I love Altra, and this new version of the Lone Peak. Cool addition on this model with an updated toe box bumper and really cool Gator Trap at the back. Love the color, but I swapped out the red laces for the black set that came inside the box.

I have some Altra Torins I like for road running and a friend recommended these for trail running so I bought them intending to use them for an upcoming trail marathon. I took them on the marathon course for a 25 mile training run and it was a disaster. The toe box on these felt much too large and my feet were sliding around the whole time making me feel unstable. With the bright red color I started to feel like I was wearing Ronald Mcdonald shoes. The wide toe box kept catching on rocks and roots and I stumbled at least 10 times and had 3 serious falls. I had never fallen before on the same trail while running in my old inov-8 trail shoes. I injured my knee badly on one head over heels fall. I replaced these with a new pair of inov-8 Trailroc's and completed the trail marathon a week later with no stumbles or falls despite slick rainy conditions. I contacted Altra and learned the hard way that the 30 day no-questions-asked satisfaction guarantee they advertise doesn't apply to shoes purchased on Zappos. I guess I missed that fine print hidden somewhere on their website. I wanted to like these, but now I'm stuck with a pair of clown shoes that I would consider dangerous to wear on the trail.

Got to love Altra shoes. I alternate these with Hokas Rapa Nui, and I love both shoes differently. The Lone Peaks are comfortable, supportive, and I just feel stronger in the zero drop shoes after close to a year running in them. The only complaint would be after 40-50 miles I would like to have a shoe with a little more cushion (thank you Altra for listening, and soon to release the Olympus shoe). I have these in both the black and the red, but I do have to say I prefer the black ones. I'll be running my first 100 miler in these this summer.

Brands I'd also recommend: none, this shoe is unique

Great shoes! Lightweight and tons of room in the toebox. No break in time, ready to go. Only complaint is wet traction is bad. Would also like color option besides clown shoe red.

Brands I'd also recommend: Inov8, Vivo

Love this shoe. I am 6' 8", size 14 and 190lbs. With wide feet at the toes, it's nice to finally have a shoe that fits well. I've taken it on all different surfaces and climates. Holds up well and stays comfortable.

Brands I'd also recommend: Brooks, New Balance, Patagonia

I picked these up on the recommendation from a friend who got me interested in trail running. These shoes were designed for serious trail running (Wasatch 100 in particular). I had signed up for a 10 mile (mostly single track) race with about 1100' of elevation change. Not a crazy run, but definitely not a walk in the park. I took a short 4 mile jog to make sure there weren't any issues before my race. Jog went well and the race went even better. Took 5th overall on my first trail race and the shoes blew me away. No foot pain after the tough race. As for some of the other reviews that call out the color and width, I'm not sure why someone wouldn't return the shoes they bought from Zappos if they caused that much issue. Seems more like a review directing people towards other shoes rather than a review of these shoes.

Altra is the only shoe brand I've found with zero-difference heel-toe combined with decent arch support and padding. I'm not crazy about the red color, but I already owned last year's version (gray and yellow) so I knew the fit would be good. I'm not a trail runner, and the heel claw is a drawback for everyday usage (especially walking in sand, driving a car and going down stairs). I mainly use them as turf shoes for playing ultimate frisbee. My only real complaint (I knew about the color and heel claw before buying) is that the shoestrings are really long. The flop on the ground even with a double knot. Like any mesh shoe, durability is not great. If you haven't tried zero-drop/barefoot shoes before, you might want to first buy them from a place with a better return policy. The instructions recommend a gradual two-week break-in period before making an assessment, which will make them difficult to return to Zappos if it doesn't work out. And you likely do need the break-in period -- my calves were killing me after the first few days of trying these.

I'm very conflicted about these shoes. On the one hand I really like the wide toe box and the Zero drop but there are so many problems with this shoe. For starters they absolutely killed my feet; I'm currently hiking the pacific crest trail and thought if give them a try and my feet got so sore that I've had to take five days off (and counting). Also I've only had them about two weeks and they are falling apart, the side has totally opened up, and they provide zero arch support. They do seem well designed, but not well made, and a lot of people out here love them but these were my first and last pair. Not recommended.

I wanted to like this pair. I liked the Torin so much that I bought this for my trail running. I currently run anywhere from 40 to 60+ miles/week on mixed surfaces. I love the wide toebox of Altra shoes. My toes are very happy in these shoes. The problem with Lone Peak, however, is their treads. I took them to a 20-mile run on trails with a lot of loose rocks and big boulders. First, they were not sticking to boulders - very slippery. It may get better over time but I was not very happy with sliding on big rocks on steep trains. Second, the treads (knobs) are breaking down just after one run! I weigh about 150lbs and am a light-footed runner. Regardless, trail running shoes cannot be breaking down after 20 miles! They are fine on soft surfaces but I don't recommend these for rocks...
