My teenage son needed a new backpack because his Swiss Gear Synergy Laptop Carrying Backpack broke in different places. My son has a 17.5 inch laptop that he carries around and it was just a bit too big for the Swiss Gear backpack (which seems sturdy) and eventually the backpack just fell apart. We researched and read the reviews here in Zappos about the Big Student and decided to try it. This is our first purchase from Zappos. We live in Hawaii and have limited places where we can buy backpacks in the middle of the school year. Being able to purchase online is just wonderful. We heard about Zappos from a colleague. Our order actually took quite a few days before Zappos was able to fill and get it shipped, but it was okay and the shipping took many a couple more days than if we were in the Mainland USA. When the Big Student backpack arrived, we took it out of the box and felt very dubiously about it. The backpack looked small, like a regular backpack. My son didn't even really want to try it but I urged him to try it anyway since it was here. Lo and behold! His 17.5 inch laptop went in so effortlessly. He could even choose between the very rear compartment and the compartment in front of that to store his laptop. All of us were stunned. He then put in all of his gear and like many reviews stated here -- everything fit! The amazing thing is, after he gets all of his gear in, the backpack still does not look big; it really looks 'regular.' He is very happy with his backpack, able to go to school without having to carry anything in his hands. We got it in black, his favorite color and it looks great. With JanSports' Lifetime Warranty, how much more can one want? Thanks to Zappos! A very grateful "thank you" for the free shipping, too. Will definitely be ordering from Zappos again. Mwah!

My teenage son needed a new backpack that was durable, stylish, and most importantly one that fit all of his books, binders and sports clothes/shoes. This one does fit all of his requirements! It's a bonus that it also fits his laptop. While it looks big when its full, it fits everything he needs, and he is more an thrilled that he doesn't need to take any extra bags with him on the already crowded bus. This is a great backpack. Very sturdy and lots of room for books, lunch, p.e. clothes and anything else a student needs to carry. These were available locally, but with limited selection. The Zappos selection was much greater and my daughter was able to find the perfect pack for her. I loved that it didn't cost any more online than at the brick and mortar store, it arrived quickly and was in perfect condition. Combine that with the Jansport guarantee and you've got the perfect choice for a student backpack.

Trying to buy a backpack for a tween at middle school is an ongoing saga. Too small too heavy etc. This fits all the criteria at last! Its huge so even the lunch box fits. It is very comfortable and distributes the weight evenly so it feels light even packed with huge text books. Above all else its cool. Phew at last...

Hey there, first of all Zappos service is supreme! Best in the world! Unmatched! The JanSport Big Student backpack is great for the humble student... The padded straps make it feel secure on your body, as opposed to the dinky straps of the Superbreak or the Right Pack. Two negatives about this backpack are the fact that it does not have a sleeve on the back wall (used for laptops or binders) and the mesh water bottle holder is a tacky extra. However overall if you are looking for a sturdy, humble, good for everyday use, type of backpack buy it! (If you want to cut the mesh on the side do it neatly and carefully, it might work out!)

I always choose content over form, in music, cars, restaurants, and people. This bag holds more than you think, and I love that. It doesn't have the snazzy, high-tech look of the more expensive, same size bags; instead it just carries more of your stuff, and better organized, since it has two big pockets instead of one like most of the others. Not the bag you need if you want to impress the other shoppers by rappelling off the second floor of REI, but will carry most everything you need for a weekend in Hawaii.

I LOVE this bag! I'm a freshman so I have a lot of books to carry and this bag handles them all! The only downside I see is that the straps are a little funny shaped and hurt my shoulders if I don't adjust them correctly. But besides that the backpack rocks!
