An awkward design spoils this hip pack. You can't remove the water bottle without loosening a stabilizer strap, and the same goes for trying to access the storage compartment. Another problem is the width of the pack, as you can't really run or xc ski with it since your arms will hit the side of the pack on the back swing.

I find the Osprey Talon 4 perfect for day hikes of 2-6 hours. I substitute my favorite water bottles for the included 20oz bottles, but they seem fine (untested). Both bottles are accessible without removing the pack as are the divided sections (2 zippers) of the cargo area. There is room for my compass, Fox 40 whistle, monocular, and mini first-aid kit in the section closest to my back and I carry a couple of energy bars and trail mix in the outer section. The zippered pockets integrated into the hip sections of the belt are just right for an iPod, cell phone, or other small items desired close at hand. Adjusting/tightening the belt is accomplished after closing the snap together web belt ends by pulling adjusting loops on both sides for balanced tension. Besides the obvious benefits of a well engineered and constructed lumbar pack for carrying what I need on a day hike, the best thing I can say about this pack is that I almost forget I'm wearing it.

About Osprey
Their mission is to create innovative high performance gear that reflects a love of adventure and a devotion to the outdoors and the environment. Osprey defines success when it meets the demanding expectation of its most discerning customers. Through custom molding technology in the hipbelts, their packs ensure a comfortable and precise fit. Women’s specific designs are created to conform naturally to a woman’s body. Suspension systems such as the AirScape, AirCore, and AirSpeed make sure to absorb all types of shock while walking and to help you stabilize the load you’re carrying.
Based in Cortez, Colorado, Osprey has over thirty-two years of pack-making experience. This landscape provides all the employees with constant inspiration and a superb testing ground for their packs. However, you’ll find most of the employees, including Osprey founder/head designer Mike Pfotenhauer, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. By being close to the production facilities, Osprey has the ability to ensure fair labor standards and face-to-face relationships with the factories that build their packs, as well as experience cultural enlightenment and the design inspiration of a cosmopolitan city.
