Short review:\r\n-Not really D width more like C but will stretch to fit D and in my case EE. Why was this popular boot not offered in Wide?\r\n-Order only half a size down if you have wide feet\r\n-Boots insole is not ideal after stretching to an EE foot gaps appear between the boot sides and the insole that cause discomfort. Correctable with some thin leather insoles or custom leather ones.\r\n-Not usable with a Superfeet insole, its already a very low volume boot.\r\n-Great laces.\r\n-Good polishable leather, be careful with the white stitches.\r\n-Moderately arched built in leather insole.\r\n-The shank although steel is only a very narry flimsy half shank. There is a lot of sole flex.\r\n-Heavy duty as casual shoes go, but not tough enough for extreme conditions.\r\n-Rubber commando sole and neoprene heel are long lasting, but marking.\r\n\r\nLong review:\r\nI am measured 11.5 EE on a Brannock Device, in the morning. However after a long days walk, work, being on a plane etc. My feet swell larger to maybe 12 and maybe even a little bit wider. I ordered 10.5, a full size down. This turns out to be a mistake for me as I hadn\'t realized that these shoes lose some length as the leather flexes and the sole curves a tiny bit in addition to the whole magical foot growth. These boots a year later are now a little too short. ORDER HALF A SIZE DOWN is my recommendation for wide footers. Another thing to note of these boots is that their shank is only a flimsy tiny half shank. I can take the boot in my hands and flex the sole easily. They do not provide a lot of stiff support you will need if you expect to walk over rough terrain. After doing an over night on the Appalachian Trail in these my arches and toes cried out because they were not supported by the flimsy shank. I can\'t speak for construction work, but if they cannot stand up to packing alot of weight in mild back country conditions I doubt they would do well in the construction yard.\r\n\r\n

I bought my Red Wing GTs in June. I had read every post to determine if these were the right shoes and to get advice on the size. I love the style and wanted something rugged yet nice. All of the posts are accurate in terms of the size being larger than industry norm. I measured my foot and it came out to be 11, so I ordered a 10 1/2 . It was still too large. I went ahead and ordered a 9 1/2 and it fit snug. My toes and heel are perfect, there's enough room there for them. The middle was way snug and someone posted to get them snug and they will adjust to your feet. I was leery to get them, but they are the right choice. I too recommend to get them snug and they will loosen up. Mine took about 2 weeks wearing them almost every single day for them to get comfortable. I was thinking that I made a mistake, but nope, these are the right size and getting them snug is the way to go. There was some excess leather right at the inside of my ankle and it killed, so I cut out a small piece of the tongue and the pain stopped. That's all there was to it. It was right where the tongue met the eyelet hole area up near the top right at the inside of my ankle. These boots are the best. I ordered black because I figured they would be more appropriate for wearing for business on casual days. I usually wear a 10 1/2 and so ordering this much smaller made me a little nervous in that I was worried that if I kept them and they didn't loosen up, then I would be stuck with some great boots that were the wrong size. So for me, I made sure that my toes and heel were not bound and that only the middle was snug as someone mentioned. And as always, Zappos is absolutely the best in terms of customer service. I ordered them on a Friday night and they arrived on Monday! The returns arrived in 2 days, the day after I sent back the first order. And of course I was concerned about the cost, but for me, I won't need to get another shoe like this for a while and since they're leather, I can clean the dirt/dust off easily. In all, these boots are truly worth it for the cost. Just make sure that your toes and heel are fine and then the middle will loosen up and they'll feel great. Thanks.

Really nice boot. However, I did return them. One of the boots had a really annoying loud "pop" when walking originating somewhere in the forefoot. Not only could you feel it, but it was quite loud; didn't want to risk this being something that would not go away after a while after spending so much money on this boot. Only wore in the house on carpet; however, did seem like they were going to put me through some serious torture getting worn in, but everyone says they are great once they reach that worn in state. As for the fit, they really seemed to run relatively true to size for me; however, 1/2 size down would perhaps have fit better. Going to keep my eye on them to see if the price drops, at which time I just may give them another try. Zappos rules, brotha.

