About Nokia

Nokia – Connecting People

In 1865, Fredrik Idestam established a paper mill at the Tammerkoski Rapids in south-western Finland. This was the beginning of the multi-industry conglomerate Nokia. The company’s first electronics department was created in 1960 and originally sold and operated computers. Nokia’s first in-house electrical device, a pulse analyzer for nuclear power plants, was developed in 1962 and can be considered the precursor to Nokia’s mobile phones, Bluetooth® accessories, GPS devices and all other electronics the company sells today.

After the merger of Nokia Ab, Finnish Rubber Works and Finnish Cable in 1967, the Nokia Corporation began to take shape. In 1979, the mobile era for Nokia officially began and in 1981 the company developed the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), the first international mobile phone network. A serious of advancements in the mobile industry led to Nokia equipment being used to make the world’s first GSM call in 1991. After Jorma Ollila became president in 1992, Nokia began focusing on telecommunications. Nokia, at the vanguard of the mobile communications industry, launched a series of mobile cell phones in the 90s and became the world-wide leader in mobile phones in 1998.

In 2007, Nokia was recognized as the 5th most valued brand in the world. This global recognition was achieved through Nokia’s dominance in the mobile phone market. Nokia branded cell phones, digital phones, Bluetooth headsets and other Bluetooth devices have penetrated mobile markets in numerous countries. Even Nokia’s iconic ringtone, a few simple cords, is associated with the mobile phone industry as a whole. Nokia is dedicated to creating innovative and easy-to-use products for today and developing mobile products and accessories for tomorrow. Nokia – Connecting People.
