While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn't set it down without losing the water and she didn't want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. "You need to do something about this," Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.
Patrick Kruse was the right person to ask. As a kid he constructed packs for his dog out of army surplus gas mask bags, using them on backpack trips in Northern California's Trinity Alps. As a young adult, he sailed for several years as crew on charter boats in the Caribbean and Central America where being resourceful was a necessity. Patrick's interest in kayaking lead him to start Salamander Paddle Gear acquainting him with numerous technical fabrics. With this unique mix of knowledge and experience Patrick developed The Quencher™, the original collapsible food and water bowl for dogs—and the solution to Liz and Moqui's drinking problem.
In 1994, after 16 months of research and development and product testing, Ruff Wear made its enthusiastically welcomed debut at an Outdoor Retailer trade show with The Quencher™. Since, it has won praise from thirsty dogs and been in a range of publications. "They were impressed with the simplicity, quality and function of The Quencher™ and wanted to see what other solutions we could come up with," Patrick says.
Ruff Wear now offers a full line of innovative performance dog gear. In addition to collapsible bowls, the company produces a full line of dog-related equipment designed to enhance the interaction between humans and dogs. A brief listing of gear includes dog packs, dog boots, dog harnesses, dog coats, and dog life jackets.
"We want to enhance the experience of all dogs and their two legged companions," Patrick says. Besides those who are active with their pets, trainers, working dogs, Search and Rescue teams, Canine Companions and Guide Dog Users all have become Ruff Wear supporters and each present specific challenges in product development. "My needs pale in comparison to those who depend on their dogs for assistance," he says. "The specific tasks and companionship dogs provide is really incredible. It puts a smile on my face when people appreciate the simple design approach that we build into our gear to address complex tasks."
"We’ve always been oriented toward products that will enhance and assist the interaction between dogs and humans. And that has always been and will continue to be our motivation."

I have a large 10 year old black lab who would rather kiss a cat than wear clothing. We walk 3-5 miles every morning and here in Minnesota it can be -10°. Being a lab, he has no off switch and demands to go despite the weather. I have always feared someone would turn me in for animal cruelty, so I purchased one of these. It is snug enough to not get peed on, but stretchy enough to not cause discomfort. After a minute or two, it is like he forgot he has it on. The reflective strips really show up and that is important to me because I typically go out at 4:00 AM. The zipper and seams appear to be sturdy enough, for the price it should hold up. Over all I am very pleased.

Works great - it's a little snug but that's how it keeps him warm on the coldest Chicago days. Not too long as to cover the business end but it covers up his belly from the splashes as we travel through the neighborhood.
I'd also recommend: I have not found anything that compares to Ruffwear

This is a great product! Zappos provided super fast and free two way shipping and the best warranty on the web. Our Shell jacket was small. We advised Zappos and they sent another one before we even shipped the first one out. The correspondence was immediate. We will use Zappos where we can before going to another vendor.

The XS fits my skinny Boston Terrier great (18 lbs), but still having trouble finding something that fits my girthy French Bulldog in all the right spots. The S fits my Frenchie well around the chest and under the arms, but is too long. Used fabric glue to tuck under the tail end, but that did not help the length under her belly. You can only tuck so much because of the zipper. I tried the XS on my Frenchie, and the length is perfect. The material is stretchy enough that I could actually get it zipped closed (uprising since there is such a diff in girth between her and my Boston), but it was way too tight (think overstuffed sausage). I have known very few dogs who do not mind wearing a sweater or jacket, and my dogs are no exception. They hate it, so I only clad them when the temperature is in the 20's. Even though the XS fits my Boston well, she still rolls around in the grass in protest. That says more about her than the jacket, however. The jacket is high quality material, sturdy workmanship, and looks great. The exterior is waterproof, and the interior is soft polar fleece, just as described. The size chart is right on too. According to the chart, the XS would fit my Boston perfectly, but that size is too small for her with other jackets, so I was dubious and ordered the S as well - as already stated, the XS does fit her perfectly, just as the chart indicated. If you have a normal shaped dog who does not mind being clothed, I would definitely recommend this jacket. As for my beloved Frenchie, the search continues...
