Heads up, Ladies! I'm not sure why, but I assumed these boots had a zipper of some kind. Not so! They are very difficult to pull on. There is a sort of loop, but it's very tight, too small for most fingers to fit into, and located more on the inside than the outside of the boot, so your leg and fingers are fighting for the same space as you try to pull the boots up. I was intrigued because of what seemed like a wider than usual calf, but the reality of the style is that they are as slim as most of the boots those of us with more athletic legs have been suffering from lo these last 10 years. I ordered a 7 and found the foot-to-calf ratio off - the shoe portion of the boot was more like a 7.5, and the calf portion more like a 6. Great if you're in the skinny leg camp, but not so much for the rest of us.

These boots are fantastic. The leather is beautiful and so is the craftsmanship. They are really comfortable and it's so nice to have leather lining on the inside. You can tell these boots will last a very long time, and they fit perfectly over my athletic calves, too. They are just a nice, simple black leather tall boot. Not too English equestrian, not too western ? just right. I never write reviews but felt so happy about these boots that I signed on to say that I am so glad I purchased these boots.

These are THE BOOTS. Plain but attractive, sturdy, very well-made, comfortable, and waterproof. Already they have kept my feet and calves dry in rain and slush while looking good with pants and skirts alike. I anticipate many happy years of wear from these boots; they're quality. Order a half size down, though.

These are just the boots that I have been looking for! The quality of the leather, the comfort and classic style are all top notch. They are just a bit roomy in the heel but with all the positives, I will deal. I am hoping for the same boots in brown!

In a word...Awesome! I was looking for a pair of good quality boots. I had a pair of Frye boots (Melissa button) but after only 6 weeks the heel was peeling away...on a pair of expensive boots. Anyway, last year, left the busy sprawl of NYC to stay on an Indian reservation in South Dakota...there I discovered cowboy boots. Waterproof, indestructible...so I figured I would try to find a pair of cowboy-like boots...good sole, leather lined...but without the Western look (just not my thing). I had had Durango ones, so I first tried Durango boots (Philly Harness 13" shaft to be precise). They were awful! The leather was cheap, the lining was mesh not leather (my fault...should have paid attention) and the feel overall was just terrible. Then, I saw these and decided to take a chance. Made in the USA with a leather lined 15" shaft and rubber sole...perfect! They felt like I owned them for years right out of the box. Is the leather as thick as Frye? No. But that actually turned out to be a great thing. Those Melissa Button boots I mentioned were so thick leatherwise that it took weeks to stretch the calf out (the calf fit but tight when I flexed)...this meant that each time I flexed my calf, it pushed the boot shaft downwards, bulging out the ankle. So I got a ton of creases and folds worn in to the ankle area. With these, the slightly (I do mean slightly) thinner leather meant that they stretched easily at the calf and now fit like they were meant for me. Also, there are a few areas in which they outdid Frye...like the sole. Frye's is leather on the Melissa button...leather peels (or it can anyway). These are rubber...so great for wet areas (I live in Seattle now). The Justin boots also have a better liner and a more cushioned footbed. The inside of the Frye boots were raw or felt so from the ankle to the toe. These are lined in a really soft leather. The Frye boots didn't have any cushion to speak of...the Justin boots are incredibly soft. It feels a lot like Converse all-stars, but covered in leather. The toe box and width is a little wider on the Justin boots, which suits me well. I can sometimes require wider width shoes, although not always...and I like the fact that the Justin boots slide at the heel...pull on boots are supposed to. If you are looking for a great plain boot...try these! (I got these in black the leather is a very nice full grain...I can't speak to the other colors.)

I absolutely love these! They are perfect for basic black boots that can be dressed up or down. I have been looking for a pair of classic, unadorned black riding boots and these are it! In fact, this brand is actually made for cowgirls/boys. In a strange way I like that my boots were made for working and can withstand any climate or situation. I also have a strange pet peeve where I do not like the profile of my boots to be too narrow at the ankle (which then makes the calves look bigger). I believe these boots, among other similar styles that I tried from Zappos, give, literally the perfect streamlined silhouette. One minor thing is that these boots had a really strange smell - like the smell of Home Depot. It smelled chemically and not like leather as some of the reviewers mentioned. I was also a bit concerned that the tag said that these boots could be related to cancer? These was a tag warning about California Propr 65. Well, I am going to just ignore details which are small in my longtime search for the perfect basic black boots.

These are great boots. The leather is soft, supple, and thick, and smells great. The shape of the shaft is imo just right - straight up from the side, almost straight up from the front (it may be more straight for those with smaller calves), with just a bit of scrunching around the ankles. I am usually a 10/9½, and I ordered a 9½. The fit in the foot is good, and seems comfortable (although there is not as much padding as I was expecting based on the description and other reviews). The shaft is a perfect width for my 14¾" calves. About three fingers of wiggle room without jeans, and fits over tight skinny jeans easily with a bit of snugness, without bunching them up. Really nice. There are only two drawbacks that I can see. First is that the line where the inner structure of the toe of the boot ends is pretty visible looking down at the foot. It is not as obvious when walking, and I am not sure whether that is something that will relax out or not. Second is that these are not boots to make your feet look smaller - if that is important to you, you should think about different boots. Even with these minor issues, these are really nice, clearly well-made boots. I love them.

Brands I'd also recommend: Frye, Rag and Bone

I love these boots to death, and I'm hoping to wear them for years to come. I wanted a boot that was actually sturdy, as I live on a farm and transition from a muddy paddock to work and my college campus. These are just as comfortable as my Justin work boots. They're not nearly as refined as some of the dress boots I've had in the past; the leather is thick, the sole is substantial and the calf/shaft is a very straight, not contoured like many boots. But then again, those are the reasons I bought them. I'm kind of thinking that I could ride in them too! My one, single caution is that the calf is very narrow. They fit my semi-narrow calf size, with leggings and a pair of thin socks. They would not accommodate jeans, but I'm going to take them to my local shoe shop to see if they can stretch them a bit. They're also pretty stiff (real, durable leather) but I'm totally confident that they'll break in shortly.

I wanted a rugged boot but could not find a men's work boot in my size. I like cowboy styling but hate all the gingerbread they usually tart them up with and the really pointy toes look painful. These look like they could have come from an old photograph from the 1800's! Classic styling! I love the high tops and they feel great right out of the box. I am so pleased I wear them all the time.

I was pretty pleased to be able wear some knee high boots. Usually they are way too snug to fit over my calves. The leather on my boots is sturdy enough so it doesn't slouch down when I'm wearing them but soft enough that they don't stand upright on their own. The arch support is pretty much non existent, but I put in some super feet and they are good to go. I love these boots!

Way too distressed for me! The foot was dark, as was the strip going up the side of the shaft, but the rest was several shades lighter.. It looked ridiculous. I wanted to like these boots so much... I have them in black and I can honestly say they are the best pair of boots I have ever owned, but they fail in Moka... Maybe you will luck out and yours will be the same color all over... I however was not so lucky.

Well, sadly I cannot wear these because my calves are too fat. I did measure them and thought I could get into a boot with a 16" circumference (I wear an 8M) but, it was not to be. I like the style and the fact that they're made in the U.S. but I have no choice but to send these back.
