to running after years away. I've always loved running, but the 12 mm heel to forefoot drop of most training shoes stressed out my tibialis anterior (front shin muscle) so much that I couldn't train properly at all. Foot and knee pain also. In the last few months I've solved that problem with cushioned shoes that have only a 4 mm drop. However, I have been nursing some kind of ankle strain/sprain that hasn't been healing. It bothers me every run. I'm mid-way through "Born to Run" and was inspired to go for a truly flat, minimal shoe. This shoe forces you to plant your foot the way humans have planted their feet while running for the last few 100 thousand years: mid to forefoot strike rather than the jarring heel strike that Nike invented in 1972. Zero ankle pain on my four miler today. Awesome. My feet will need to get a couple of new calluses since I'm sockless in the Hattoris, and I need to work on my downhill running form, but I'm super-happy. By the way, I've been wearing Sanuks for the last year, so my feet have gotten stronger, and my tendons and muscles are more stretched out. If you wear heeled shoes and, especially, regular dress shoes, you're really crippling your feet and will have a harder time transitioning to a shoe like the Hattori. Flat shoes resolved my low back aches as well. Do some research on how to run naturally, make the transition intelligently, and I think it will likely all go well. Lastly, I'd really recommend truly zero drop shoes. I started off a few months ago with a pair of New Balance MT 101s that are cool, except they have that 4 mm of drop, which, for me, made mid-foot striking more difficult to achieve.

Brands I'd also recommend: Sanuk, Simple, Vivobarefoot

This is an initial impression review...buy the shoe a half size larger than what you normally wear! I wear size 9 and 9.5 was perfect. Got the Saucony Hattori yesterday and ran 5 miles in them this afternoon. I am biased toward Saucony and have run in them for decades. Wanted to try something different but running barefooted is out and I don't think Lunas are what my 67 year old legs need. First, if you are a heel striker and intend to remain so, forget this shoe...the whole idea here is to land on the ball of your foot with the foot directly under your body (check out Youtube). Second, when you first put this shoe on be prepared for something totally different. Feel like water shoes. Very little cushioning and absolutely no correction for either pronation or supination...these shoes allow your feet to be (and function) like the feet you were born with. And there is no arch support. Would suggest you walk a bit in them before you run any distance to get an idea of what you have on your feet. Third, while on the road you'll experience "things" in your feet, legs and hips you haven't felt before...not necessarily good nor bad, just different. For what it's worth, I have an nagging heel problem that manifests around mile 3 with conventional shoes that wasn't there with this shoe. So, based on first impression...my legs are not as fatigued, both arches on both feet are a little tight as are quads and hamstrings and the usual heel problem is not present. Also, the normal ankle discomfort after a run is not there. I don't want to recommend this shoe based a single 5 mile run but if you want to try something a little different, I believe you'll find this is something worth exploring.

I have weirdly wide pinky toes, so this is a great alternative to the Five Fingers. I wear them working out at the gym, and I love how I get to work on my foot-strike form on the treadmill, walking around, etc. (I'm recovering from plantar/heel pain.) I'd say fit it true to size if you wear without socks. Thanks, Saucony and Zapppos for strengthening my feet!

I love my Saucony Kinvara, probably the best running shoe I have tried. I was excited to try the Hattori, given its true minimalist design. Overall a great shoe. Heel is comfortable. The midfoot is well locked down by the single Velcro strap. Toe bow is wide and allows some splay of the toes, which is a good thing in a show that attempts to mimic barefoot running. The shoe is great for short, tempo runs or speed work. It will not accommodate a heel striking gait, nor does is have the support for distances over 10 miles or so. This shoe will certainly strengthen your feet and your calves and you'll fell it the first few time out. The only thing I haven't likes is the forefoot is a bit loose in the shoe and caused blisters on the ball of my feet the fist few time I wore them for 5K distances. After wearing the shoes more this has been getting better, but still a problem I never had with the Kinvaras even with greater than marathon distances. Though once again, the Hattori really wasn't designed for distance, so its probably OK.

I love these shoes. I am a mobility impaired runner and I had tried the Vibram's years ago when they were still brand new to the USA. I didn't like them because of the lack of protection for my feet, which are very sensitive due to my condition. I have a degenerative nerve disease and stepping on even a small rock hurt like heck. The Hattori affords excellent protection. My first run was spent looking for rocks, cracks, pine cones, etc. and I found I could run on pretty much anything. They're extremely light (4-5 ounces) and comfortable. I also didn't have any problems adjusting to them: My 2nd run was a 10-mile trail run (maybe should've gone with a color other than white, but they didn't get very dirty) and my third run was the half marathon at the Eagleman 1/2 Ironman. I have a very high arch and was happy that the Hattori provided a bit of arch support. I highly recommend this shoe and will buy another pair soon, just in a different color!

