Oboz Wind river boots are the best set of boots I have owned. They fall in that middle ground of a midweight boot perfectly. Although not a trail runner, they have similar fore foot cushioning, and not a heavy weight or mountaineering boot, they still have plenty of support and enough shank to protect your feet from the roughest off trail areas. I was extremely satisfied with their traction both bouldering and down scree fields. I have owned heavy weight boots like Montrail's Moraine AT and lighter boots like Lowa Klondike and Asolo Fugitive GTX. These are superior boots. Similar fit to the Lowa. Normally wear a size 12, but have Size 13 and fit perfect. Just got back from a trip in the Wind Rivers with extended uphill and downhill climbing without a leveling off. These boots easily handled 3500 feet elevation gain/loss over a couple of miles without any heel rubbing or toe jamming. In fact we jogged the last 3000' down.
Brands I'd also recommend: Lowa

I have tried quite a number of hiking boots in the past year, to no avail (Zappos can attest to that, they are super). The Oboz has been the only boot to fit my needs. The cushioning is excellent, especially in the forefoot (where most boots are lacking) and equally in the heel area. They are very stable and break in period is a couple of short hikes. The B-dry liner is breathable and very waterproof. The sole offers great grip on wet surfaces as well as dry. This is a boot that you can use for light day hikes as well as full packing for however long you want. They run 1/2 size small, so be aware of that.
Brands I'd also recommend: Can't say as I haven't found any to equal this boot

Like the Oboz "Wind River" trail runner/hiker this boot is really well made. Much superior to my Vasques, Merrell, or Asolo boots - especially for a medium weight hiker. Highly recommended! Only caution is: order a full size larger than your normal street shoe - they run a half size small and you will need the extra toe room on the downhill. Shoes wrap to the shape of your foot after a few good hikes. Great boot!

After I year of use, these are very comfortable from the start, light but ensuring a good protection of feet and ankles; never got blister even on long several days hikes. The only disappointment was with waterproofing. After 5 hours walking in very wet conditions, water did get in, not much but enough to have wet socks on the front half of my feet (something that never happened with my previous Goretex-protected Montrail boots). In conclusion, great boots for dry conditions, but not what I wanted in terms of waterproofing.
