There are some pressure points coming from the tongue when lacing up the shoes. That is the reason for the 4-star Comfort rating. Hopefully, they will fade over time as the shoes are broken in. Otherwise, I'm pleased with this purchase.

I loved the Hedgehogs. But they discontinued the model. This is their replacement. Very comfortable and enjoy them. Highly recommend. Fit true to size!

These are the best hiking shoes made! Great arch support and water-wicking. This was my second pair and they lived up to their name. My old pair is still around and used for lawn mowing, roofing, etc.

Zappos' mens shoe size chart says US 11.5 is 28.3cm. This size 11.5 shoe says it is 29.5cm - that is a big difference! So it runs big.

Great foot support for any type activity, especially for big guys. Very comfortable shoe, great look - no neon colors or cheap plastic shine. I bought a back up pair in case they were no longer available when I wear these out.

This is the best all year all weather shoe. Lacing allows for thin or thick socks based on temperature and time of year - works with gaiters. If you prefer stiff arch support in a boot, use an insert.

These are great hiking/athletic shoes. They have very good support, yet they required no breaking in whatsoever. I was dismayed when I could no longer find the Hedgehogs, but these are every bit as comfortable.

Bought this shoe a year ago and absolutely love it! Started doing Appalachian Trail hikes a couple of years ago and had a hard time finding the right shoe. Even tried hiking in running shoes. I was wearing Merrell Moabs but felt my feet were taking a beating. Someone at REI suggested this shoe and its been perfect! I've done about 100 miles on the App Trail plus wear them on a regular basis. The snake plate on these shoes is fantastic, walking on rocks is completely unfelt. They have a great non-slip bottom and great traction for those muddy areas. These were great on the trail because they also kept my feet dry. I will be purchasing again.

Had these previously but wore them out at work. I work outdoors and I'm on my feet 80% of the day. Needed comfy and lightweight sneakers. These give me both. I bought 2 pairs just in case they discontinue them. These 2 pairs will make 8th pairs of sneakers/boots I own made by North Face.

These are my 3rd pair of 109's. I am very pleased with the fit, feel, performance and longevity. I ordered Salomon XAs, and Merrell Moab Ventilators. The 109's fit best. I have been wearing them for 25 straight days following knee replacement surgery and can say that they are very comfortable. Only been worn around the house and to PT, but judging from my last pairs, I believe these to be just as good. They were true to size - I've been a 10 Med for 45 years and good quality shoes will always stay true to my size. They are also a good looking sneaker/shoe.

I found these shoes quite comfortable. The sole felt a little stiff at first. I use them as a light hiking shoe. I think the substantial sole might be a little much to run in, but then I like a lighter running shoe. Good support for walking or day hiking. They are also waterproof.

I bought these just before a hiking trip. They were a little stiff at first but they broke in nicely and were lightweight. They are not high-end hiking shoes but they were good for the price. I need either 12 or 13 depending on the shoes and these were 12 and were a good fit. I will probably replace the inserts with better ones, which I do on most of my shoes but they were OK.

I bought these to replace a four year old pair of 109s. This model has a more rugged look than the old one which looks more like a trail runner. This was my only concern. When I got them they fit like a glove - better than the old model. Shortly after I received these, I took them on a two month trip to Europe wearing them almost everyday. I walked on cobblestones, streets and off streets, up hills and down. These felt like air pillows. They are fantastic shoes.

Very solid and sturdy walking shoe. I pretty much only urban "hike" in these, so I won't speak to being on the trails or rocks, but in the past I get a good 9-11 months before the outer heel sole begins to erode too much to affect my step. But usually the rest of the shoe still looks great, and it feels odd to toss them but I do like the feel of the intact sole. These new ones look a bit more sturdy but are monochrome -- all black with a bit of grey. I miss the elements of blue in the last similar design. Also, I find I need a half size bigger in these. There's a little room then, but it's easy to tie the shoe tight so as not to move, and I find I need that room for comfort with these.

