Let's get one thing out of the way. I murder shoes. I am a photographer and have unrealistic expectations of what my shoes should be able to do. This shoe meets and exceeds those expectations. I just ordered another pair of these shoes to replace my 14 month old pair that are finally showing signs of wear. In the last 14 months, I've worn these shoes in every possible atmosphere: Snow, sleet, rain, freezing temps, 100 degree plus temps. I've worn them in forest fires, house fires, and at accident scenes where they've kept their traction in oil, foam, transmission fluid and the like. They feel great on my foot, they really take abuse and they don't show it. These replaced my Merrell Interceptors, a shoe that might be a bit better looking but has a much softer sole that didn't hold up to my abuse. My only complaint is that these aren't waterproof. I replaced them with the GoreTex version today and don't expect to buy another pair of shoes till March 2013. In short, there is nothing you can do, short of leaving them on fire, that will damage them. I highly recommend them. Once I determine how waterproof the GoreTex version is, I might swap my preference to that, but so far, these are the best shoes I've ever owned.

I really wanted to like these shoes because I like Patagonia and I like the way they look. However, after wearing them for a week, I am thoroughly disappointed. My biggest complaint is that my feet do not feel secure in them. The inside lining is too slippery so my feet move too much. No, the shoes were not too big for me. I even cinched down the laces to the point where they started to cut off circulation but my feet still moved too much. Did they spray the inside with Teflon?? Definitely not something I want to wear doing any type of technical hiking or scrambling over rocks. My other complaint is that the laces are made of slippery round nylon that don't like to stay tied so I have to either double knot them or constantly stop to retie them. Granted, you could just get new laces, but you shouldn't have to when paying a premium price for the Patagonia brand. Overall, I'm disappointed in these shoes.

I own many items of Patagonia clothing however these are the first pair of shoes. I found them to be extremely comfortable, solid hiking shoes. They would also make ideal everyday shoes for people who spend alot of time on their feet. Another quality product from Patagonia.

I wore these for several weekend trips climbing and laying out trails on steep, rocky hillsides. After the weekends of hillside work were over, I started using them for trail running on the rocky trails in Austin. They excel at that too. They are light enough for running, yet they're almost overkill for protecting my feet from the sharp-edged limestone. I don't feel the sharp rocks through the sole at all. I've even used them with platform pedals mountain biking when I knew there would be a lot of carrying the bike over ledges and such. These shoes hold my feet firmly so I don't slide around inside them. And the sole provides amazing traction on rocky surfaces and loose dirt. I've worn them on several full days out when the temperature was over 100 degrees and they didn't feel overly hot, considering the conditions. They feel like supportive hiking boots, but with low tops. They ride firm. They don't have a cushy sole like a running shoe. They are so much better than my last pair of hiking boots and my last pair of trail runners. Getting all that in one shoe is remarkable. I'm on here to buy another pair in a different color now.

These shoes are the most comfortable all purpose shoes I have worn in a while. The price is high, but they are quality. My only issue is I wish they were made in the USA. Even Patagonia has now increased their profit margin by manufacturing over seas and I think its sad. I would gladly pay more for American, but think it is lame when I have to pay more for shoes made in China.

Great shoe overall. Fairly lightweight for having such an aggressive sole. The color in real life is more of a deep blue-gray than the lighter green-blue shown here. Sizing is nice and snug at the heel and a wide toe box. Lots of volume top-to-bottom, though, so I find myself really cinching up the laces to have a snug fit.

Contrary to other reviews, I found this shoe runs small; it's very tight in the toe area.

I bought the men's size 7.5, although I am a woman -- due to my very wide feet (I wear about 8.5-9 in women's...if they are not too narrow). The men's 7.5 fits me perfectly. As other reviewers have noted, the shoes are wonderfully comfortable right out of the box, with no need to break them in. My own use for them is for regular walks (2-4 miles) around town on cement sidewalks as well as the odd hike on paths. I have heard from very well-informed & quasi-professional outsider types that Patagonias are sturdy and generally wear very well. So far, I am completely delighted. Also, I find the forge-grey color, available in men's, far preferable to the noxious pinkish color of the single option offered to women. My only suggestion for improvement: would be nice to have a wee bit of reflective material somewhere in the design.

Very comfortable and supportive, right out of the box. Little "break in" time required. Heel stability is great without being too restricting. Sole is sure-footed and stable. I've replaced the original insoles with Soft Sole Hike High Performance insoles and not quite as good as Superfeet insoles, but Soft Soles do provide greater cushioning than the original Patagonia insoles for much less than Superfeet!

I bought these shoes for a trip around the Grand Canyons and I am completely satisfied with the purchase. The feature that stands out the most is the amount of grip these shoes have. I was able to climb up many rock surfaces that my friends were slipping on. I felt more confident, safe and secure wearing these shoes for hiking. The excellent ventilation is another thing I noticed. I could actually feel air flowing into the shoes whenever a strong gust of wind blew by. My only gripe is that the shoe laces were untying themselves, but it's a minor issue and solved simply by double knotting. Overall, I give this 5 out of 5.

Amazingly comfortable out of box. I expected a hefty break-in process like many of my previous hiking shoes, but immediately assimilated well with my foot. Great support - feels very stable and extremely durable, but still light enough to forget they are there. These are the best light hiking shoes I have ever owned. Highly recommended.

I wore these to the office on casual days to attempt to break them in, no need. They're extremely comfortable and didn't chafe the back of my heels like so many other hiking shoes I've owned in the past. Love 'em.

This shoe feels good on my feet right out of the box. The heel feels a little slippy at first. You really notice the lugs on the sole but they aren't uncomfortable. Have not been in the field yet so I won't comment on that. I would buy these again.

Bought these for my vegetarian son! He loves them! They're comfortable (amazing for a vegan shoe) and they are virtually the only boot he has worn in this snowy winter. Of course the Zappos service was terrific. We have the VIP account: I think they arrived at his school in less than 24 hours!

I am a long time merrell customer and I still wear their shoes, but I bought these for work and they have been great. I typically wear a 9.5 and the 9.5 in these fits me perfect. They have great support and are super sturdy. I am very happy with these shoes. If you like merrells, then you will most likely like these as well. Great product!

This is my first pair of Patagonia shoes and I'm sold! The most comfortable shoe I've worn in years. I love my Keens but these Drifters are tops. Excellent arch support, very comfortable fit. They felt slightly small but fine. Highly recommended for casual wear and the trails. Haven't had them long enough to gauge wear.

Got these for my son for Christmas recommended by Outside magazine. He loved them right out of the box, no break in period, and has been hiking and mountain biking in them since. The service with Zappos is superior, made shopping at the last minute with excellent selection possible! Love them! Got a size larger to wear with heavier socks and give room to move.
