Let me first start by saying this: Zappos has the most AMAZING customer service that I have ever experienced from any company. Okay, now the boots... I have been searching for almost a year for the perfect Frye boots. I have never owned a pair before and I am extremely picky when it comes to shoes, especially boots. I have tried several other styles in Frye and discovered that sizing runs different in most styles. I wear an 8.5 or 9 in other brands and mostly wear an 8.5 in Frye. However, the Carson I wear an 8, the Harness I wear a 7.5... I originally ordered an 8.5 in these boots in the black. They did feel a little tight in the toes and loose in the heel, but I knew they would stretch and mold to my feet with time. The black for me was just TOO dark and somewhat masculine looking. I decided to exchange them for the dark brown leather in the same size. The dark brown leather is absolutely gorgeous! I love that the sole and heel are a nice contrasting lighter brown and will look even better with wear. They are a very beautiful dark chocolate brown and will go just fine with black and any other color items. HOWEVER, for some reason the brown felt snugger in the toes, so much so that I was afraid that they are just too small. I understand the confusion with sizing with these boots because they are narrow in the toes and slip in the heel. I did some research and discovered that they will actually stop slipping in the heel with wear. Sooo... I am now waiting on my size 9 to arrive. I will probably end up keeping these so I will be able to wear medium weight socks in the colder weather. I think many reviews here claim the boots are uncomfortable because the sizing is somewhat confusing and they probably did not have the correct size. For me (unless you have a narrow foot) they run true to size. I would not recommend going down a half size in this particular style of Frye because they are so narrow in the toe area. I highly recommend this style! I put off getting them for a long time because they are so expensive, but I am sooo GLAD I finally bit the bullet and got them! They are so classy, go with everything and will last so many, many years. Also, they fit really well in the calf with a little extra room for jeans to be tucked in. I am 5'4” and they come right up to the bottom of my knee, which I love. Get these! You won't regret it!

Beautiful!. Leather is so soft. I'm 6' tall and this size 11 boot hits my kneecap, 19 inches tall from floor. I have a high instep but not a problem in getting my foot in. There is heel slippage when I walk - not sure how to fix that. They might be going back. :(

This is a gorgeous boot and it looks and feels every bit the cost (and more)! I read all the reviews and was concerned about heel slip. I first ordered a half size up and was swimming, then ordered true to size. I've had the toe of the boot stretched twice and have gotten blisters from the heel slip BUT after wearing them over continually longer periods of time I've finally hit the point where I know they're going to be amazingly comfortable. It's worth the break-in!

Very pretty boots that come to my mid knees. Only problem, for me, is that the calves are pretty roomy. I would prefer the boots to not be so large around the calf area.

These boots are huge! I just got them in the mail and was pretty disappointed when I tried them on. They absolutely swallowed my legs and looked ridiculous. The shaft is very wide and the ankles are extremely wide (to the point where they look like cankles). I normally wear 7 1/2-8, but ordered these in 7 1/2. They run a bit large in size and are built for I think a bigger person overall (I'm 5'6 and not super skinny). The quality is very high, but they look a little more home-on-the-range than I had hoped. I still gave 5 stars for quality and the dark brown is a lovely shade. In the picture they look classic and refined... in person, they are more country casual. Sending them back.... the search continues. :(

    About Frye

    of New Styles!

Notify me when new styles of Frye are added to the website

Add This Brand to My Favorites
The Frye Company was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a shoemaker from England. Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers for both sides of America’s Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-America war, and for Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Many New England families during the mid and late 1800’s wore Frye boots as they pioneered across the country to the West.

Frye's current Harness Boots are rooted in tradition and continue to draw influence from the Cavalry. Today the classic Harness Boot holds a place in American culture. The Frye Harness Boot has been pictured in fashion spreads internationally. In 1938, on a trip to Washington, D.C., John A. Frye's grandson and namesake met a U.S. Navy Admiral who confided that he had trouble finding the Wellington boots he liked so much. As a favor, John agreed to make him a pair. Frye continued to fill requests for these boots through the Second World War. During World War II, Frye supplied thousands of servicemen with Frye Wellington boots, known as Jet Boots, by mail order.

In the 1960's, Frye reintroduced the Campus Boot, from its 1860 original, featuring a bulky toe and chunky heel that came to epitomize the attitude and the style of the 60's and 70's. There was nothing like these "new" Frye Boots on the market, and consumers began to demand "Original Fryes." When searching for items to represent the America of the 60's, the Smithsonian Institute chose a pair of Frye Boots.

The quality of all Frye shoes is timeless. For almost 150 years, Frye leather products have continued to be benchcrafted from the finest full grain leather uppers. It takes over 190 steps to make one pair of Frye boots. Frye remains dedicated to the commitment of craftsmanship for which Frye boots and Frye shoes have been known for more than 100 years.

