I was originally unwilling to order this pair of boots since there are similar styles offered by other brands for a lower price. However, I am so glad I eventually bit the bullet because like all Fryes these shoes are awesome. These are one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I've ever owned and they are stylish and made out of high-quality, thick leather. The bottoms are very slick and can be worn through easily (especially if you wear these babies literally every day like I do) but this is nothing a trip to the cobbler can't fix. (I had a thick, non-slip, plastic sole added.) They have fared well in the rain so far with some waterproofing spray and will probably be taken out on some icy sidewalks when the East Coast eventually gets some snow this winter.

These are great boots. I bought a pair for myself and my daughter, however, be advised that the color shown, cognac, is not the color you get. These boots are more in line with the dark brown tone.

These are great boots! I got them a 1/2 size smaller as suggested by others, and perfect fit (I'm a certified 9 and got an 8.5). They look great on, and I love them... this was my Christmas present to me and of course kudos to Zappos as usual for their 5 star fast delivery thank you!

Beautiful shoes, but believe the other reviewers who write that they run at least a half size long and are narrow. They are very stiff out of the box and will take some breaking in.

I spent quite a lot of time looking at reviews and checking out boots, looking for the perfect pair. I can't say these are perfect, but I get a lot of compliments and they are very utilitarian, though I wonder about how they'll hold up in the wet NW winters, I'll let you know. Oh and I bought a half-size smaller and glad I did.

These boots are so cool. They are definitely a "mannish" boot, sort of the shoe version of a boyfriend jean. Beautifully made, very old school. I just got them so they are pretty stiff but being that they are all leather I'm sure they will break in nicely.

These are beautiful simple boots with no frills. They do come with the antique whitish coating but it polishes off. The only kink is that the toe area runs very long. I am sure the width will stretch with break-in so no point to leaving so much toe-room.

Excellent profile, very comfortable overall. The rubber heel piece should have been incorporated throughout the entire sole in some way because the ball of your foot offers zero traction. The cheesy white-wax finish wore off quickly. Fit true to size for me. I'd say they're a tad over priced, felt more like a slightly less costly boot to me. I've used mine hard, and the inside has worn in an odd way that is somewhat uncomfortable to my heel after prolonged wear. I'm very boot picky, and I would buy these again if I lost them.

These boots are incredibly long. Size, comfort, color, and style were all great and they would have been my perfect winter boot if the boot didn't extend a full inch past my toe. I have bigger feet (9-9.5) anyway, and these looked like I was clunking around in my husband s shoes. They are very boy-ish, as other reviewers stated. Maybe more so than the picture. But I really did like them, and maybe they'd be perfect on someone with small feet.

Frye's women's James lace-up are pretty much my dream boot. The pair I received looked as though the person spraying on the wax went a little hard, but as other people have said, it comes off with just a light brushing. They also look amazing polished with a cognac cream polish. They were broken in and formed perfectly to my feet in about a week (my feet are pretty narrow). My only disappointment is with the leather sole. I wore them for about 3 weeks, daily, and have already worn through them enough for them to start taking on serious water. They are also extremely, extremely slick. I'm planning on having them resoled soon, maybe with a rubber sole. Basically, they may kill me, but I love them more than any other shoe I've ever worn.

Frye! Come on! If I am going to pay this much for some shoes, please let them be nice and polished. Not completely distressed to the point of looking like I walked through hell and back! These black boots were practically white with all your distressing chemicals. Even the soles were beat up. I ordered some great cowboy shoes from you last year, and they were so sanded and distressed, they lasted one season. Let me beat up my own shoes!

These boots totally cratered in less than a month of wear. The lacing on the soles is not indented so it wears very quickly. They are already falling apart...extremely disappointing! These are not cheap boots! What happened to Frye's credibility as being excellent boots?

I love Frye shoes. They are expensive, but well worth it. These are the type that you take out of the box and wear--no breaking in until they are comfortable. I have issues with my plantar fascia. These shoes molded to my feet and have allowed me to walk painfree.

Ordered these based on the reviews - glad I sized down by half a size. I ordered the brown hoping for the distressed and color variations seen in the pictures which were more subtle in person than I would have preferred. They are still a gorgeous boot - well made, quality leather. I own 4 pairs of Fryes and they never disappoint! Definitely recommend!

Warning: These boots run huge. I'm usually a size 6-7 in boots and I sized down to a 5.5. When I tried them on, the foot bed was so unbelievably long, I thought it was a size 7.5 or 8! Looked like I was wearing clown shoes. Size down 1-2 sizes from your usual size. Otherwise, as expected from Frye, these are excellent quality boots and I was really sad to return them.

I love everything about these shoes. They come out of the box very stiff but begin molding to your feet almost immediately. Very comfortable. Other reviewers are right about the sizing though; the shoe runs large. I wear a 9.5 in most shoes, so I first ordered a 9 in these and had to send them back for an 8.5. It's true, too, that the shoe comes with a white powdery finish that's hard to see in the picture, but it's easy to wipe off. And, yes, the soles are very smooth and slippery, but that's also easily remedied with a quick trip to the cobbler. I honestly couldn't be happier with these shoes -- or with Zappos for that matter. What amazing service!

Boot runs long. I wear a size 9 most of the time and sized down to an 8 1/2. The shoe was still a little long so I tried an 8. But the 8 was too tight even though the length fit. So I am opting for the 8 1/2 because it is way too cute to pass up.

I am really rough on my shoes, wearing the same pair everyday until they fall apart. These shoes are awesome, by far my favorite pair of everyday shoes yet. The color is beautiful and they get better as they age. I'm thinking of buying them in black so that I can wear them with literally my entire wardrobe. Best money I've spent on shoes.

This season's Go To Boots. I love these boots with rolled up jeans or tapered leg khakis. They are super comfortable and look like depression era boots, especially with the weathered brown finish. Listen to the reviews and order 1/2 size down. I normally wear 8 1/2 in Frye boots and had to return those for an 8.

I just received these today and love them so much I got on-line to order them in another color. In other manufacturers I typically wear an 8.5-9 but in Frye's I usually wear an 8. I have the Campus and Heath boots both in 8 and these in an 8 are perfect also. The leather is really thick so these will take some time to break in but it is really a high-quality, well-made shoe and it shows!

As several other reviewers have noted, these boots feel long. The lengthy toe box made my size 8.5 feet look even bigger and there was way too much space between the end of the toe box and my big toe. Half size smaller should do the trick. As for the white wax -- too much! The photo is misleading: the boots you receive will resemble a powdered doughnut.

I loved these boots so much that I let them hang out in my living room for a week, just so I could look at them. Unfortunately, I couldn't actually wear them because the toe box was way too long. I ordered a 7.5 (I'm normally either a 7.5 or an 8) and it fit fine width-wise, but the toe box made the shoes so long that they felt like clown shoes and I worried that I'd trip over the extra length. Sending these back -- they're gorgeous but too expensive for zero functionality.

This is a great boot - however- Zappos' photograph of it differs from the image on the Frye website and therefore does not show just how much white wax is on the finish. I am only talking about the ones I bought - black ones - which, out of the box, look (to me) as though they have a white mold all over. Frye told me this was intended (to look like the dusty old west) but that a shoemaker could probably remove the dusty wax and polish the boots with black to give a more shiny finish. By the way, Zappos was terrific in letting me try a second pair -- shipped immediately.
