I bought these for some unloaded, but brisk hiking in Colorado. I tried on about six pairs of boots before I settled on these. They were also the least expensive boot that I tried, by half of some pairs. The moment I put them on I knew they "were it." Without ever putting them on again until I was breathing rarefied air, I did a 7 mile hike. The boots felt like they were the only boots I'd ever had and this was our thousandth mile together. Since then I've wore them for every hike, including a couple of short loaded jaunts. (45-50# range) Nary have they missed a step, I would go so far as to call them "confidence inspiring" in rocky, off-camber stuff and damp, leafy stuff. I haven't put them into any "swamp donkey/hard core arkansas mud" situations, but I'll add to the review if I "get" that opportunity. On some purely technical the laces are good, but I've had some untying when I want to loosen the upper, but nothing to make one crazy. The tongue stays nicely centered, doesn't want to sag into the toe box and has a loop to assist. (I haven't needed it yet, but most boots need the help in "old-age") The eyelets don't "look tough" but I've had no issues with them and I like that they are riveted and pivot with the lace. The mid-boot locking lace guide is also excellent but has a little learning curve to it's operation. Toe cap is minimal, light, and sufficient. So far the sole of the shoe has been down-right excellent, I've very interested to see how it ages here in the flint rocks. I gave the styling 4 stars as I think they're OK and that's not why most people are buying this boot--they were not the best looking boot that I considered--again it's the wrong metric on which to measure this boot. If you want an excellent boot, at and excellent price delivered tomorrow without any "boutique boot rigamarole" click "add to cart" and prepare to be impressed!

This boot is one of the best. Salomon boots get the utmost respect in my household. Neither myself nor my husband has ever tried a Salomon boot that we didn't love. That is especially impressive since he and I have very different "foot types" and different pet peeves about shoes. Like many other reviewers have said, you hardly even need any break-in time in these. They feel great right away, and then last for years. My last pair went up and down the Grand Canyon three times, and on several backpacking trips and many other day hikes. The metal cleat/clamp/hook things that hold the laces near the ankle -- those are very well designed. They actually clamp the lace in place, which really does allow you to lace your lower foot area into one level of tightness, and then lace the ankle area either tighter or looser, and the two portions (foot and ankle) are isolated and can have independent tightness/compression. It works really well! Boots from other brands have little hooks on the ankle but the laces just slide through freely in either direction. Final note: i watched somebody in a store pick these up and go "oh these are way too stiff." If you get that impression, then please just put them on your feet before you make a final conclusion. They do feel stiff in the hand, but they mold to your feet so well that you will realize that you feel support and protection but not stiffness or inappropriate restriction of motion. The insoles are very cushioned, too, which gives these the opposite of a stiff feeling once you have them on.

My boyfriend is an avid hiker and outdoorsman, and he typically wears out a good pair of ($200+) waterproof hiking boots in a year's time. He decided he was ready to try a pair of Salomon to replace his beloved Danner and Meindl boots. The Salomon boots showed up quickly and in excellent condition (as always, thanks Zappos!) and he was eager to try them out. He took a short 1-hour walk around the farm on a rainy day, and upon his return to the house he discovered that his socks were soaked in the toes, and the outer material of this hiker had actually ABSORBED the moisture rather than repelling it, as any waterproof boot would normally do! If you get your nerve up to try the Salomon, keep in mind that if you're going for the waterproof feature, it's an absolute FAILURE for the money, and you will spend your money better on a Danner or Meindl product (these have withstood 2+ years of daily hard use). On the upside, these fit perfectly like a sneaker, straight out of the box. Since there isn't a way to return these after the wear and tear the boots have taken, they'll be kept for dry day use only! Good luck!

MY SALOMONS FELL APART EIGHT MILES INTO YELLOWSTONE. Do you see that grey material along the top of the sole? It disintegrated. The sole then separated from the boot. Yes, the shoes were out of warranty. So, they are great for one hike, but you never know when they are going to quit on you. The same thing happened to my son's boots that were not quite three years old. Salomon had no appologie due to age of both pair.

With 30+ years of hiking and backpacking experience, these are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn - right out of the box! After waterproof application (Nikwax), they can go anywhere. I am susceptible to pronation problems and am really happy with the ankle support. Also weight to ruggedness and strength is great.