I work on concrete floor all day and do a lot of trail walking so I was looking for a shoe that could do double duty for both work and play. I have a pair of North Face boots that are so comfortable I decided to try a pair of North Face running shoes. I found the fit of the 109 GTX to be identical to my North Face boots that is to say max comfortable right out of the box ! .... I wear a size ten and these were perfectly sized ......I like the muted colors and the fact that the shoe has Gortex to keep me dry on a long trail walk and a strong toe kick for shop use ..... the price was a bit steep but I feel they were worth the few extra bucks to get something comfortable and durable that meets my needs..... My purchase decision was influenced by the other reviews so goes around comes around and thanks to the other folks that took the time to write a review. I think I'll pick up a second pair in the near future because it isn't often that I find a shoe I like this much.

I honestly can't believe the torture these shoes have endured. I climbed 10,000 feet to Camp Muir in them. I floated countless miles of Deschutes River in them. I scrambled the Deer Mountain rock slide in them. They made Mount Ellinor a breeze. They got me into and out of Anza-Berrego. They made every mud run a cake walk. I have put these shoes through the worst kinds of abuse and only now, a year later, are they showing signs of wear. I honestly hated them at first - the internal "sock" felt tight, they are heavy, they're aesthetically boring - but never has a single pair of shoes lasted this long with what I put shoes through. I've been shopping for months and still don't know if I can trust another make or model, so laces tattered, soles worn, and seams finally splitting (the rubber bits on the outsole are peeling away), my 109s soldier on. Get this shoe if you want mountain goat grip, rock-impact protection, and dry socks at the end of a hike or harsh trail run. Don't get them if you are a speed demon or marathon runner - they are durable but they aren't light and don't drain after submerging them. You should also go for a few runs to acclimate to the sock squeeze. These are currently my most comfortable shoe, but I had to spend a year beating them into submission, and they aren't waterproof anymore - a puny price to pay after so many months of infallible service protecting and serving my feet.

Brands I'd also recommend: Salomon, Scarpa, Lowa, Keen, Patagonia

Great product, I run trails 5 days a week. They are a great fit and keep water out with the GTX product. I'm not sure about the other reviewer, especially when they recommend a brand other than North Face. I think they should get professional fitting advise and make sure they get the correct footwear for the activity.

Brands I'd also recommend: Salewa , Brooks, La Sportiva

Despite having slightly wide feet, the Ultra 109 GTX still fit well. They were omfortable right from the start; I really did not need much of a break-in period. They are good looking. They have comfortable insoles. I wish that the inner lining had a little more padding around the edge. The pull tab on the back is so flimsy and poorly positioned that it is virtually useless.

Great winter sneaker. I like it for it's rugged sole. This is my 1st pair of North Face, as I am partial to Brook's sneakers. This pair feels more toward a winter shoe than it does a sneaker. I will definitely buy another pair.

I had the Ultra 106 GTX. This shoe is pretty much the same, but appears to be slightly more cheaply made and doesn't provide quite the same orthotic and arch support that the 106 did.

I have had the last four iterations of these shoes and this one was a big let down. The styling was weird. The toe cap/shield was huge and the tongue was as wide as a pair of DC shoes for skateboarding. The shoes felt cheaper and did not fit my feet nearly as well as in previous models. I had heard that The North Face has tried to change/remove this shoe in the past and due to customer backlash/demand they brought it back or fixed it. Unfortunately, this was so off the mark that I went to Merrell and found a shoe that is marketed for this exact shoe (Moab Gore-tex XCR). I bought them and love them. Sorry, North Face.

My husband wears a size 14, so most of our shoe shopping is done online. We bought these and they look great. Sadly there is a seam on the heal and it rubs badly. Bummed that we'll be returning these because we both like the look.

Shoe felt great when I first put it on. Footbed fits correctly on my foot. After a few days of wearing the shoes I noticed my feet hurting at the ball of my foot. Heel and arch areas were fine. I tried inserts, but nothing would help me go the whole day. Returned the shoe.
