I'm writing in defense of NB's innovative new boot. Touche! A perfect fit for my wide feet and even accommodates my orthotic. I live in the cold mountains of Idaho and this is an ideal winter boot. The insulation provides warmth, the soul is a wonderful Vibram that has the perfect grip. And all my treks through snow find this boot totally waterproof. They look great in town as well. This is a break from the stiff winter boots we usually have to deal with. It feels like a tennis shoe and total cudo's to NB for being at the cutting edge with a break through product that is enhancing my winter experience.

My wife and I both ordered these boots, also in Wide knowing the Narrowness of the shoes made in China now a days! The "throat" area, gusset is far too high up on the side and very narrow. It was next to impossible to get the shoe on without a huge effort. And when on it was tight for both of us. The sole is extremely stiff at room temp., can only imagine it at 0 degrees or below! The no stitching all glued together does not look like a good idea and probably won't last long without eventually coming apart---these are cold weather boots and glue and cold don't go well together! New Balance has been my favorite footwear for years, but as far as I'm concerned they "Missed the Boat" on this model! If boots had "Recalls" this one would qualify!

Very comfortable shoe. Doesn't feel so heavy once on my feet. Like the heavy duty laces. They have held up to all sorts of tougher outside wear from working in the yard to playing in the snow with my family. We have a yard with some steep slopes and I feel these provide better ankle support as I walk around and my foot goes through all kinds of challenging terrain.

Great shoes. My feet were always cold till I got these. They fit very well, and you can get them in wide sizes if needed. I walk, hikes, snow shoe and stay completely warm even in very cold temperatures.

I bought these to wear on our trip to Chicago to see our daughter graduate from the Navy. They worked really well. The only problem is that after a lot of wear they rub against your ankle at the highest aspect of the shoe.

Very comfortable shoe. Zappos makes sure the customer is always right. If it isn't right they will fix it at their expense. Speedy, free delivery, and although I have not had to use it, free return postage on any item. This is my second shoe purchase and I just can't say enough about how great the Zappos family is. If you are hesitating, don't. For the price and the all around guarantee you cannot go wrong.

I think these boots are great! Comfortable like a sneaker, compared to your typical boot. Good cushioning and traction. Enough insulation to keep your feet warm without being bulky. Nice snug feel with a well padded tongue. I was looking for a pair of boots that not only looked good but would be different (in a good way) than your common looking winter/hiking boot...found them!

First, I found the reviews I read prior to purchasing these boots helpful. Specifically, they were a little narrower than a typical New Balance 4E has always fit me. However, they did loosen-up and are quite comfortable even if a little narrower. Don't let it stop you from buying! I did buy 1/2 size larger per some suggestions and that was good advice. These boots are by far the most comfortable winter boots I have ever had. I walk many miles with my dog, both on city streets and hiking in woods and these boots have dramatically changed the winter-health of my feet. I used to pray for Spring just to be able to switch back to shoes, now I just pray for Spring because I'm tired of winter. I live in NH and these boots are warm and great in the snow. After about a week of walking in them if you didn't know better you would never guess you were walking in boots, they are as comfortable as running shoes.

I have a foot deformity that makes winter boots sore and uncomfortable for me. After a long search (shop) I'm glad that I found these 4E width New Balance boots. I find them comfortable for long walks and warm. The traction is good and they are lightweight.

No one should be concerned that these boots aren't warm enough for what they are designed to do (they aren't arctic pac-boots for standing around). They are lightweight athletic winter boots with a sneaker like feel. Anyone using these boots as such should first go out & get themselves a good thick pair of wool socks (google Fox River Mills or extreme Alpaca socks for example) and size up your boot over the socks you plan to wear. Do not size them over the thin pair of cotton ankle socks you wore with your running shoes over the summer (you may be surprised to find that you need a good 1 to 1 1/2 size larger than your summer runners, even in the wides!). I personally usually take an 11 sneaker (depending on brand) but needed a 12 1/2 wide over my winter socks with the NB 1099 and they fit great, comfortable, warm, and cushioned! Free your mind from the numbers game and go with what fits! The NB 1099 is perfect for this since they have wide sizes to accommodate thicker socks. Do not buy any brand trying to sell you a "winter" boot/shoe without offering wide sizes for this reason (unless their standard sizes naturally run wide or you have very narrow feet). The last thing you want in the winter are tight boots as they compress and slow circulation to your feet making them dangerously cold. Also, for those with extra cold feet, the NB 1099 has a removable footbed that can be replaced with - you guessed it - a warm woolen insole (google The Buffalo Wool Co for example). Wearing warm socks & fitting a warm insole to your boots, which you should be doing anyway, not only to your NB 1099 (if you're serious about using them), will make them usable well below freezing. Your fingers and your face will freeze before your feet do! The fact that they are also insulated, lightweight & as seamless/one piece construction (for waterproofness) as a boot can get at this price makes them one of the best winter boots I have ever worn/run/hiked in. By the way, NB had them designed by a company called FYI based in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada, and they know cold! You are shopping at Zappos so take advantage of the easy returns and order one size below and one size above what you think you are (in wide unless you have very narrow feet). Try all of them on with your winter socks and keep the one that fits the best. Remember to leave room to wiggle your toes because your feet will swell slightly with activity, and a pair of boots that fits "perfect" in your living room will start to feel tight on the run. That's how I do it. Do this with your NB 1099 (or any other winter boot for that matter) and you'll love them.

Very warm and comfortable! So warm that I can't wear them in the house, but outside they are great. The sole is built like a running shoe, with a bottom that is great on the ice and snow.

