Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra

I've only had them for about a month and these are as good as I had hoped so far. The lacing system stays tight and if you don't feel like lacing them, they make great slip-ons. I bought them for trail running but wear them more often since they are so comfortable. After reading reviews about them being a bit narrow, I opted for the E width, which fit my slightly wider feet perfectly. If you normally order an EE width, you should look elsewhere.

These are great shoes for my cross-country walks. I especially like the unique shoe string design which allows me to quickly tighten them.I had a similar pair prior to this pair and they lasted about 1 year, but I wore them morning and afternoon for my daily walks through the rough terrain where I live. Even though the unique shoe string design makes them easy to use on the shoes, the only drawback I see with the shoes are the shoe strings. Once they break, it is impossible to replace them in the functioning form they were originally intended. I had to find thin shoe strings and thread them through the loops and tie them. I couldn't see throwing the shoes away because of the problem with the shoe strings. These shoes will definitely outlast the shoe strings so be prepared to find thin, tough shoe strings to replace them when the original strings break.

Best shoes ever! I bought the bright yellow XA Pro 3d Ultras & they look great. Everybody but my wife loves them. Great cushioning, great stability, and feels like they run low to the ground. I like them so much I want to order a pair in another color!

I have a wide foot. It is hard to find shoes that feel great the first time I put them on without any "break-in" period. These shoes felt perfect from the first wearing. Very well made and very comfortable, excellent shock absorbent quality for hiking on rough terrain. I highly recommend them.

The Salomon Techamphibian 2 is a great shoe, very comfortable and holds up well. I wear them as a casual every day shoe in the summer instead of sandals.

I love these shoes! After trying on about 40 pairs of similar "athletic mary janes," which were surprisingly uncomfortable, I ordered these. They are far better constructed than any other shoe I tried. They are incredibly comfortable, and I find all sorts of reasons to wear them now that I have returned from the travels I purchased them for. The swamp fizz color is great. Although the price was more than the others I tried, I now know they are worth it. I'm ordering them in more colors!

I just returned from my hike out of the Grand Canyon with these shoes. One of my concerns going in was how my widening, bunion-laden feet would fare. These shoes were superb!!! I wore them daily for three weeks of hiking. They are light, offer great support, and can be adjusted easily. Also, you can't beat Zappos! I ordered about 10 pairs of hiking shoes to try (a private shoe salon in my family room!). They arrived the next day; I made my selection, and sent the rest back. Very efficient with timely refund. Thanks!

I've had several pairs of Salomon shoes in the past, and despite buying the same size, these really do feel a half-size larger than my older pairs. The arch support is farther forward, everything is too big. But, I've loved my former pairs so much I may just go get the smaller size!

Salomon XA Comp 3 GTX®

Overall Rating: (4 stars)

This shoe, XA Comp 3 GTX, and the XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX are nearly similar (with the exception of the price). I wanted to discern a difference before my purchase and learned that the Ultra has a thicker sole, hence many reviewers give that shoe generally more positive reviews for durability. Both are equally breathable and waterproof. It's a simple 'what you pay for is what you get.' If you're an avid outdoor enthusiast and want a lot of mileage from a shoe, then I would probably suggest the Ultra model. Otherwise, this XA Comp 3 GTX model is very reliable. I am satisfied with them: The fit is snug and secure, the lacing quick and efficient (reminds me of my Chacos), the outer sole and chassis offer stability and traction and last, have aesthetic value.

This is a cloud on your foot...I have flat feet and this shoe is a blessing. I recommend this shoe to anyone...flat feet, high arches...this is my second pair of Solomon’s, and I am now convinced to only buy Solomon’s for my outdoor shoes...walking, hiking etc. from now on. BUY THIS SHOE!!!!! You won't regret it... and the nice thing about Zappos is if you buy it and don't like it... there is free shipping both ways! YAY!

The most comfortable shoes I have ever worn on the trail. I paired these with a set of Sole insoles. It has totally taken care of my back aches and leaves me feeling energized after a 10 mile hike. You won’t be sorry if you decide to replace your old hiking boots with these great trail shoes! And... they do awesome here in the wonderful wet weather we get in Seattle!

I love the idea of these shoes. Great concept, imperfect execution. The tread and the quick lace system are both great, the shoe itself is great and has a very hard toe, which I love. The thing that is terrible about this shoe is the adjustable straps in the rear. They constantly loosen up. They ALWAYS loosen up! When I was breaking my shoes in by walking around my office, I noticed the straps loosening. I returned them (great customer service by Zappos) and now have a new pair which seems to be having the same problem. I haven't been able to find a comparable shoe, so I think I'm just going to keep these and see if I can get creative with some glue or stitching to keep the straps in place. If it weren't for the loosening straps, this would definitely be a 5 star shoe for hikers, bikers, walkers, casual, etc.

I bought these shoes from Zappos after trying them at a local sporting goods store. The store didn’t have the correct size so I ordered them from Zappos. I couldn't be happier with the shoes or the service I received. I am a nature photographer and wanted a shoe that was light and supportive to carry my equipment all day on rough trails. The shoes are very comfortable and are cut right for my narrow feet.

Comfy & Stylish - I bought this shoe in white. I love the look even more in person and get a ton of compliments on them. I find them very comfortable, but the front of my foot is a little wide. The red interior does rub off a little on your foot in the beginning.

