For a long time, I've been needing a comfortable pair of
walking shoes that can tolerate long days of urban exploration but can transition to going indoors to a nice restaurant or bar. Nothing makes me feel frumpier in New York City -- or any city -- than white
sneakers. I have wide, flat feet, Achilles issues, and bunions (is there a word that goes beyond "trifecta" to include four things that make shoe buying a pain?), so my podiatrist suggested
clogs. I'd been avoiding making a purchase for a while because good
clogs are expensive. However, these are worth every penny. The size 40, on me (a true size 8.5 who often goes up to 9 or 9.5 due to width) can accommodate up to a medium thickness sock (e.g., Smart Wool), stay on my feet snugly, and offer amazing
arch support. I recently wore them for several long days of walking around New York in winter, and they even kept my feet warm in 30 degree temps, though I can't say they're recommended for snow. The blue/gray color looks great with
jeans, extending the leg, which is an added bonus for a short girl like me. (I also didn't want something heavy and dark like black or brown.) I have only two criticisms of this shoe: the top part rubs against the top of my foot a bit at times (but is a discomfort that I am soon able to ignore), and they're not great shoes for long flights. While they're a dream when going through security checkpoints, they are still pretty thick leather, which means that if you leave them on your feet during a flight and your feet swell, you're going to feel it. They're less forgiving than
sneakers in that regard. (And forget about removing them altogether during the flight; you'll never get them back on.) A smart traveler would pack a pair of light
socks to change into for the flight in order to leave a little extra space. Overall, I like these shoes a lot. They address several problems at once, and I got compliments on them from a few people, who said "Now I want
clogs!" and "Those look just like
boots!" They really are pretty funky, and I feel European wearing them. I will probably get them in a second color since my feet are so picky and I need to hoard the few shoe models that actually work for me.
