While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.
Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.
In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.
Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.
"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."
"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

Love these! We have four dogs and they all wear these jackets. Our youngest is a bit of a wild thing and he managed to go into some thick brush on a steep hillside and pulled his jacket off where we couldn't retrieve it. So we bought this one to replace it. It's even better than the old ones we have. Fits terrific, and the new straps are protected by a flap, so they're less likely to get hung up in brush. Best dog coat ever! Ruffwear is the only brand of backpack or jacket I'll buy. They're the best of the best.
I'd also recommend: No other brands, but anything Ruffwear is the best.

This jacket is perfect for wet, chilly weather. It is rain-repellant and comfortably warm, and looks quite fetching (pun intended) on my Jack Russell mix, who, at 33 pounds, wears a small. It's easy to get on and off and doesn't seem to attract or collect dirt or hair. A useful, good-looking, and apparently well-made product.

We bought this overcoat for our dalmatian for our daily walks in the rain. He loves it, and now gets excited to put it on because he knows we are going for a walk. I like the way it is designed to cover his chest and back with a snug fit. There are two adjustable straps with elastic that help with the fit. The buckles are neatly enclosed in two side panels that prevent the buckles from rubbing his fur. The neckline is low enough not to interfere with his choke chain and collar. The material is very high tech and repels the rain. Follow the sizing instructions. I measured Spot's chest. He was 1/2 inch from the maximum of the large. I ordered the XL thinking it would fit better. It was way too big. So I re-ordered the size they recommended based on his chest measurement and it fits perfectly. I am very pleased with the quality and design of this product. It also appears to be very durable. I would highly recommend.

I love this coat! I don't think my dog is the kind that loves to wear clothing but he tolerates it okay and I feel so much better taking him out in the cold when he has this on. It's a very nice green color, nice reflective quality for walks on those short winter days. The one downside might be that the hook for the light on the back is a tad big and I have not found a light that fits. This isn't a deal breaker as I simply hooked the light onto the D-ring on his harness and we are all set! Ruffwear makes excellent dog gear and Zappos has excellent customer service. What more would you ask for?

I love this coat. My hound mix is going through his first winter and needed something extra for his short coat. This fits well, snaps and holds and covers his belly enough to offer protection and allow him to pee without hitting it. Highly recommended