These shoes are terrific. My son won't wear anything else...I have a pair too and they're great. They pamper your feet: cool, light, rugged and tough looking. Get them wet, play soccer in them, baseball, etc.; it doesn't matter. They can take it. If you like a shoe that appeals to your inner animal (and you don't need a lot of foot support), these are for you. A note about Zappos: terrific. The first pair had a problem with the lacing, and Zappos replaced them immediately with free shipping both ways. I can't believe how good these people are to their customers.

I walk miles on concrete every day and thought the ventilation would be helpful, I was right. These shoes are very comfortable; the fit is good (I usually wear Pumas and DMs). They look great too. The one downside to these shoes, and it was mentioned by other reviewers, is -- the side strap that holds the heel comes loose, requiring occasional adjustment. Maybe I'll pin or sew them, that certainly isn't a deal-breaker and I’ll buy these again if/when this pair wears out.

Excellent shoe! On my second pair. Worn a lot of different brands and this is by far the best. With new hiking shoes the first couple of hikes always seem to be a little uncomfortable - breaking the shoe in. Not with this one! Very comfortable, firm, support! I highly recommend this shoe for technical hikes and running the rocky trails! You can't go wrong!

I'm updating a review that I did a year ago. I have now had my Salomon Comps for TWO years. They have held up magnificently and are still comfortable. Unlike some other reviewers, I have had no issues with the lacing system breaking - I'm still on the originals. What I love about this shoe: they are the PERFECT trail running shoe. First, check out the grips on the bottom of the shoe. The jagged edges ensure that you don't slip, even on gravel. Plus, they are slanted one way at the toe to prevent you from slipping and to get a better grip on the uphill, and slanted the other way for the downhill. Second, I believe that the lighter shoe HELPS in trail running. Some reviewers complain that there is not enough support and that these shoes are flimsy. Well, I think that they fit like a glove (or a sock), which really helps for true trail runners. I wore this shoe in a race last year, and kicked some butt on the rocky downhill parts. I attribute this to the fact that I can feel changes in terrain slightly sooner than if I had a bulkier shoe on. This allows me to adjust my running position and avoid twisting my ankle (okay, hopefully I just didn't jinx myself). Third, the lacing system allows for an extremely comfortable and easily customized fit. I LOVE this lacing system and will never buy another pair of running shoes without it. There are no pressure points on my feet, and I am amazingly able to achieve a perfect lace-up every run. The lacing system has never loosened while I'm running - the tightness stays at the desired level. These shoes run big. I'm normally a 9.5 (sometimes 10) but fit a 9 in these shoes. I think that some reviewers aren't using these shoes for the purpose that they were built: trail running on varied terrain. Keep this in mind when purchasing. I actually find them quite comfortable for every day wear too, although after two years I'm about due for a new pair. My mom thinks they look funny, but I think they're pretty sporty... I have the red and want the blue next time.

I bought these shoes for a 50-mile ultra. Thus far they have been a severe disappointment. The right shoe has a really stiff piece of plastic that sits right under the forefoot and is capable of producing some quite spectacular blisters after only 5 miles. I've tried every trick out there, extra socks, athletic tape...even duck tape - no dice. Sadly, these aren't going to be used for the ultra if I plan on finishing. I can only assume it's a manufacturing defect because the left shoe doesn't have this problem and I've never had a shoe do this before. Having said that, let's focus only on the left shoe. I run around 50 - 60 miles per week and weigh 135 lbs. I have a narrow heel and kind of a narrow forefoot, which the shoes fit really well. However, the sole is really stiff and seems like it soaks up a lot of force just trying to flex it with each step. Based on that, I'd say it's made for a runner that's a lot heavier than I am. They definitely keep out water and debris and have solid traction in the wet stuff and it's pretty light too. I'm not nuts about the lacing system either. It's easy off, but certainly not easy putting on if you like your laces very tight because it takes a lot of concentration to tuck the laces into the tongue while tightening. Put all that together and I'm stuck with a really cool-looking shoe that I can only use to walk around in the mud and water, but will require little effort to take off when I get home. Sorry, Salomon, you blew it.

A very good multi-purpose, waterproof shoe. I have been wearing it (in the same week) from the highs of the Inca trail in Peru, to the heart of the Amazonian rainforest... no problem, comfortable, adhere well to the trails (dry, rock and wet) - the lace system is a major plus!

I bought these for a recent trip to Costa Rica and they were perfect. I ordered a 1/2 size smaller than my usual size and the fit was perfect. I wore them hiking through jungles, up to waterfalls, etc. I washed the mud off with a hose in the evening, set them on the porch and the next day they were dry and ready to go again. They are very light, well ventilated, cool, and comfortable. I would absolutely recommend them.

Overpronator's dream! As an overpronator I spent several frustrating years with other well known brands before I bought a pair of Speedcross 2 a year ago and couldn't believe the difference. From the moment I tried them on the comfort was in a different league to other trail runners I had used, and the first time I ran in them it was clear that the increased comfort and support also translated into improved performance - the PB times on my regular runs all improved significantly, presumably because my footfall and running style was altered in a positive way. The support for pronators is excellent and the tight fit adds to the overall level of support. The sole is ideally suited to rough trails and off-trail running, and the grip is excellent both on wet rock and boggy peat. Uphill and downhill performance is superb. I have also used them for road running even though the sole is slightly unconventional for this purpose! In extremely hot weather I have found the need to change socks on very long runs (20k+) due to perspiration but this is the only criticism I could make and only applies in exceptionally hot weather conditions. I have just bought a second pair - not because the first pair is worn out but because I wanted to stock up before Salomon 'improves' them.
