This jacket is very well done for what it is- a functional around town rain jacket/insulation layer. In some of the reviews knocking the quality, I can't help but think the people writing them are shortsighted. Here's why: 1) Patagonia stands by there product really well. There customer service is second only to Zappos. They have a great return or exchange policy, even without receipt. Go ahead test it. They've repaired jackets for me for free that I rightfully should have paid to get repaired (fire, knives through sleeves, you know- not manufacturing defects). 2) Patagonia makes consistently high quality gear. I've been using it, in ocean spray (salt water destroys stuff pretty well), for 10 years as a professional. I own more Patagonia than any other brand for one reason- it works and it lasts. 3) The jacket is clearly not designed to be heavy duty on insulation, but the insulation is incredibly warm for it's weight. In other words, it's not cheap and thin. It's expensive and thin. And if you ever want to packed this jacket to take it somewhere (which is why I am buying it), taking up less space in the suitcase without losing warmth is a pretty big advantage. That's why outdoor folks love hi-loft down. To sum up: great jacket for it's design. The outer shell is a fully waterproof fabric, rather than a fabric treated with water repellant (like the Venn). The insulation is a more highly breathable than synthetic (that means wind will get through it alone, but not with the outer shell on), creating a highly versatile jacket to cover a very wide range of conditions, especially if you're willing to pack a sweater. My only critique- I'd prefer a less obvious Patagonia logo on the outer shell (like the one on the Venn)- so I'll get a stitch cutter and take that off.

The bottom slider won't bring the stop together about half of the time. It is very difficult to use and completely unacceptable on a an expensive jacket. Otherwise, it is very warm and windproof. It is also lightweight, compared to other jackets I have had that are this warm. The XXL runs long compared to others.

Worth the cost! I walked around NYC during the Christmas season toasty. Nice neutral color also, and I'm sure I will have this amazing jacket 10 years from now.

It looks great and has a comfortable trim, but not suffocating cut to it. I wanted a parka that would function as an everyday overcoat for Chicago's winter; something that will keep me warm to walk to the train and wear to the office, even over a suit coat if the day demanded it. I like the look of the Tres: the hood is detachable, there aren't an obnoxious amount of pockets/logos/zippers all over the surface, and it came in a simple black. The chief drawback is that this is, at best, a two-season fall/spring coat if you live somewhere with a real winter. Other reviews are correct that it's not good in the cold. The down liner is tissue paper thin and offers very little insulation once the temperature gets below the mid-twenties. To solve this, I wound up buying a 300-weight fleece to zip-in instead. I'd love to say that Patagonia had a range of compatible products to serve as liner upgrades, but no, this 3-in-one is an island in their product line. In fact none of their down or fleece jackets have zip-in compatible sleeve stays loops. So, I found a great deal on a North Face Denali that works (thanks YKK zippers!). It doesn't add any extra bulk, and it might even be too warm at around freezing. Maybe a 250-weight would be better, but I got a great deal on the Denali. The Tres is much improved now.

I'd also recommend: Marmot

Essential traveling jacket. Great for fall and chilly winter season. Looks good and is easily packed or carried on a plane.
