This boot is one of the best. Salomon boots get the utmost respect in my household. Neither myself nor my husband has ever tried a Salomon boot that we didn't love. That is especially impressive since he and I have very different "foot types" and different pet peeves about shoes. Like many other reviewers have said, you hardly even need any break-in time in these. They feel great right away, and then last for years. My last pair went up and down the Grand Canyon three times, and on several backpacking trips and many other day hikes. The metal cleat/clamp/hook things that hold the laces near the ankle -- those are very well designed. They actually clamp the lace in place, which really does allow you to lace your lower foot area into one level of tightness, and then lace the ankle area either tighter or looser, and the two portions (foot and ankle) are isolated and can have independent tightness/compression. It works really well! Boots from other brands have little hooks on the ankle but the laces just slide through freely in either direction. Final note: i watched somebody in a store pick these up and go "oh these are way too stiff." If you get that impression, then please just put them on your feet before you make a final conclusion. They do feel stiff in the hand, but they mold to your feet so well that you will realize that you feel support and protection but not stiffness or inappropriate restriction of motion. The insoles are very cushioned, too, which gives these the opposite of a stiff feeling once you have them on.

With 30+ years of hiking and backpacking experience, these are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn - right out of the box! After waterproof application (Nikwax), they can go anywhere. I am susceptible to pronation problems and am really happy with the ankle support. Also weight to ruggedness and strength is great.

These boots did not require any break-in. I enjoyed excellent footing hiking from the summit of Haleakala down the Kaupo Gap. Others were in a hurry to take off their boots at the Paliku Cabin, but I was comfortable keeping these boots on. I had no problems walking in a narrow track through tall wet grass that others got wet from. I highly recommend these boots.

I love this boot. Unfortunately I have a very narrow heel and could not tighten enough to prevent slippage. I unhappily went with La Sportiva as a result and they really lock the heel down.

For twenty years I have bought nothing but Salomon shoes for my outdoor activities. My last pair lasted for eight years of constant use. This pair are even more durable and just as comfortable and I highly recommend them -- or any Salomon shoe to anyone. They simply are exceptional.

Brands I'd also recommend: None. Salomon is the best.

I use these 2 to 3 times a week for mountain hiking - 5 miles with a 1100' gain in elevation. On the return going mostly downhill is where these boots really shine. My old feet are usually pretty sore by then but not any more. Regarding the long laces? I lace and tie at all 3 "junctions" with a triple knot at the top. They are actually the perfect size if done like this. I recommend adding the 3rd knot on top to keep the loops from being too large and snaring a passing branch.

Great boots. I wore these in 0-30F degree weather with between 5-13 inches of snow and enjoyed warm and dry feet throughout. They also grip well on many types of terrain.

I finally had to replace my 2006 Oakley hikers. I shopped and researched and after several weeks of browsing around, I decided to purchase my first pair or Salomon hikers. I have had them for 4 months and thus far, they are excellent. They fit very comfortably, look stylish, and absolutely love the grip of the sole. I ride a Harley and this sole is exactly what I was looking for without purchasing another uncomfortable biker boot. The inside of the tongue is also comfortable, something I find difficult with most hiker boots. I highly recommend this boot and will purchase a second pair of Solomon soon.

This pair of boots was very comfortable right out of the box. I'd ordered a couple to try out and ended up keeping the slightly taller Salomon Quest 4D GTX boots but only because I wanted a more muted color. These little fellas felt great on my feet.

This is my 5th Salomon pair. What I love the most is the light weight and the quality of the material. I still have all 5 pairs as they are all for different weather conditions.

In my seemingly never ending quest for hiking boots, the Comet 3D came darn close to being the one. At one point in my search I remember looking at my ever-comfortable Mizuno running shoes and thinking Why can they not make hiking boots that fit like this? In fact, they do and the Comet 3D must be one of the best examples. I love the way they hug the instep and open up in the toe box, leaving plenty of room for toe spread. The construction seems good. The plastic lace loops are a little odd on such expensive boots, but if Salomon stands behind it for two years, I guess it is OK by me. The sole stiffness is perfect for light to medium backpacking and the boots are easily comfortable enough for day hiking as well. The insole is actually decent compared to other brands that offer almost no support and padding (Lowa, Asolo for example) and basically expect you to pay some more for a third party insole. Similarly, unlike so many hard-backed backpacking boots the rear of the heel area is flexible and padded, making it a decent option for people like me who have bony heel protrusions called Haglunds. Initially I experienced some very minor heel slip but this was basically alleviated by adding a liner sock beneath my light to medium weight Merino wool socks. The real killer was that the boots were too narrow in the mid-foot area. In the store and at home I thought it was just snug, but after taking it out for a serious walk the outside edges of my feet ached for days. I really don t think this is something that breaks in - it seems built into the midsole frame. To test this issue I recommend taking out the insole and placing your foot into the boot. If the outside edge of your foot feels cramped without lacing up, that is a clue that the boot is too narrow for your foot. I had the same issue with the Quest 4D, which I otherwise loved. I am seriously bummed as this boot seemed otherwise to fit really well and gave me no perceptible heel issues.

Brands I'd also recommend: Scarpa, Lowa, Hanwag, Asolo, Mammut

I've been wearing these for about a month now and they are quite comfortable, and they fit great. I've yet the hit the trail with them due to bad weather but I'd imagine they will perform just fine. The only reason I rate them at 4 stars is because I've not tried them backpacking yet.

My boyfriend is an avid hiker and outdoorsman, and he typically wears out a good pair of ($200+) waterproof hiking boots in a year's time. He decided he was ready to try a pair of Salomon to replace his beloved Danner and Meindl boots. The Salomon boots showed up quickly and in excellent condition (as always, thanks Zappos!) and he was eager to try them out. He took a short 1-hour walk around the farm on a rainy day, and upon his return to the house he discovered that his socks were soaked in the toes, and the outer material of this hiker had actually ABSORBED the moisture rather than repelling it, as any waterproof boot would normally do! If you get your nerve up to try the Salomon, keep in mind that if you're going for the waterproof feature, it's an absolute FAILURE for the money, and you will spend your money better on a Danner or Meindl product (these have withstood 2+ years of daily hard use). On the upside, these fit perfectly like a sneaker, straight out of the box. Since there isn't a way to return these after the wear and tear the boots have taken, they'll be kept for dry day use only! Good luck!

MY SALOMONS FELL APART EIGHT MILES INTO YELLOWSTONE. Do you see that grey material along the top of the sole? It disintegrated. The sole then separated from the boot. Yes, the shoes were out of warranty. So, they are great for one hike, but you never know when they are going to quit on you. The same thing happened to my son's boots that were not quite three years old. Salomon had no appologie due to age of both pair.

My 7 D foot felt pinched on the sides with just a thin cotton sock on. The shoe itself seems to be well made. I'm trading them in for a slightly larger pair of Salomon 4D GTX and hope they'll fit. I had better luck with the leather Vasque and the Montrails Stratos XR's.