As a minimalist runner, I've worn Vibrams and New Balance but I was surprised when the Saucony's popped up on my screen and I immediately had to have them. They aren't quite as minimal as the other shoes I mentioned which means they definitely have a place in any minimalist's shoe closet. For beginners, they are spot on to teach forefoot running without the top of the foot pain and for seasoned minimalists, they are amazing for standing or walking for long periods on very hard surfaces. (Think work or the mall.) They are very light and breathable but surprisingly rugged. The comfort is amazing but hard to describe. The shoe has SOME cushion but not so much that a seasoned minimalist would feel the sluggish resistance of a conventional running shoe. However, the cushion is considerably more than the New Balance Minimus. Over all, in my mind, it's the perfect all around athletic shoe. It's also a bit wider than other minimal shoes which is awesome for my wider foot. It really just feels like a high quality sock on heavy, plush carpet: very nice!

I have worn these for one month and love them. By far the lightest shoes I have ever worn. Very stylish, my 18 year-old daughter is jealous, other runners ask about them, and heads turn. Warning, these are for minimalist or barefooters, the shoes provide no support. I wish they offered day-glow orange.

Runs at least a half size small. Very snug fitting all the way around. Running in them felt much like my Vibrams. I was looking for something "in-between" traditional and minimalist and these were too close to the Vibram feel for me.

I am 46 years old, 6'3", 185 lbs and am migrating from the Kinvara. The Hattori is very comfortable for me, being a mid-foot striker. After about 30 miles on the Hattori, cycling my Kinvaras into the rotation feels totally wrong, even though the Kinvara drop is relatively minimal. These are easily the most comfortable shoes I have run in. My only concern is for how the Hattori will wear, with the exposed foam on the outer and mid for-foot. Wear so far is visibly obvious but unnoticeable under-foot; time and miles will tell.

I have to say this Saucony looks great. I like the overall design and the neatness. This Saucony Hattori speaks to me directly. However when i put it on, my toes were very visible from the outside. So in conclusion this shoe is good in looks and design but week in comfort and depth. They were a little small for its size.

I have tried most of the barefoot style running shoes that are popular these days, but these are the best I have found. They have an excellent balance between minimalism and comfort. I just love the fact that there are no laces, and they are incredibly light. Certainly the best barefoot running shoes I have found in terms of comfort. I would highly recommend these to anyone wanting to join the barefoot revolution as they are an excellent transition shoe between the very minimal and something like the Nike Free shoe. Great shoe!

Truly love this shoe. It's my new travel shoe. I travel a lot. Light, but with enough support for most runs. Wouldn't put it on the trails in Boulder, but for sub-6 mile street runs, it's perfect. Also to pad down to the gym in the hotel. They run snug and while I don't typically go sans socks, that seems to be the call here. It's still the honeymoon, so not sure how it will wear, but I'm going to get a back up for more casual wear. This thing is kind of a bright, stretchy miracle. p.s. Zappos is the bomb. Our company, Naked Pizza, uses their customer service as the barometer.

I was a little worried about buying a true shoe to run in since I only run in FiveFingers, but I’m going to school in the mountains and need a little bit of extra coverage. That being said, these shoes truly are zero drop--they are dead flat! Look at the Nike Free or the New Balance Minimus and they aren’t zero drop, so it’s difficult to run in a barefoot style. My biggest complaint is that the rubber bits at the toe and ball of the foot cause the ground feel to be lost, so you really have to focus on your form. However, I don’t know if this is true, but I compared these and my FiveFingers, and I swear these are lighter. It’s amazing! Beware, though, these are not made for people with wide feet. The toe box is going to feel a little bit small if you have a wide foot, but it expands after a little while anyway, so it’s not that big of a deal. They’re just a little difficult to get on. Overall, these are the best minimalist running shoes I can find for the price. If you want a true minimalist running shoe, go with this one. It’s awesome!

First of all, I ordered these shoes at 4pm and got them by 4pm the next day! I even used standard shipping. Zappos is amazing, I get my shoes within 2 days every time I order. As for the shoes, they feel amazing. I am loyal to Saucony and wanted to transition into a "barefoot-like" shoe from my current running shoes. This one is great because there is still a little cushion, especially because I run mainly on pavement. I have only run in them once, but have worn them around a few times and they are so comfortable. No socks of course, and it took over an hour for my feet to start to get hot. I wanted the green color so I ordered the men's size comparable to mine and they fit great!