I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews. These really are great all purpose boots. They are really lightweight and warm. They have a rugged Vibram sole with a great tread for ice and wet rock. They run true to New Balance sneaker sizing. I ordered the same size as my favorite trail runners (the 610v), and got a perfect fit. They are snug around the ankles by design which is a great support. I hope they will stand up to a few solid years of hiking.

I was looking for a comfortable boot that I could wear while walking the dogs in snow and rain, as well as something to keep my feet warm while coaching hockey. So far, so good. Two snow storms and many nasty, muddy days later and my feet never got wet. The rubber/grip combo is great on ice and slippery surfaces. Also, the material is much easier to wash off than treated leather. The only complaint I have would be how the back of the boot pushes against my achilles/lower calf. If you break it in a bit using your hands (like a baseball mitt), it's much better. I'm assuming as they get worn more it will only get more comfy. As for coaching, come to find out -- I'm too much of a fashion snob to rock these sneaker boots with a shirt and tie...only Canadian coaches could pull that look off. But great to and from practice!

I'm a big fan of New Balance due to their continued partial USA manufacturing and that their minimalist line is on point. With that stated, I can't recommend the New Balance MO1099 boots. Sure they look great, are warm and have Vibram soles but the discomfort around the ankle and instep cannot be ignored. I constantly have to adjust the laces and tongue until I finally resorted to cushioning pads that I put in the boots. Hopefully they will put more padding around the ankle, top and tongue.

As others have written, the space inside the shoe is very tight. I would never bee able to wear these with any kind of thermal socks. They are fairly good shoes after you manage to get them on your feet. I wear a size 8 4E. If you have a high instep, you may want to look elsewhere.

True to size, fit to foot well. Unfortunately, there is a lined seam at ankle level that feels fine initially, but after worn a few hours, rubs against the inside ankle bone and gets sore. So I bought these and wore them inside, they seemed fine, then took a hike in them in the woods. Ouch! And can't return them now. And they're ugly, which would be fine if they were comfortable.

Two stars is being nice. I wear a 9½ 4E. New Balance typically fits my width though sometimes they run a little narrow. As for these boots the pro is that they look great and are just as stylish as in the picture provided. The color is a cool slate gray with mauve Primaloft. I was so excited because New Balance finally designed shoes that did not look like they were orthotics! Honestly, New Balance makes some of the ugliest shoe soles around so these boots looked like New Balance was turning over a new chapter. The fit of the foot was actually pretty good. The width was pretty accomodating, there was a little too much room in the heel but once laced up it was negligible. There is also the odd fact that you cannot really wear them comfortably unless you lace up all the way to the top. Finally, the tongue is not attached from the top of the foot up so if any water gets to the top of the laces it is getting through. The main thing that did not feel quite right was the throat of the boot which was very stiff. I figured that I would break them in. I wore these boots two days in a row through the first snowstorm of 2014 in New York City. I went to work in them and I stay on my feet most of the day and also walk deliveries around the neighborhood. The result was disappointing. Not only was water getting in and soaking my socks (I do not know how as there are no visible holes) the stiffness of the throat did not have any give and eventually walking around these boots was extremely painful. For boots that fit my actual feet they were the most uncomfortable footwear that I have ever worn. I do not know how there are positive reviews for these shoes unless those reviewers just sat in place while wearing them. To conclude, these shoes are beautiful and very good-looking but upon use they are almost unbearable. I do not think the New Balance team did any research into how good boots are made. I am not sure how they came up with this torture device. Save your money for something else.

Having wide feet I've worn 11.5 4E running shoes comfortably forever. Finding quality, wide hiking boots is difficult so I hoped these would be good. I purchased size 12 4E. When I first put them on I knew they were a lot narrower. I even tried a 12.5 4E and they didn't feel any different. I'm also using a pair of 12 3E Propet Cliff Walker boots. These are very comfortable and truly wide. The sole of the Propet boots don't hold up very long - so I've needed to replace them every 6 months or so. My wife also tried a pair of the 1099 boots (Women's version) directly from New Balance in D width and they were narrower than her existing B width boots - so she returned them.

It was difficult to get these boots on. A bad start. Once on they felt too narrow. Not impossibly narrow, but I knew that they would never be quite right. As a person with wide feet, I have suffered with badly fitting shoes most of my life. So, I sent them back. Why does New Balance design boots like this and then make them narrower than a true 4E width? If they are interested in this segment of the market, why not make boots that are true to width? I really wanted to like these boots. I'm not going to waste time on another pair.

The top of the shoe above the ankle was very uncomfortable for me, the entire top portion felt very very stiff, more so than the usual pre-break-in feel of a shoe, and there was a spot on the inside top that also hurt my ankle. When you think of NB you think they'll be super comfortable like their athletic shoes, especially being made of rip-stop nylon. But not these. Back they go.

Way too narrow. These boots, while marked a 12 4E are quite a bit narrower than my existing shoes of the same size. I can't even get me feet through the narrow top of the boot. a shame because they look and feel nice. Zappos processed and shipped them promptly as usual. I'll be returning them and getting a new pair from the site. Glad they have such a great return policy!

The width is good for people with wide feet and they are lightweight - not heavy. The ankle counter has minimal padding and makes your ankles sore. I found the foot bed to have minimal padding and didn't provide good warmth. If it is 40 degrees or above, they keep your feet warm. If it is below 40 degrees, I found they didn't keep my feet warm. I spend a lot of time outside (my feet normally don't get cold) and I was disappointed in the lack of warmth these boots provided. For the price I felt they looked like they were made cheaply. I don't find them overly good in slippery conditions. I was disappointed in these boots. These boots need more padding and warmth. The best thing about the boots was the wide width and the lightweight. To run errands they would be fine. To spend a lot of time outside they will not provide the needed warmth. I haven't been able to determine yet if these boots are waterproof. I expected these boots to be better.
