I'm giving this shoe a 5 star review! The fit was perfect, 7.5 true to size. Walked for miles on trails and they were warm on a really cold day. I love the rounded toe shape. The soles had great grip. The backs didn't slip on me at all and there was no ankle rubbing. Very happy with them!

Okay, I'm going to admit right here and now that I bought these trail shoes for that brilliant little pink dot that rests on the side of the shoes right under where your toes hit...and...of course I'm paying for my shameless vanity choice or I wouldn't be reviewing this shoe as we speak! This is an average shoe and wildly underwhelming in the hiking department. Do you see yourself running up a rock face in Moab or hitting the tree trail for a quick and dirty fun run or trudging through the snow in these? I'm thinking you, like me won't simply for the fact that these shoes have no traction. They have no teeth to bite. Yes, they are waterproof. They have that going for them. Merrell is telling us this is a light shoe but it wears weight-wise much more like my Salomon XA Pro Ultra CS/WP's than the fantastically light Salomon XR Mission CS's. This is a pretty unforgiving, heavy, stiff shoe. There is no foot hugging love or support or technical sexy-ness going on in there at all which in this day and age of excellent trail shoes is pretty unforgivable. Think Brook's Cascadia, then think of a kind of square, dense, unformed shoe and you get the picture. I am a true 8 and they were just snug enough that if I were repurchasing I would recommend anyone with toe problems to go up half a size. I don't know what the break-in time might have been on these, all I know is that I dreaded trying to squeeze my tender picky feet into this unforgiving, stiff mess of a shoe. If you're looking for a pretty mediocre trail shoe that costs as much as the best trail shoes on the market and don't really care about comfort or performance, but like me are tempted by the cute pink dot....you have been warned.

These are terrific shoes - especially for an older person whose gait has been compromised by knee replacement, a broken ankle, and consequent arch issues . We all get old. These shoes are comfortable, stable and give me confidence to walk on all surfaces. I would love them in a summer weight, but that may only be possible on Olympus - but they neither age nor wear shoes in the world of gods so are truly missing out.

I have worn Merrell shoes for years. My size is always a dependable 8 and these shoes were true to form with one added benefit, comfort. I equated support with heavy, but not this shoe. Light, and secure on my feet. If there is a downside, it's the color. It's the blackest shoe I have ever owned but that's okay given all the above! Thank goodness for the purple accents.

I love these shoes. The were comfortable from the minute I put them on. Great for hiking but I wear them almost every day. My daughter wanted some as well so I ordered a pair for her and she told me they were a "treat for her feet". They arrived unbelievably quickly.

This is the pair that I finally decided to have after trying three pairs (thank you, Zappos). The shoes fit snugly yet with a roomy toe box. I feel a sharp drop under the front foot when the my weight is transitioned to the front foot in many Merrell shoes. But this pair does not have such issues. Thus this is the first pair of Merrells that I own.

Wow, I can't believe how hard it is to find waterproof shoes in a plain color. I bought these shoes for an upcoming trip to Australia and New Zealand. I wanted shoes that looked a little nicer than typical hiking shoes for urban exploration. But, they had to work for hiking, too, and then be adaptable to Chicago snowy winters. These shoes fit the bill. Good support, waterproof, and cute.

These are very clunky! Also, the "black" is purple! The picture looks like a trim, understated shoe that would be good for travel. They are so pronounced that I wouldn't be caught dead on the streets of Paris with these! For camping/hiking with tech gear and clothing they would be very nice. Good support. Good cush.

Wanted to keep as seemed well constructed and in a plain black color that was looking for, but left shoe rubbed top of foot where shoe bent while walking. Seemed that potential for getting a blister there. Nice shoes, just not the best for me so returned. Ordered in my regular sneaker size.

I needed a winter walking shoe to keep my feet from freezing. My previous pair gave me shin splints, so I searched for a pair with the negative heel height (which is similar to my current warm weather walking shoe by Brooks). Yes, this is a bit stiff and doesn't mold to my feet (they run a bit narrow), but I added a foot bed liner to take up some extra width. Love the fact that Zappos carried a 10.5 size. When I tried them on at a major retailer there was only 10 or 11. So once again, Zappos Rocks! I also like the color choices of this shoe. Good for winter clothes and very subdued. Thanks!

Are you looking for wider, firm and stable trail shoes? The Proterra are great shoes to try. They run wide for a medium, I would say they are actually a C-D width. They are too narrow for a EE. Because of the Gore-Tex it has little give. The toe box is round, not pointy. It has just enough volume to accommodate custom orthotics and a high instep. They run a bit short, so order up half to a full size. And they are lightweight for rigid shoes. They are very nice.

The insole of these shoes hits my instep in the wrong place, unfortunately. If you're looking for a lightweight waterproof option, though, they're worth a shot. Remarkably lightweight and un-bulky for the protection from the elements they could provide.

Love that Zappos carries small sizes! Looking for a waterproof shoe that could handle both hiking and going out in a city. This was as close I came. What is it with neon-colored trail shoes? I walk a lot and it is very wet here. Needed a shoe I could walk to a restaurant or informal party and could use hiking while traveling. Have neuromas and plantar fascitis so it had to be supportive. These shoes accommodate orthotics, are broad enough in the toe box and fit through the heel. Some reviews note that it can press against ankle. After much walking, don't notice that as much (softened up?) but did notice that it presses against my extremely high instep. The purple ribbon for the laces threads through the tongue. This causes a lump at the highest point of my instep. Most people this wouldn't bother unless you have high insteps. Gave 4 stars for style. Basically still just a running shoe style but not as garish. Wish I could have found something w/ waterproof leather that was dressier.

I have narrow size 8.5 feet. These shoes felt snug - not in a "too small" kind of way, I think that if I ordered a 9 they would be too big. They just felt too stiff and too snug for my liking. Sadly, I am sending them back and my hunt for work shoes continues!

I own many Merrell shoes. I have house shoes only for my home. I loved my Sierra hiking shoe. It looked great and I wore them every day. The Sierra 2 sucks. So I ordered these, which it was out of my price range. It felt great walking lightly around my home but when I was walking faster and trying to get a feel for them I noticed the plastic design on the sides felt like it is pushing highly on my skin. I am disappointed. I only wear Merrells and I might have to start looking for a different shoe company. I am not sure; for the price I need to sleep on it. They may go back.

These guys look great but feel terrible on my feet. Loose in the heel, very stiff, and a hard bulge like a rock under my arch. Maybe they'll work for very serious hikers but for a more casual hiker and urban explorer like me, they are overkill. And they made my knee start to ache as soon as I walked around in them!

I have many pairs of Merrell shoes and love them. Ordered this shoe thinking it would be an incredible travel shoe as it is not flashy and is waterproof. Boy, was I surprised. This shoe does NOT measure up to Merrell standards! Looks great. Feels awful. It is stiff. The toe box does not allow for flexible toe room. Very disappointing.

I love these shoes in black. I ordered a second pair in purple/violet and they feel at least a half, maybe a full size smaller! After checking the size on the shoe, the box, my old pair, these have to go back. Sad day!