I loved these boots. I bought them in the textured bordeaux color and they are beautiful. I am on the short side (5'2") and they do come up a little high but the beautiful thing about these boots is that you can scrunch them slightly by the ankle and they look beautiful on. That gives them a little more of a casual look. These are definitely a staple for any wardrobe. The quality is great and I expect to have them for years.

After reading all the nearly 100 reviews of this baby (a few times) I decided to take the plunge. Justifying the money spent on the fact that I will wear these forever and ever. So I just got them, and yes unfortunately, they're worth every cent. Maybe I'm just high right now on the scent of new leather, but these boots are simply perfect, looks-wise. The leather looks like the most high quality leather and they're extremely versatile - whether you want a structured boot or a slightly slouchy look - these babies fit the bill. I wanted a knee-high boot, but these come up to an inch and a half below my knee (I'm almost 5'7"), but that's okay; they still look elegant and tall. With regard to the roomy heel area - yep, it's too roomy initially, but as other lovely ladies have said here, that problem should go away after they've been worn in. Plus Frye says, it's not a Frye boot until 190 steps. It is a little narrow in the toe area, but not very uncomfortable. Nothing that time won't fix. Plus you can also take it to get it stretched. I love the fact that it has functional adjustable straps because I have average-thin calves and this was too roomy for me but was fine after adjustment. I don't recommend these for someone with skinny calves. Overall, a gorgeous investment which will pay dividends many years to come!

These are nicer look than I expected. There was a little heel slippage first day I wore them, but by the third wearing they were super comfortable. I got the taupe and it will be a nice lighter color for spring. I expect these to last forever.

I have been wanting these boots for years and finally bought them this winter. They definitely lived up to my expectations. I find that Frye is true to size and relatively comfortable. These boots are a bit stiffer than other Frye boots I've had but have been fairly easy to break in by just wearing around the house.

Love these shoes...and I am one picky shoe shopper! Beautiful color contrast on the dark brown, nice long shaft for the long legged women (yes)...do not want to take them off! I do agree with the heel slippage but am hoping with a little wear and a little thicker socks, I'll be just fine! Again, I love these boots!

These boots are gorgeous. I thought that the leather would be a little thicker for the price, however. I am an equestrian, though, and my standards are quite high when it comes to leather. Of course, these would never be appropriate on a horse, and that isn't what I bought them for. So--as a fashionable, wearable boot--yes.

Amazing boot. Runs true to.size. yes good boots take wearing in. Not wide and sloppy. Yrs narrow but not too bad.have them stretched. You will have these for a lifetime. Gorgeous. I got them in textured Bordeaux; textured spice and black. Nice calf not too big looking. I have large calves and am not tall only 5 ft 5 and these boots came to my knee and looked beautiful not overwhelming at all. These are the perfect boot. Looks best with leggings. You will not be disappointed. Narrow foot but i have a bunion on one foot and if you order your size you will be fine. And if you have issues have them stretched no biggie. Worth the money no comparison to other brands. Fryes fit better with more wear in time as all great boots.

Ordered these riding boots in charcoal after my husband spotted them at Bloomie's, where they were sold out! The boots are incredibly well made and attractive -- sleek enough to wear with skirts or jeans. They do *not* have a Western look but they do have a Western fit (i.e., stiff leather sole, the wearer's heel may lift up with each step). The calf circumference fits my 15 1/4 calf snugly but not too tight. I wear 8 to 8.5 -- ordered these in 8.5 and they fit perfectly. Will need to stretch a bit with thick socks for my wide feet. These should be perfect for medium width feet.

Brands I'd also recommend: Donald J Pliner, Kate Spade

These boots are absolutely delicious! They are very well constructed, made of really nice leather and the style is classic. The heels do slip as the other reviewers have mentioned. I have a small calf and thought I would be able to adjust the top strap to fit but they were huge on my legs. I love the look and feel of this boot but I'm forced to go to as equestrian site so that I can customize the shaft size and height. So sorry they didn't work out!

Frye boots are very high quality, and this pair is no exception. The brown color is gorgeous. The toe is narrow, but that, along with the cute buckles, adds an extra feminine touch to these boots. They are a little tall for someone like me who is 5'3" - but still, I really like them and am very happy with them. They are a little more expensive, but Fryes are classic and last a long time. Fryes always run a little big. I wear a 7½ in most shoes and purchased a 7 in these.

I bought these and a Cole Haan boot because I wasn't sure which one I would like. I read the reviews that said you slip out of this boot until it is worn in. I also was concerned that it would be too wide around the calf. I have very thin calves. The boot is fabulous. The quality of the leather is excellent. They are really elegant. You really do stop slipping out after a few wearings. The calf is a little big but looks perfectly fine with jeans tucked in. I think these boots will last for years. No comparison (in my view) to the Cole Haan boot. Definitely worth the investment.
