The Reef Convertible has come a LONG way... I remember owning a pair of these 16 or 17 years ago (of course, they were a much less evolved version). Reef has updated the classic sandal that made their brand popular 17 years ago, by adding a soft cushion bottom that features a contoured arch and hugs the heel which makes for better support. Also, BOTH of the cross straps are now adjustable, not the toe strap. And, the heel strap has a nice foam piece that prevents friction from it against your Achilles tendon. How nice. These sandals weren't for me, but rather my roommate. I still have my old Reefs (no, not the originals from close to two decades ago; I've had a couple pairs since then) which aren't nearly as cushiony, comfortable and adjustable as these. These are great! A true classic great for water activities that require footwear that won't fall off.
Brands I'd also recommend: VANS, Doc Marten sandals, Cobian

Reef Convertible, My third pair - I love them all over again. I wear them almost constantly during the summer months. This is my third pair and each previous pair lasted about 10 years so I've been wearing them for a long time. The new ones just keep getting better. My clasps were a bit problematic at first, they let go for no reason the first few times I wore them, but they are working fine now and they are VERY comfortable. I sure hope Reef is still making the convertible in 2016 when I will undoubtedly need a new pair or should I buy another now and save them in the safe deposit box??? Kudos to Reef!
Brands I'd also recommend: Stick with the Reef Convertible, it's the real deal.

Sandals buying - I loved shopping at Zappos.com. The process was so easy and I received my purchase so quickly. I would totally recommend using their web site; it will be my first choice when I am looking for shoes.

Oldies but goodies - These are the old-school sandals that I love- and thankfully Zappos still carries. They are my favorites because I can walk in them for longer distances than regular flip-flops, but they're also easy to get on and off.

About Reef
The now internationally recognized company has always blended the cool and casual attitude of the beach with a commitment to nurturing the lifestyle that follows. At the core of the Reef are authentic, surf inspired products that have been worn by millions around the world since the company originated in 1984. Professional surf riders like Rob Machado, Mick Fanning, Ben Bourgeois, and Jay Thompson continue to spread the word about Reef by traveling the world in search of the best waves in some of the most beautiful and remote spots on earth, living out a fantasy that few ever experience firsthand. Reef is all about finding those spots and savoring every moment of beautiful surf and sand.
Reef sandals have stood the test of time since two brothers from Argentina founded the company. Backed by classics, sandals like the Reef Fanning and the Reef Leather Smoothy, the revered surf company continues to deliver the sandals that help drive the sport and lifestyle forward. Reef doesn’t slouch on women’s styles, either. Reef flip-flops are easy to step into like the Ginger 2-Pair Variety Pack, and if you need an extra lift with each step, then the Butter has all that and more. And if you need some traditional Reef sandal style, then the easy comfort of the Wispy or Slap will keep you covered on the beach, boardwalk, or for those everyday adventures under the sun. Not limited to just sandals, Reef has expanded to an entire lifestyle incorporating Reef clothes, including shirts, hoodies, shorts, dresses, and a variety of Reef swimsuits and Reef boardshorts.
Times have changed, but Reef is driven by the same constant – they’re surfers at heart, drawing influences from a world filled with beaches, waves, and surf. They still stand for the same things that the company was founded on by Fernando and Santi back in 1984 – a love of the sport and the lifestyle that was born out of it. To this day, Reef remains a core surf company with their revered collection of Reef sandals. With authentic and innovative products intended to nurture an incredibly fortunate lifestyle that involves surf, sensuality and a life filled with happiness, Reef and their beloved collection of Reef sandals will continue to thrive, no matter how high that next wave may be.

My favorite current sandals, sadly discontinued - Years ago, it used to be a lot easier to find sandals with a design like this - all black, straight-across (not diagonal) straps, a strap that wraps around the heel for a very solid fit, and a quick-on/quick-off design using either a snap-in clasp (as with the Convertible) or a velcro strap that wraps around the ankle without going through a buckle that requires pulling the lower part to create enough slack to get your foot in and out. First, I lost my snap-based sandals (bought around a decade ago) to mold and then the wrap-around-strap ones I bought in Hawaii to replace them (Kam Kasuals brand) finally fell apart. I was ecstatic to find the Reef Convertible, but unfortunately waited a little too long to buy it once it'd been discontinued. Luckily it apparently wasn't discontinued as recently in the U.K. and I was able to find a few sellers that still had it in my size in all black. It was a little expensive to import from the U.K., but it was worth it. These sandals are great. The snap clasp is not as large or easy to operate as those old sandals and it doesn't close with as satisfying a snap, so it seems like it might come open during frenzied foot activity, but it makes these a great choice for quick-on/quick-off (yet won't-fall-off) shoes to keep by the door for little sojourns outside. It's great how you can customize the fit on these as well. My only issue with them is that the arch support is a little high for my flat feet. Hopefully it'll compress down somewhat over time. Anyhow, if you wear one of the few sizes of these that Zappos still has available, I can highly recommend them. Please note that I wear a US 10.5, so interpret my "felt a half size smaller than marked" for the 11s (well, actually labeled as a UK 10) accordingly.

These are lazily designed sandals that just happen to work. Flat but oh-so-soft bottom with a few straps to keep it on your feet. It's got some quirks: my heel kind of steps on the beginning of the strap, and it feels just a tad too thick, like I'm wearing platform sandals, but nothing that really detracts from the comfort. They're cheap too!

I recently replaced my pair of 15 year old Reef Convertibles with a new pair. While I generally like the features and comfort of this model sandal, one glaring and unwelcome change stands out. Some brilliant designer made the very stupid decision to move the the ankle strap release to the outside of the sandal, instead of the inside. When you are putting on this sandal, it is much more difficult to insert the strap into the clasp on the outside of the sandal, compared to the inside - which is the way the older version was designed. This is easy to see why - if you need to reach down to secure something on your foot, its much easier to bring the inside of your foot (the side facing the other foot) towards you, then trying to reach for the outside. What Einstein at Reef decided to move the location of the strap clasp to the outside?

I'm severely bummed by this product. I used to have a pair of Reef's like them several years back, but I cannot find quite the same model so I bought these. They are very similar, except for one fatal flaw in the design: the heel strap fastens on the outside of the foot instead of the inside. With my old Reef's, which were functionally identical except for this difference, I would leave the rear strap undone most of the time. This made it easy to slip the sandals on and off like a flip-flop. Plus the clicking of the strap fasteners would let everyone know what a cool slacker I am, and it would keep people from being surprised at my sudden presence due to my ninja skills. When the going got serious, I could flip my leg up into my lap, fasten the heel strap, and make a quick getaway. Now, with the strap fastening on the outside, all this is ruined. Leaving the strap off means stepping on the straps, making it impossible to use the sandals with flip-flop convenience. Worse, you have to contort yourself to get at the fastener which you can't even see, making an inconvenient product even more so. I'm guessing the product testing was done on flexible Capoeira masters, who likely fastened the strap with a dancing leg sweep, or perhaps with a strong look. I, however, currently lack that skill. Worst of all, I am again accidentally sneaking up on old ladies with my ninja-like silence. I'm referring all wrongful death torts to Reef, Inc. Bottom line: a careless decision has made an awesome product sucky and is now giving old ladies heart attacks (in the bad way). Otherwise this product gets five stars.

Straightforward, comfy, sandal at a decent price. Great for the spring & summer heat as well as for the river. Not a sandal for hiking long distances or rocky terrain.
