First, the customer service I received on this shoe from Zappos was beyond their normal level of awesome. Hats off to them for fixing an order mix up and hitting back to back next day deliveries free. Pearl Izumi has become my favorite line of shoes. I'm a trail runner averaging about 20-25 miles weekly with the intent of increasing to marathon levels in the next 4-5 months. This shoe is currently perfect for my long distance trail runs of about 8-10 miles. The fit is near perfect, it's light, and the ride is exceptionally smooth. I'm a flat footed fore-mid foot striker and this shoe makes my stride feel incredibly efficient. Even with an ongoing achilles tendonopathy issue-- the 1mm drop leaves my tendon feeling like new while all of my other low drop shoes leave me with about 2 days recovery for pain and stiffness. It must be something in Pearl Izumi's dynamic offset design that contributes to a run that is much easier on the body. The sole is a perfect compromise between cushioning and firmness. Day one in the shoe felt a little stiff, but it has since broken in very nicely. No hotspots whatsoever. There are a few very minor downsides to this shoe which I can live with but are worth mentioning: First, the shoe is not odor resistant. The last two trails I've hit involved either crossing through streams or splashing through puddles. Even after a thorough rinse-off, there is definitely some pond-like funk that remains. Second, the color schemes available on Zappos are not to my liking. Subjective, sure, but PI offers other color combinations that I would love to see carried by Zappos. Last, I had one post-rain trail outing where I picked up way too much mud (as in pounds per foot), and no amount of grass skiing or stomping was effective in its removal. I was going through heavy clay puddles so it was to be expected-- but there was no degree of self cleaning in the lug system. It cut my run short. Granted, I didn't have this experience in a more recent wet run, so it could have been the clay that was previously encountered on the trail. Overall, this is a brilliantly designed shoe that is worth trying if you are a trail runner. The N1 along with the racing N0 have made me a Pearl Izumi convert. Will likely pick up a few more pairs as they are marked down for the release of the 2015 versions.

I'd also recommend: Brooks, Altra

Another great shoe from PI. Very comfortable right out of the box. Love the toe bumper on the front. Tread isn't too aggressive and is fine for running on the road as well. You will feel some rocks when running on the trail, but not to the point where it is uncomfortable. Love this shoe.

Went to a serious roadrunners-type store as I needed decent sneaks for arch support, comfort for a job. So paid quite a bit for a pair of recommended Pearl Izumis - cool looking. Took a bit of time to break in, but have lasted since 05-06. They are supposed to run 1/2 size smaller than normal size - right against big toe, then stretch. A running thing I guess. Stiff too, but quality. Tried on above recently - after buying cheaper other brand - and similar experience, so will return others, get these. I rarely plug stuff, but if looking for a shoe that is a bit funky looking, but offers great support for long days on your feet, give 'em a try.

I'd also recommend: Asics- just don't last as long; Mizuno; Brooks (hard core runner shoe)

Hard to find reviews on this shoe so here's my experience. I researched the perfect trail shoe high and low. I came up with the PI Em Trail N1: lightweight, good traction, rock plate, cool design. They run a half-size small for me. I took them on a 16-mile trail run today and they were great. I didn't tie my right foot tight enough and developed a blister on my big toe, but that was my own doing. Great feel, wash easily with the mesh upper. All around pretty happy that I went with this shoe. The bulky mid-sole promotes a mid-foot strike and your stride just rolls. Downhill I felt like I was running on pillows.

This has the makings of a great trail shoe. They were very comfortable out of the box and look great, excellent traction in varied terrain, and lightweight. My only complaint is a single design flaw. Presumably to save weight, PI uses a soft foam (think self-healing foam) for a small patch on the sole in the midfoot area. You can see that area in the photos as the color is slightly different. The problem with this foam is that it is not puncture resistant like a hard rubber would be. This would not be so bad at all if the rock plate weren't only in the forefoot area. I was doing a bit of bushwhacking in Yellowstone and stepped down from a log into some tall grass and landed on a small piece of wood (not a razor sharp rock, not a needle, but just a semi-pointed stick), which punctured the shoe through this soft foam and went into the bottom of my foot. This was during a thru-hike, and was only my second day hiking in these shoes. The foam closed up around the puncture after i pulled the stick out, and the shoes were great otherwise, but my foot took over two weeks to heal. If you're sticking to dirt/gravel roads and maintained trails, this shoe will be absolutely wonderful, but if you like to get out into the woods and off the trails, make sure you watch where you step, or be really careful about only the forefoot contacting the ground when you're landing. I put some Superfeets in after this happened and the hard plastic on the bottom of those made me feel a bit better. But great customer service as always from Zappos, they really went out of their way to help clear up a delivery mix-up and get my shoes to me, which is no easy task during a thru-hike.

I'd also recommend: Salomon
