After doing some research, I was really excited to try out the Hoka Stinson Tarmac. The cushioning is excellent. However, the material and stitching in the upper is far too thick and stiff. After a brief run (2 miles), the tops of my middle toes were cut up! I've tried thicker running socks and had the same issue. When I toe off (especially when walking), the uppers above the toes dig in and irritate. Unfortunately, they've been lightly worn and cannot be returned. I really wanted to love these shoes! I've never before had this issue with running shoes.

I had such high hopes for these! I have run 25+ marathons/ultras and more 1/2's than I have kept count of and anxiously bought these when they went on sale. I previously tried these on at a HOKA booth at a race for feel and sizing before ordering online. When I received them they were as expected comfortable on first try on and super cushy, was excited to run in them. My first few runs in them found me frustrated with the "no tie" mechanism that they come with, I couldn't get it tight enough- So I ditched it for the standard laces that they also supplied in the box, while they were definitely better I still had issues. The soles of my feet were consistently sore, it felt like I was a beginner again, not a seasoned 35+ mile a week runner. I tried to stay opened minded and give them 50 miles to break in before racing in them, but it just never happened. Then race day arrived, I attempted to run a relatively flat/easy marathon course that I have previously run twice and ended up with such bad pain in my left foot & IT band that I thought I had an injury and ended the race at mile 20 with my first EVER DNF. Having never had an IT band injury before I did not want to push out the last miles as I could barely walk, let alone run!! Got home, iced, rolled, elevated, anti-inflammatories for two days and hoped for the best. Realized pretty quick it was due to the shoes, just simply not working for me. On day three I grabbed my trusty Asics and towed the line for a half marathon and completed without incident! These are not the shoes for me! I am extra disappointed because I spent a pretty penny on these and they are already retired, I have NEVER had a bad experience like this in any other shoe in my 8 years of running. I would not invest them money for all the hype around these shoes for running. My experience only, I know others swear by them!
