When my Hattori's arrived I have to admit I was a bit skeptical; they seemed flimsy, the material too thin, and far too lite. Oh my word! Far, far too lite. Less than 2 1/2 oz each lite! Ok Ok down to it. 8 weeks, 200+ training miles, and 1 Triathlon later, and I am convinced, these shoes are amazing. They provide just enough sole to prevent trashing your feet during road work while retaining the feeling of a minimalist shoe. The Hattori is NOT a perfect shoe. Unfortunately it looks like the one thing that suffered in making a shoe as lite/minimal as this one is longevity. Replacing shoes this expensive every 2 to 3 months will be painful, especially when my slightly more expensive Five Fingers have held up for more than a year.

I bought these for strength training and running, and was only able to use these for one week before the straps ripped from the shoe. The overall construction quality is poor, and certainly not worth the listed price. Another pain point of the shoe was that sweat easily pools at the bottom of the shoe as there's no way for moisture to be expelled under the foot, and quickly becomes uncomfortable to wear.

First time for me with a minimalist style running, essentially a water shoe. Top of shoe is very thin, it will be interesting to see how it lasts but very breathable. Liking them so far.

This is a great running shoe. I did 7 miles my first run and it was the most comfortable first run in a new pair of shoes I have ever had. My longest run so far has been 20 miles and they still felt good. If this is your first zero drop shoe you will need to transition slowly to stretch your Achilles slowly.

I bought these looking for something as close as possible to my Five fingers that I could wear in my Physical training uniform, since the army does not allow them. These were it. They feel almost the same when I run in them. They do have a little cushion in the bottom which I appreciate every time I step on a rock. They have better grip than the 5 Fingers, too. They feel tight across the top of my feet but comfortable, and they actually weigh an ounce less than the 5 fingers. If you like the feeling or look of the separate toe pockets, but like the midfoot running style then these are for you. My only concern about these shoes is the longevity, since the sole is a kind of soft, spongy material, but that is what provides the cushion. Only time will tell. These are good shoes. When they wear out I will be buying another pair.

Just unboxed my shipment and love the styling and fit. I was worried about the fit overall since it was a minimalist shoe and I knew it had to fit just right, and it did. Fast shipping and very pleased with my order. Looks great, too. I hope the shoe's construction holds up from the usual wear and tear...time will tell.

Love them! Light, good fit, minimalist, and cheaper than a lot of other brands. I have wide feet and they aren't super easy to get on, but once they are on they literally fit like a glove.

Awesome shoe. I was a little nervous going minimalistic, but this shoe is great. As with all, it takes a couple runs to adjust your muscles, but it doesn't take long before you feel a little stronger of a runner. They are so lightweight and now I absolutely love running in them, no problems at all. Like others have said they do feel a tad smaller than my other brands of the same size, However, I felt mine stretched out just a little bit after wearing them and now fit like a glove and wouldn't order a half size bigger if/when I buy another pair of these babies. Great decision.

I'm 250lbs. Some would consider that to be a heavy runner. These things handle handle my weight just fine for running around 3-5 miles. Best running shoe I have ever had. The smoke check the VFFs.

from the thumb of Michigan--eyyy!

I totally love these shoes! I have been a competitive runner for over 10 years (I am now 40yo). Did not really believe in a minimalist shoe until I put these on. I had been having some increasing hamstring and hip discomfort over the past couple years when I ran and my times were approaching 7:30min/miles for 10ks but within a short time-2months. I ran a 7mile trail run averaging 6:24min/miles and my times continued to get better with other races! My foot has minimal arch and so these shoes feel and fit great--feels like protective sock. I never tried the five fingers because I do triathlons as well and do not want to waste transition time putting those on. I found with wearing a smart wool liner and Seal Skinz sock, I am able to wear these shoes these through the Michigan winter. The sizing is pretty true, but I ordered a couple sizes and sent back to Zappos the pair that did not work. I tried them out on a treadmill to keep them clean. Zappos is great and I will continue to shop with them as much as possible.

I love these sneakers very dearly (referring to the black aw versions specifically. I also have the original versions which I also enjoy). The aw version seem to be built a little sturdier as I have been running in them for two weeks (shorter distances due to a slight knee injury) and they have held up great. Haven't had a chance to go out in the rain though, but I have poured water on them and they seem to be completely water resistant. The only complaint I have is they should have made them a little more trail running-like on the bottoms because I expect there will be a lot of slipping and sliding on icy roads later in the winter. Definitely a strong recommendation regardless. As with the original Hattori's, go up one whole size.

Very light. There's no support at all with these shoes and exactly what I wanted, essentially like wearing tight-fitting slippers. Enough traction for dry pavement, but I don't think I'd take them on trails and I'll have to see how they handle wet surfaces. I'm concerned that the outsole won't hold up long. I have 30 miles on these, and usually get 500+ miles out of a pair of shoes. I'll have to see how far I get with these.

