I've been in the market for a rain jacket for a while now, and I've spent way too much time researching. My criteria was that I wanted a "real" waterproof shell (meaning, Gore-Tex and taped zippers) that was always a nice looking enough to wear casually. I wanted enough room to layer, but an overall athletic fit and not a boxy, baggy jacket. Also, I wanted to spend less than $300 and not $500+ on an Arcteryx or the likes. The Triolet (especially on sale) fit the bill. The black color looked good (but the model on Zappos looks really awkward in it for some reason. What's with the arms out thing? When I received it, I was very impressed with the fit and feel of the jacket. If you're familiar with Patagonia apparel, you know they are well built and stylish, and this jacket is no exception. Here's the details (FYI: I'm 5'9" and 165, and ordered the medium): The black looks really good. If you want a jacket that can be worn casually and even look stylish, I'd suggest it. The jacket is just thick enough to be rugged, but is still lightweight. It's fit is perfect - just enough space to layer but not with extra material around the middle. Also, the length is perfect and comes to the hips. The hood is awesome. Completely adjustable and just fits great. My only complaint (and I think it is intentional) is that the arms are really long. They cinch up, so it's not a big deal, but without cinching they go to almost the ends up my fingers (and I don't have especially short arms or anything). This is so you remained covered even when reaching completely overhead, but for normal use it seems excessive. Overall: awesome jacket. Exactly what I was looking for.

I'd also recommend: Kuhl

Recent purchase. Good initial impression. I've owned my Patagonia Triolet men's size medium jacket for a month now. My first real Gore-Tex shell. 100% waterproof thus far. After years of owning other treated and laminate fabrics, which eventually need conditioning, I decided to invest in a world class waterproof and breathable fabric. The fabric seem heavier, stiff, and more durable. May need a little break-in. I would rather be dry on a cold rainy day. The pockets are lined with Gore-Tex. The benefit is it will keep critical items like your iPhone / smart phone dry. Zipper works smooth. Fits snug. I can still get a heavy polar fleece jacket under it for colder winter days or skiing. I came real close to buying the ARC'Teryx Beta AR. But, when I found the Patagonia Triolet on sale for a LOT less, I could not justify paying more for the same Gore-Tex fabric. As many others have pointed out, the helmet compatable hoods are pretty big. However, you have three adjustable sync points. The hood will sit up when synced. The construction and detailing are very good. I would consider the Triolet a good alternative to comparable ARC'Teryx Beta AR or Theta AR. Since the fabric seems a little stiff because it's new, I am not sure if I would jam it into a backpack. I would lash it to the outside of the backpack.

I'd also recommend: ARC'Teryx
