Although the idea of a minimalist barefoot hiking boot is great, it's pretty clear that Terra Plana hasn't quite done it with this Vivobarefoot boot. It's really, really stiff, which really defeats the purpose, and for those with very wide feet the toebox may be just a hair too small. Kudos for effort, though.

When I first started wearing Vivobarefoot shoes 3-4 years ago their philosophy was clearly centered in having plenty of room for ones toes to spread in the toebox of their shoes, in fact it was the whole premise behind their barefoot technology. This is absolutely not the case with this new line of shoes that they are making, along with all of their other new designs that follow this oddly narrow foot bed/toe box shape as well. Bottom line, if you like the way their Evo shoes fit or how their Kariba boots used to fit (god only knows why they stopped making the Kariba's... i.e. http://www.vivobarefoot.com/us/community/?tag=kariba ), you are not going to like the "Off Road High." With no exaggerations, these are almost as tight and narrow as rock climbing shoes. I really do like Vivobarefoot as a company, and I'm a fan of many of their shoes, so I say this with respect, What in the world were they thinking with this new narrow toebox design?

I will first state that I was instantly impressed upon opening this package. The materials and construction appear first rate. They even had a slightly classier look than I expected. I was immediately shocked at how stiff the uppers were, but it was evident just in walking around my living room that they would quickly break-in just fine with a little wear. My problem turned out to be the room at the toes. These are not just slightly narrow in the toe box, they are too snug for me. Although my preference now is for more wide toed "Minimalist" footwear, I never felt I had wide feet. I really wished these worked out.

These were a big disappointment. They are very stiff, and felt like I was walking in ski boots. I have other "regular" hiking boots which are much more flexible, so these really defeat the purpose of ordering "barefoot" shoes. Also, several splashes of glue were visible on the shoe; poor quality control continues to be an issue with Vivobarefoot.

I received my shoes a few weeks ago and was still kicking myself for spending so much on a pair of boots. The shoes are beautiful. Although there was some visible glue which when you're paying this much for some shoes should really not be there. They are very comfortable (after taking them out and wearing them). If you're into the whole "barefoot" thing, you should really appreciate these shoes.

Just like it says. I didn't like them until I took the inserts out, then very nice.

I have only been wearing Vivos for a year and a half now, and these are the first barefoot boots I have tried. My foot is very wide, and I have Morton's toe so I am especially susceptible to neuromas and bunions. I initially ordered my normal Vivo size but they were too narrow and the toe box was very cramped. After returning them for a larger size, these boots work excellently, even with heavy hiking socks. They do a great job of keeping water out but can build up sweat depending on your level of activity. Mine are almost a year old now and are beginning to show signs of wear around where the outsole meets the leather. This doesn't surprise me though because I've been putting these things through some hard use (including shoveling, hiking, surveying). I think it can all be fixed with a little shoe goo. The boots were initially kinda stiff but they have broken in very nicely after a little wear and are quite flexible now (and light!). All in all, these are pretty good boots for minimalist hikers but make sure you order one full size up from your normal Vivo size (the only reason it didn't get the full 5 stars).

I wore these shoes this fall for a couple of hundred miles' hiking in the Utah desert. I'm 68, hike a lot, and and have had increasing difficulty finding comfortable boots as the years go on. I have a wide forefoot and had to tie of the laces a few eyelets from the bottom so the front end of the boot stayed loose while I laced the top part tight. I wore thin hiking socks and with this arrangement these boots were VERY comfortable on all sorts of terrain, from slickrock to forest soil to loose sand. They are lightweight, but seem to stand up pretty well. I don't know what they would be like with an 80 lb. pack, but for day-hiking with a light load I will never wear anything else from now on. They have excellent traction, although some of the tread around the heel wore down more than I thought it should have. So with these caveats I highly recommend this boot. It's a superior item for light to medium hiking.

Flexible shoe, looks cool, squeaks like hell for the first few days. It is not that breathable. My feet got hot as hell. Maybe better for fall or beginning of spring.

I was really excited about these boots, but unfortunately their quality just does not hold up. The sole of the boot is stiffer and gives less feel for the ground than most of the other VivoBarefoot shoes that I've worn, but given their purpose, I could definitely live with them. They were also fairly stiff, but like all hiking boots, I would expect a "break-in" period, so again not a problem. The real problem is that the lacing system broke after only wearing the boots for 5 days. The "Quick Lace" cleat on one boot snapped clean off, and that was that. Upon examining the cleat, it appears to be made of plastic! Could have been a real problem if I were out on a multi-day hike and have this thing break. I'm just glad it happened in my bedroom instead of out on the trail. A good idea by VivoBarefoot, just poor execution. I'm returning these boots and going to try the new barefoot hiking boot made by Merrell. I hope I have better luck with the other brand.

I experienced terrible durability: the seam at the toe on both shoes split, the waterproofing failed, and 4 of the top plastic shoelace holder pieces broke, meaning I can't lace them up the whole way. Two other co-workers have experienced similar issues with their off-road hi's. We do wilderness therapy with moderate hiking...and these shoes have just not stood up to it in any way, shape or form.
