Perfect Replacement - This pair of shoes was purchased to replace my husband's many-years-old Vasque shoes that he wears to work around the house and yard. He slipped the new shoes on and it was as if his old ones were made new again. They were comfortable right from the start.

When I picked up the unopened box after receiving these boots I honestly thought there were weights in the box. These boots are surprisingly heavy. I doubt that there posted weight of 3 pounds is correct. They seem more like 4 or 5 pounds per boot... In addition they were so stiff (like solid plastic) that I figured I would have to wear them nonstop for a month straight just to get them even remotely comfortable. Along with there “plastic like stiffness they are a full size too big along with a ½ size too wide (I’m an exact size US mens 11 ½ with normal width and I ordered an 11 ½ ...). Aside from the heavy weight, stiffness and “over size, they were not comfortable on the soles of my feet and they walked terribly... I am very surprised that the other reviewers here haven’t noted any of the same complaints as myself seeing as it took me all of 10 minutes to notice the very obvious flaws and put them back in their box to be returned... Granted seemingly all new hiking boots are a bit stiff and not light as a feather but this boot is ridiculous... Very disappointed with Vasque. The hype that surrounds this company boggles my mind after this experience.
Brands I'd also recommend: If U like this boot then try big ski boots...

Vasque GorTex - my favorite! I am a firm believer in Vasque boots. I buy new Vasques about every 2 years. I wear my boots every day. They last my about 5 or 6 years total. The GoreTex keeps my feet dry, the outer leather wears very well, and they breathe well too. After they are broken in, these boots are worth every penny!

Great Boots - This is my 5th pair of Vasque boots, the third pair of Clarion GTX. All are of supurb quality. These boots give me the support that I need. I have some major orthopedic problems with an ankle; wearing these boots allows me to walk more than I could dream of in lesser shoes. The break-in period was short and the boots are now very comfortable. My only negative comment is that these newer style boots are not as beloved as my older Vasques. I still wear a pair of Cascades that I bought 26 years ago. These newer style boots will never last that long. But they do a better job while they last.
Brands I'd also recommend: Nothing compares

Vasque Clarion GTX - I have a wide foot and struggled to find a backpacking boot that was a good fit. Even higher priced Vasque boots in wide widths did not fit as good as this one. The toe box is very roomy. I have over 400 miles on this boot carrying a 40-50 pound pack and no blisters.

Finally a wide hiking boot - My son has wide feet and needed a good boot to hike in the mountains. We tried several styles and sizes of Vasque and these had the best fit.

I use this shoe for construction work - Just bought my 4th pair over about 6 years. I wear them every work day year round. These are the best shoes I have ever owned for all around comfort. I also use the shoe for hunting. I always keep a pair bought ahead in case they stop making this style.

Will Most certainly buy again - I've finally worn out a pair of these. They were my everyday shoes as well as my hiking shoes. The tread is now gone, but hell, they're eight years old! These have been by far the best hiking boot I have ever worn. Yes, they are stiff as boards when you first get them, but they break in fast (1 hike for me) and don't leave blisters. The ankle support the boots provide is the best I've ever encountered. I would strongly recommend these boots. I'm going to take my pair on the Rock Jock Trail in the Liville Gorge tomorrow and then retire them as hiking boots. My next pair will become my hiking boots and my old pair will become my everyday shoe. I tortured these boots for years and they took it. I'm actually trying to see if I can get them re-tread. They're great for grip and ankle support during rough water deep-sea fishing too. Mine have been the best boots I've ever owned. I'm hoping Vasque hasn't changed anything in the last eight years because I'm buying another pair this week. Give them more than 10 minutes walking around the house and break them in. You won't regret it.
Brands I'd also recommend: None, this boot rocks!

3rd pair & still my favorite - This is my 3rd pair of this boot in 10 years. This time I was worried when I went to my local outdoor shop and was told they discontinued Vasque because Vasque was 'bought out' and their quality and sizing had gone downhill. I searched a few more outdoor shops and all told the same story. Then, a friend told me of Zappos. If Vasque had changed for the worse, Zappos would take them back for up to a year! Well, I'm happy to say that whether Vasque was bought out or not, these are still the same old great Vasque boots in virtually every way. One small difference is that this boot now seems to only come with Gore-Tex and my last two pair did not. I was a bit worried about the Gore-Tex being too hot on summer desert hikes, but so far the boots feel just as cool as my last two pair without Gore-Tex, plus I stay a little drier in light slushy snow. I'm very pleased!

Didn't live up to hype - Ordered 11.5 med, but they felt like 12. They also felt wide and I just couldn't get them tight enough on my foot. My feet felt like they were swimming in them. I think the problem is the variable fit technology they have. It's a kind of one-size fits all width thing that just didn't work for my foot.

Ventur Leader Dave From Illinois - I have had these boots for 7 seasons and finally retired them last summer after my last trip to Isle Royal Michigan. Before that was Philmont Scout Ranch New Mexico. With age they seem to stretch in size but still comfortable. I plan to have this pair resoled and new insoles for comfort. Initial service very good break in with no blisters until the insole wore out. Outer shoe starting to crack but still water proof. My current pair are Vasque Breeze GTX XCR and have had the same good experience while hiking in the SW desert of New Mexico Double H Philmont Scout Reservation.

Why'd they change the design? Have a pair of Clarion GTX - best boots by far I've ever had. Always fit - new and well-used - and broke in very quickly. Great ankle support, nice rigid sole for clambering over big rocks, etc. However... my pair has a Gore-Tex insert over the top of the toes, and a rubber shield over the end of the toe which really takes the abuse and doesn't get marked up. The new design has a solid leather toe and no rubber shield over the toe. The only bad thing was that they tend to get a little slippery on wet tree roots and rocks (as I found out in New Zealand) - I understand that has to do with the compound the sole is molded from. Has anyone had both pairs, and did you find the new ones less breathable and more prone to scuff damage on the toe? How about the compound on the tread - has that changed?

Great boots! I am an over 300 lb Land Surveyor. Daily, I have been wearing the shoe marketed as "Vasque Clarion GTX" since 1991, when I complained to my regular shoe supplier (mom and pop shoe store that I have been buying shoes from for over 50 years), that I really wasn't being served well with leather boots and rubber overshoes for wet conditions. I have lost count of the number of pairs of these boots I have owned, but with daily use in conditions ranging from sitting at a desk in my office, to walking on concrete and asphalt surfaces, to mud, to sand, to lawns, to some of the more rugged back-country in the Midwest, the 12-24 months of service I get from these boots is noteworthy. Especially considering my size and the additional 20 or more lbs of equipment I often carry. Regarding the soles: Concrete is probably the worst surface to walk on due to its abrasiveness. Asking boots to work well in all conditions is unrealistic. This week, working in an area with an AVERAGE grade of 14%, including some near vertical areas, I found that the boot would hold me on the side slopes, better than the soil on which I placed them. Keep on making them!
