This is first pair of Altra's for me and I want to buy another pair. I love big toe box and zero drop (more natural like feel). I can't compare 2s to previous models, so for me Instint 2 is a perfect running shoe.

Great shoe. Light, flat sole and roomy toe box. It really fits the natural shape and the human feet. Money well spent. The shape is really a break through. No one has pointy toes, so why are other shoe manufacturer create a pointy toe box? train your feet muscles and arch and you will be less in need for arch support. This shoe is natural - no pronounced arch support. order half size larger. I usually wear 11 and 11.5 would have fit me better. That's my lesson for the next pair. I hope those will still be manufactured when I'll buy the next pair because I will definitely go for those!

The most comfortable shoes I have ever worn, but buy at least a half size larger than usual. I hope they last a long time.

I usually wear 7, get a 7.5 in these and they were almost too short. Roomy at the toe. I don't run but these are very comfortable for standing long hours at work. I have Morton's neuroma and can get through a 12-hour shift with no pain with these. Uglier than they look in the picture. Like ugly little pillows for your feet.

Great shoe. Space in toe box, plenty of cushion and support. Run in them every night!

The Instinct 2 is a significant upgrade to Altra's Instinct 1.5. The 1.5 had an issue with the outer mesh tearing after just a few months of heavy wear. However, they seemed to have fixed that issue with this version. The 2 is also a more substantial shoe. The midsole seems thicker and wider, and it's a bit more cushioned. If you've never worn a pair of Altra's, you should know that they are designed for natural running. Meaning, when you jog/run you land on the forefoot or midfoot and life with your legs, versus landing on your heel and pushing off your foot. To accommodate that running style, there is little to no arch support and the toe box is very wide. For example, I have very wide feet (4E) and my forefoot fits very comfortably in these shoes. I use these shoes as my everyday shoes. I use them to walk and during workouts. However, I use Vibram Fivefinger shoes for when I run. Since I mainly run on asphalt and concrete, these are the perfect shoes to transition into. They are cushy and support my feet quite well. I have also, on occasion, run in these shoes, and they handle quite well.

I just bought my first pair of Altra's...the Instinct 2's. In the store I noticed the shoe strings were too small but when I read the Altra "Fit...Guide" that was in the box, they show how to properly lace their shoes. It's not at all as shown on Zappos or Amazon pictures. When I laced them according to their specs, the laces were just fine -- plenty long! Just FYI. These are as comfy as some Mephistos I used to own. My feet are in heaven.

The good: Perfect toe box last for my foot. Plenty or room for toe spacers. The bad: Inside the shoe on the bottom, it's sewn too narrow so the outside of your foot rides up on this area causing your ankle to pronate in. The solution is to get a new foot bed (what I did) or build up the foot bed high enough so your foot will sit flat. Shoelaces are way too short and don't hold the tie. Runs too small. I have a 11.5 foot but had to get a size 47 to fit correctly. Sole is a little too squishy for my taste. Even squishes out the sides.

This shoe did not have the volume to accommodate a custom orthotic like the Instinct 1.5. It still has the wide toe box which is awesome, but those with a high instep should beware. Even with the new minimally padded tongue the fit was cramped. As others have mentioned, the laces are also short, flimsy, and would need immediate replacement. The length and width appear a little more generous than the 1.5.

Shoes started to come apart after two months of constant wearing - both shoes in the little toe area on the top. There are two layers of material in this area, the top layer is very thin. Bottom of the footbed is sewed to the shoe too far in on the outside so your foot rides up on it causing your ankle to pronate in. The shoe laces are too short to lace into the last hole. The sole is too cushy and moves around too much squishing out the sides when walking on an angle. The toe area wrinkles which looks funky. On the plus side, lots of toe box room which is a plus and fits my foot very well. Too bad the rest of the design wasn't thought out or fully tested.

These are the worst shoes that I have ever owned. The mesh on my Instinct started tearing off the midsole and in other areas after less than 50 miles of use on a treadmill. Please do not waste you money, these are cheap Wal-Mart shoes at best.

Brands I'd also recommend: Brooks Pure Project, Saucony