I'd like to comment first on the other reviews which stated that the sizing was inaccurate. I wear a size 10 shoe for casual shoes, but have always increased my running shoe size to a 10 1/2. I found that the Hattori 10 1/2 fit closer to a size 10 shoe, but it is designed to fit much tighter than a normal running shoe. In other words, if you have a 1/2 size cushion usually built-in, then your normal size will be good here. My second point is about minimalist running in general. This is the first pair of minimalist shoes I've worn, though I've been "practicing" running with a more natural mid-foot strike (in normal running shoes), for about a year, so I thought I would be ready for the Hattoris. I was wrong. It has taken me about 4 weeks to get to the point of running my usual distances. I suggest mixing in this shoe with your regular trainer over the course of several months, and foregoing the foot and calf soreness that I've experienced. Overall this is a really comfortable minimalist shoe.

I'm a 60 year old man who was told by an orthopedist to stop running 12 years ago. Long story short, I've joined the Minimalist Movement and am racking up the miles in these beauties. I'm usually a 13N - 12.5's fit like a sock, which is good.

Better than VFFs for road running. These shoes are perfect from long 8 mile runs to short speed workouts. Extremely lightweight. I love these shoes. They're a great minimalist shoe transition from Nike Free to Saucony Hattori.

A great bet for barefoot runners for longer distances. I just ran a marathon in these and they felt great. They are less of a pain to put on than the Vibrams but still offer most of the benefits. Velcro doesn't allow perfect fit, but they fit snugly enough that this shouldn't be an issue.

These shoes are great; I have had them for a couple of weeks and really like them. I have had 5 knee surgeries and have not been able to run with typical running shoes. I bought the Vibrams and like them, but they are hard for me to put on sometimes. These slip right on and are actually more comfortable than the Vibrams. So far so good. I ran a mile the other day with no problems.

I have been diagnosed with a shoe fetish and have been in love with the minimalist movement since I first discovered it about 5+ years ago. I have tried a pair of LaFumas, I am on my 4th pair of VFF's, trained with several pairs of racing flats and also own the Merrels. There is no comparing any single platformed shoe to the VFF and their ability to allow your foot to operate as intended. That said, these are ultra lightweight, comfortable (although the reinforcing "lines" that run over the toes and across the top of the foot took some getting used to), and seem to be holding up well. I have used them for everything from hills to tempos, long runs, and everything in between. The traction on wet surfaces can be horrible, and though not yet problematic, I just don't like the foot bed. The Velcro straps and stretchy material performed much better than I imagined, and they disappear once I am running. Not bad, but no VFF's either.

I wanted to try a minimalist pair of shoes that did not make me look like a hobbit. These shoes do not disappoint. The size 14 shoe is a scant 6 ounces (weighed using a digital food scale). I found them quite natural to run in and I like walking round town in them (not sure why). I have done tempo runs (7-8 mile runs) in these without any problems and without major adaptation. The material on the upper foot section are a stretchy spandex-like material that may not thrill some. I liked the material since you could comfortably run without socks and not even realize it. I have not tried other minimalist shoes, so I can't compare but overall, I can recommend these shoes.

I was a little worried about buying a true shoe to run in since I only run in FiveFingers, but I’m going to school in the mountains and need a little bit of extra coverage. That being said, these shoes truly are zero drop--they are dead flat! Look at the Nike Free or the New Balance Minimus and they aren’t zero drop, so it’s difficult to run in a barefoot style. My biggest complaint is that the rubber bits at the toe and ball of the foot cause the ground feel to be lost, so you really have to focus on your form. However, I don’t know if this is true, but I compared these and my FiveFingers, and I swear these are lighter. It’s amazing! Beware, though, these are not made for people with wide feet. The toe box is going to feel a little bit small if you have a wide foot, but it expands after a little while anyway, so it’s not that big of a deal. They’re just a little difficult to get on. Overall, these are the best minimalist running shoes I can find for the price. If you want a true minimalist running shoe, go with this one. It’s awesome!

Truly love this shoe. It's my new travel shoe. I travel a lot. Light, but with enough support for most runs. Wouldn't put it on the trails in Boulder, but for sub-6 mile street runs, it's perfect. Also to pad down to the gym in the hotel. They run snug and while I don't typically go sans socks, that seems to be the call here. It's still the honeymoon, so not sure how it will wear, but I'm going to get a back up for more casual wear. This thing is kind of a bright, stretchy miracle. p.s. Zappos is the bomb. Our company, Naked Pizza, uses their customer service as the barometer.

I have tried most of the barefoot style running shoes that are popular these days, but these are the best I have found. They have an excellent balance between minimalism and comfort. I just love the fact that there are no laces, and they are incredibly light. Certainly the best barefoot running shoes I have found in terms of comfort. I would highly recommend these to anyone wanting to join the barefoot revolution as they are an excellent transition shoe between the very minimal and something like the Nike Free shoe. Great shoe!
