Not waterproof. A few minutes after receiving this bag, a thunderstorm came through town. I thought: perfect conditions to test the waterproofness of this bag, its major selling point. I stuffed the bag with paper and put it out in the downpour for 5 minutes. When I retrieved it, I found that the paper was soaked, and that more than half a cup of water was sloshing around inside. This bag might be OK against a drizzle; the fabric is waterproof. However, in a serious rain, water just ran right around the flap over the zipper.

I got this bag basically as a carry-on, and it works great. Fit well in the overhead bin. The feature that sets it apart is the backpack straps, which are comfortable enough considering its just a duffel bag and there are no waist or chest straps for support. We'll see how long this bag lasts, but it's giving me good use now. Can't comment on water-resistance.

Michael P...it's not supposed to be waterproof. Maybe you should learn the difference in waterproof and water resistant before you bash a product that does exactly what they say it will do. People like this just have to run their mouth about stuff they know nothing about...

About Patagonia
Patagonia's values reflect those of a business that started as a band of climbers and surfers who wanted to stay out as long as they can, doing what they love, no matter the weather. Patagonia's design approach to every product, from technical shells for snow and ice, to moisture-wicking underclothes, to everyday clothes, demonstrates a functional bias toward simplicity and utility. Quality is impeccable, and the guarantee lifelong.
Patagonia's love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of the planet. They use organic cotton; most polyester is recycled. They give moral support - and 1% of sales, $25 million to date - to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups in the U.S., Europe and Japan.