Handsome boot, a bit "redder" in real life than the image might make you think. Inside lighting makes the black cherry look quite like the picture, step outside and look down and you might be surprised! I\'ve gotten more than a few comments from coworkers, friends and passersby alike.\r\n\r\nI put myself through college working in Red Wing boots, and continue to think they are some of the finest footwear regarding materials and craftsmanship. \r\n\r\nOther reviews are very correct - 1 size UNDER your normal size. Also, consider adding a shoe insert if you need extra cushion or arch support.\r\n\r\nAnd of course, Zappos delivery & service was...wonderful. ;-)

They do take a long time to break in. They are comfortable. They are not that hard to size, if you wear a 10.5 Red wing then order a 10.5. They do not have an insole, so when you first try them on they feel big, more like roomy. But after you add the insole they feel perfect. The break in period is more for the saddle, and lace area then the step creases. More stylish than the 952\'s but not as comfortable...has to due with how the tongue is cut..there is more material that needs "broken in" around the ankles. All-in-all a great working boot for around the shop floor with a nice pair of slacks and on the weekend with jeans. Well worth the money and effort!!!!!!!!!!

Just what I wanted. I have been needing to temporarily replace my White's semi-dress boot to get a rebuild and bought a pair of these. I'm two days in and they are just starting to break in, which is a good thing. I intend on needing a resole and new heel within a year or so, but that investment will be well worth it on these boots.

Best Boot Ever! Many have stated that these boots took a long time to break in, and I found this not to be true. They were well broken in after a week, but perhaps I am hard on my boots. The size felt about right as well. ZAPPOS is the BEST place to order shoes. I placed my order around noon on a Monday and got them around the same time on a Tuesday. UNBELIEVABLE! Great boot, great shoe store.

What a pair of shoes! Beautiful leather and craftsmanship-I especially like the part leather outsole. They are a bit stiff to start with and require a fairly lengthy break-in time but I still gave them 5 stars for comfort because I love the feel of a shoe constructed as these are. I would recommend ordering a half size down and getting some pecard's leather dressing to keep them like new. Pricey, but worth every cent!

Good enough for your old man - good enough for you - What you have here are a pair of WWII combat boots made out of lots nicer leather than the GI originals. These are first rate, American made, working boots that should last you for four or five years no matter how rough you are on them. You will need to break these puppies in, so don't figure on taking them out of the box and going for a five mile hike. It will take you a few weeks to break these boots in right, so get a couple of pairs of heavy wool socks, and don't be in a hurry. After about two or three weeks you will find that the leather has conformed to your foot exactly and the sole padding has shaped itself to the bottoms of you feel. If you are looking for a rugged, good looking, pair of go anywhere boots, that will last for years, and these are them. If you have wide feet, get them a half size larger than your normal shoe size.

Beckman/Gentleman Travelers - I usually wear a 12, so I sized down 1/2 a size... and it was still too large! After an amazingly swift return (Zappos actually sent me a size 11 the same day I received the 11 1/2 - how's THAT for service!) I ended up with a size 11. It is true; the break in period is long and a little uncomfortable but absolutely worth it. The leather is among the thickest and highest grade that I have seen. I own three pairs of Frye boots, no slouches in quality, and I think these Red Wings are going to outlast them by a long mile. One previous reviewer stated that his friend has had his pair for over twenty years. I believe it. Don't let the price put you off - in a twenty year span, how many pairs of shoes do you think you're going to buy and go through? Oh, and did I mention that these are totally resoleable? In the long run, I believe that these will end up being more of an investment than a mere purchase. Did I mention that they look damn good? The only thing that I had a problem with was deciding between the black and the cherry - you can't go wrong either way. Good luck!

