I'm writing in defense of NB's innovative new boot. Touche! A perfect fit for my wide feet and even accommodates my orthotic. I live in the cold mountains of Idaho and this is an ideal winter boot. The insulation provides warmth, the soul is a wonderful Vibram that has the perfect grip. And all my treks through snow find this boot totally waterproof. They look great in town as well. This is a break from the stiff winter boots we usually have to deal with. It feels like a tennis shoe and total cudo's to NB for being at the cutting edge with a break through product that is enhancing my winter experience.

My wife and I both ordered these boots, also in Wide knowing the Narrowness of the shoes made in China now a days! The "throat" area, gusset is far too high up on the side and very narrow. It was next to impossible to get the shoe on without a huge effort. And when on it was tight for both of us. The sole is extremely stiff at room temp., can only imagine it at 0 degrees or below! The no stitching all glued together does not look like a good idea and probably won't last long without eventually coming apart---these are cold weather boots and glue and cold don't go well together! New Balance has been my favorite footwear for years, but as far as I'm concerned they "Missed the Boat" on this model! If boots had "Recalls" this one would qualify!

I have a foot deformity that makes winter boots sore and uncomfortable for me. After a long search (shop) I'm glad that I found these 4E width New Balance boots. I find them comfortable for long walks and warm. The traction is good and they are lightweight.

No one should be concerned that these boots aren't warm enough for what they are designed to do (they aren't arctic pac-boots for standing around). They are lightweight athletic winter boots with a sneaker like feel. Anyone using these boots as such should first go out & get themselves a good thick pair of wool socks (google Fox River Mills or extreme Alpaca socks for example) and size up your boot over the socks you plan to wear. Do not size them over the thin pair of cotton ankle socks you wore with your running shoes over the summer (you may be surprised to find that you need a good 1 to 1 1/2 size larger than your summer runners, even in the wides!). I personally usually take an 11 sneaker (depending on brand) but needed a 12 1/2 wide over my winter socks with the NB 1099 and they fit great, comfortable, warm, and cushioned! Free your mind from the numbers game and go with what fits! The NB 1099 is perfect for this since they have wide sizes to accommodate thicker socks. Do not buy any brand trying to sell you a "winter" boot/shoe without offering wide sizes for this reason (unless their standard sizes naturally run wide or you have very narrow feet). The last thing you want in the winter are tight boots as they compress and slow circulation to your feet making them dangerously cold. Also, for those with extra cold feet, the NB 1099 has a removable footbed that can be replaced with - you guessed it - a warm woolen insole (google The Buffalo Wool Co for example). Wearing warm socks & fitting a warm insole to your boots, which you should be doing anyway, not only to your NB 1099 (if you're serious about using them), will make them usable well below freezing. Your fingers and your face will freeze before your feet do! The fact that they are also insulated, lightweight & as seamless/one piece construction (for waterproofness) as a boot can get at this price makes them one of the best winter boots I have ever worn/run/hiked in. By the way, NB had them designed by a company called FYI based in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada, and they know cold! You are shopping at Zappos so take advantage of the easy returns and order one size below and one size above what you think you are (in wide unless you have very narrow feet). Try all of them on with your winter socks and keep the one that fits the best. Remember to leave room to wiggle your toes because your feet will swell slightly with activity, and a pair of boots that fits "perfect" in your living room will start to feel tight on the run. That's how I do it. Do this with your NB 1099 (or any other winter boot for that matter) and you'll love them.

I ordered my husbands NB sneaker size (11EEEE) and found the boots short and narrow. A full size larger (12 EEEE) and they fit. He wears them all weekend!

Very warm and comfortable! So warm that I can't wear them in the house, but outside they are great. The sole is built like a running shoe, with a bottom that is great on the ice and snow.

The width is good for people with wide feet and they are lightweight - not heavy. The ankle counter has minimal padding and makes your ankles sore. I found the foot bed to have minimal padding and didn't provide good warmth. If it is 40 degrees or above, they keep your feet warm. If it is below 40 degrees, I found they didn't keep my feet warm. I spend a lot of time outside (my feet normally don't get cold) and I was disappointed in the lack of warmth these boots provided. For the price I felt they looked like they were made cheaply. I don't find them overly good in slippery conditions. I was disappointed in these boots. These boots need more padding and warmth. The best thing about the boots was the wide width and the lightweight. To run errands they would be fine. To spend a lot of time outside they will not provide the needed warmth. I haven't been able to determine yet if these boots are waterproof. I expected these boots to be better.

The boots looked awesome but when I went to try them on I was very disappointed. First off the upper ankle portion of the boot is way to stiff and the foot hole is way to small. After I pulled and stomped my foot down into the boot it was way to narrow. I wear a size 11 extra wide and have always loved the fit of my New Balance 608/609/624 shoes so I thought I would try these boots - what a mistake. Oh well its Christmas time so I will gift these to my cousin and see what he thinks. If these boots were more like a hiking style boot design and actually ran true to width I think they could be great."
