Great shoe. I have 100+ miles in them and they have been comfortable, light, nimble and keep me fresh on the trails. Only used in training but have 3 ultras over the next several months that will give them the next level test. Best tongue and laces I've had. I also run in New Balance Leadville 100's but find the pearls to be more comfortable on the long runs.

I've had 7-8 pairs of pearls in the last 4 years. These offer, by far, the most stability. They are light but have nearly the support of a cross trainer. The lacing system is great and the new insole is better than ortholite because the heel portion is higher. Make sure you understand your pronation before buying the N2.

I've used these every weekend on training runs (all of 20+ miles) on trails in variable conditions and they've held up great. Would definitely purchase again (and I intend to when my current pair have had it).

I'd also recommend: Pearl Izumi, Salomon, Montrail

I'm a high-mileage runner focused on mountain/trail ultras, and I'm also now happily on my fourth consecutive pair of these shoes. After moving incrementally toward less and less shoe with another brand, I went too minimal and my feet were feeling pretty beat up on rocky technical trails and races longer than 50k. I then shifted toward a bit more shoe that would be forgiving on my body in the late miles of an ultra when my form degrades. The Pearl Izumi Em Trail N2 had pretty much everything I was looking for: relatively light, sufficient cushioning for ultras, moderate heel-toe drop, a wider forefoot that accommodates my foot comfortably, and neutral support (no major arch or posting). I wore a single pair of these shoes continuously for a 100k ultra with 41k feet of total elevation change and had nary a black toenail or blister. My only critique is that the sole tread doesn't handle very muddy conditions well and the sole material doesn't have great traction on wet rocks and wet tree roots, but that's a known sacrifice when you trade a stickier sole for a more durable one like this shoe has.

One of the best shoes in terms of comfort. I took them out on the trail and had very little problems. Unfortunately, 2 weeks in, and less then 15 miles of wear, the plastic strip they used to glue-weld the "seamless upper" (on the inside of the shoe) started to unglue (on both pairs). I'm very happy that Zappos and their great support. I don't know if I'm willing to give another pair of Pearl Izumis a shot, I expected this shoe to last longer.

I'd also recommend: Merrell