I was wrong! I posted a review of this boot, the Gentleman Traveler, a while ago, in which I described it as very uncomfortable and hard to put on. I am here today to rescind that review. This boot is seriously built to last, and it's break-in period WAS very uncomfortable. It IS a bit difficult for me to put on without pulling out half the laces. (Yes, I'm lazy.) However, after wearing this boot four or five excruciating times, something changed. It adapted to my foot beautifully. I have wider feet, and the leather stretched appropriately. In these boots, I've walked miles at a time. I've not had to add any comfort or arch insoles, either. My feet feel like they're in armor. The style is classic and timeless and will always look cool. I've had them for about a month and I expect they'll last me at least a decade. One of my friends just became a letter carrier. He has owned a similar pair of Red Wings for 22 years (!), and now takes them out on rough weather days to deliver mail. Red Wing did something wrong making this boot. If they want repeat customers, they've got to make a flimsier product! Have they not heard of planned obsolescence?

Fantastic, too heavy, difficult to size... I love this boot. It is obviously built to last and it looks great. That said, it's just not the best match for my foot. My normal size is 10, but the Gentleman Traveler 10 was quite large - lots of heel slipping with every step and an almost clown-shoe like appearance with my chicken legs. So I exchanged it for a 9. (There was no 9.5, unfortunately.) The 9 was near impossible to even slip onto my foot, and while there's just enough room for my toes, it really binds the rest of my foot. The leather is very strong and I'm unsure about just how effective a stretching attempt would be. I can get the boot on without too much grunting and grimacing if I use a shoe horn, but is it really worth it? Again, fantastic boot, but be prepared to have some sizing issues and a possibly painful break-in period.

Red Wing Shoes Gentleman Traveler - Quality shoe with a nice retro look; fairly comfortable right out of the box. I have longer toes and need a roomy toe box, so a half size down from my normal size would not have worked for me. I ordered my regular shoe size and am glad I did.

Very impressive - My first impressions are that this is a very well crafted leather product, and it is truly, as others have accurately pointed out, sized large. I did the right thing by ordering a half size smaller. My wearing of this boot will most definitely be for casual dress, it is much too much nice for use as a work boot. I also would recommend an aftermarket insole. I have initially slipped a Superfeet Green insole in for now and am breaking it in around the house.

Already happy - Just got a pair of black GTs over the weekend. Glad to read the comments here. I ended up with a half-size down from normal and the break in is indeed a bit painful due to the thick sturdy leather. I was a little nervous for the last few days that I had made an error with the size, but reading the comments here has totally eased my mind. They run a half-size large for most people and expect a painful break-in. I'm beginning to feel the softening up though and I already love these boots. Perfect for a job where you need sturdy shoes that won’t wear out in one year, but you also need to look like you have a little taste. Very happy!

Boot will last a lifetime, but... The red wing gentleman traveler is an outstanding boot. Even at its current price, the boot is a great value. Pros: leather quality is outstanding. Construction is superior - just what you'd expect from Red Wing. And the style and last are timeless. Owning this boot means you have classic taste - square toed loafer wearers need not apply. Cons: the boot is incredibly stiff and will require a considerable break-in period. Also, the fit is fair - about 1/2 size large. The heel is bit wide as I noticed considerable slippage without adding a heel pad. Nonetheless, this is definitely a must have, just be prepared to invest time to get the fit right.

Nice boots for working gentleman - These boots fit well and were pretty comfortable out of the box. They run a little narrow. They are attractive boots made the old fashioned way, with sewn on full leather built-up soles. They'd be nicer with a liner. Great for a well-dressed man who needs a boot to wear to worksites or in other hazardous conditions.

Finally a replacement for my beloved 957's. Simple & tough! I have been wearing Red Wing 957 boots for over 35 years. The model was discontinued for some reason. I suspect that it just didn't have enough bells & whistles for the target market. Actually, the 957 had absolutely NO bells or whistles. That's one of the main reasons I love them. They are just plain work boots, incredibly tough and a pair usually lasted me around 8-10 years and fit like a glove. I received a pair of Red Wing Gentleman Travelers in Black Cherry. I put them on for the first time this morning at 6 am and it's now noon and they already feel great. They are very close to the 957's in appearance, except that they are 6 in. rather 8 in. boots. I love them and I'm going to buy another couple of pairs just like them before Red Wing realizes that they have produced another model of perfect boots and discontinues them.
