Salomon Comet 3D GTX®
Excellent fit based on sizing. The boots are very comfortable out of the box. Arch support is 'normal' but since I install my own orthotics, that isn't an issue. At first the traction was poor even though they come with fairly large tread lugs...but after walking in them for a day, the hard outer surface ablated and traction increased significantly. Per the ventilation, I purchased these for summer wear. They are a little warmer than my Vasque Breeze GTX...but they are sturdier. Plus, I like the styling a little better so I put up with the slight increase in warmness. One thing I do dislike are the long laces and their tendency to untie themselves. In this price range, I would have expected laces with the built in football-shaped bulges that keep them tied. But overall, these boots are excellent. Once I wear these out, I will probably buy another pair.
I'd also recommend: Vasque

After wearing the boots only twice on flat terrain, I went on a 16 mile backpacking excursion in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. The pack weighed about 45 pounds and the gain of elevation was over 3,000 feet in six miles. These boots were fantastic, with absolutely no issues. The break-in period is almost nil. I did order them half a size larger so that I could wear a pair of thicker Smart Wool socks. The boots ran true to size. I own two other pair of Salomons and I would highly recommend them to anyone. The cost is a little higher than some other similar boots but in the end they are well worth the price!

There are four things I look for when buying new hiking boots: (1) they must fit my very narrow feet, (2) must be lightweight, (3) must be ready to wear straight out of the box (I invariably wait till the shoes I'm wearing are falling apart before buying a new pair.) and (4) should not be enticing to my shoe-chewing dog. My new Salomon Comet GTXs are my fourth pair of these incredible hiking boots. They are, quite simply, the best hiking boots I've ever worn. The fit is great, its light weight belies the boot's durabilty and the boots can be worn on a 3-mile mountainside hike as soon as you get them out of the box they came in. My only knock on the Comet GTX is the flimsy pseudo-insole provided by Salomon, but most hiking boot manufacturers don't offer anything better. To sum up, Salomon's Comet GTX handily satisfies three of my four hiking boot requirements. I've yet to find a boot that my dog doesn't find chewable, so the Comet GTX didn't fare better or worse than any other boot on my fourth criterion.

A bit hard to break in right out of the box. Well made. Laces, as in most boots, are way long! Tried tucking them in the tongue or cuff of boot and got a serious rub on ankle and shin. With that, again, well made, sturdy, if they hold up, may buy another pair, and just switch out the laces. Hate the long laces, but that's just me.
