While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.
Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.
In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.
Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.
"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."
"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

We have had this cooler vest for the past two years and it has made summers in Washington, DC bearable. It gets pretty hot down here and way humid. Without the vest, our dog usually cannot even make it around the block with out stopping to cool off. A few times we've had to carry all 65lbs of him home. Now we can go for normal length walks and he can even play at the dog park without overheating. Before a walk, I hold it under the faucet, get it thoroughly wet and then put it on him. I also carry a Nalgene and pour water on the vest to keep it wet - which is where it gets its cooling capability. At the end of a long walk, I will often put my hand under the vest and his back is always surprisingly cool. The water keeps him cool by evaporating from the vest much the same way sweat evaporates from a person's skin. It's really pretty neat. This past summer a bunch of people at our dog park purchased a vest after they saw how lively our dog was compared to all the other dogs just lounging around. No one wants to take their dog to the park only to have him return to the house with tons of energy because he was too hot to play. Anyway, the only problem really is the strange looks you get for putting a coat on your dog in 98 degree weather. Sometimes I feel a little self-conscious about it, but nobody's called animal control on us yet!

This jacket is wonderful for my squirrel obsessed Cavalier. You would never know she has serious heart disease the way she runs wildly after her prey. This jacket helps to give her some time outside for the chase in the excessive heat we have in Texas before I have to bring her inside to cool down & calm down. If I keep her inside all the time she runs around the house crying to go outside, she's so OCD about squirrels, so I had to try something that would allow her some time to run but also keep her from getting too hot. I dip her in her kiddie pool but she dries out in minutes she runs so fast but this jacket holds water well enough I don't have to dunk her in her pool every 5 minutes. It's easy to re-wet the jacket when I put her in her pool to get her feet wet. Pairing this Swamp Cooler with her Kool Collar that holds ice cubes has given my little girl lots of time this summer outside when she otherwise would have had to be kept inside. My 16.5 lb Cavalier fits well in the XS. Her harness fits over it easily, I simply enlarged it some to fit over the jacket. The head opening is a little snug but my girl lets me put this on without too much objection (she wants to get to the squirrels & has no patience). The reflective nature of this jacket also helps when I take her on walks, it's the difference between a three minute walk and a 10-15 minute walk. That may not sound like much to someone who has a healthy dog but for my little girl it helps to give her the time outside she craves. I don't know how many months or years my little girl has or how long she'll be able to run wildly after squirrels but with her wearing the Swamp Cooler I get her "Mommy, that was so much fun" fabulous huge smiles many times a day, even in the hot summer. Her smiles are priceless & this jacket helps to make them possible! Thank you Ruffwear!

Item was received timely and size was appropriate per sizing chart. Less hassle to order through Zappos than other online stores.

Our black coated Portuguese water dog loves to go sailing in this swamp cooler. Once in a while we mist it with ice water and you can tell how comfortable the dog is - she gets excited and doesn't mind wearing it at all...
I'd also recommend: Puppia, Surf'sUpDog, PetSafe, Earthdog
