I've worn Nike Frees since they first came out and have always preferred the 3.0 because they're more flexible than the 5.0. I don't run much any more, but I walk, hike, and wear them when I travel. My feet mostly hate shoes and Nike Free 3.0 are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. I bought this pair even though they're 5.0 because they're white and I wanted white shoes that I could walk in on hard surfaces for hours every day. Turns out the 5.0 has changed a lot since my last pair (from 2011 and I still have them). They are more flexible than the old 5.0 (which have been worn) and both the toe box and the instep area are wider. For me, they're much more comfortable than the old version, so I'm happy, but if you're used to a more rigid, close fitting shoe you might not be. Another change is the inner liner - there is none. All of my older Frees (four 3.0, one 5.0) have a soft sock liner, but this new 5.0 is just the mesh over the top of your foot and toes, which I find very uncomfortable without socks. No problem for me, because I always wear socks, but many people I know run in them without socks, and I think the lack of liner would be a negative for them.

Loved the 2012 and 2013 versions of these, have been a Nike Free fan for awhile...but the newest version is so uncomfortable. Went for a run in these, big mistake. I couldn't wait to get home and take them off. Tried them again when I ran errands and went shopping for about 4 hours. My foot now feels bruised...have never had this problem with any other shoe. Definitely don't recommend these.

Excellent sneaker. Great for 5-10k distances. I used to have severe shin pain when running in clunkier sneakers but once I made the switch the pain disappeared completely. I did insert my own SuperFeet insoles for added support but I would do that with any sneaker. Fantastic shoe. Would buy again.

I bought these in hopes to replace my Nike Free Run 3.0s, they were by far the best shoes I have ever owned, but unfortunatly Nike stopped making them. After much debate I finally settled on these, and I have to say I am so disappointed that these do not live up to my expectations. The tongue that I knew would be a flimsy piece of foam is somewhat a bummer that it feels that the laces are too tight across the top of my foot, all the time. Also the top of the shoe where the shoe laces start digs into the top of my foot when I walk, but only on one foot, and the over all comfort is subpar compared to the 3.0s. The sole is light and foamy but does not seem to conform to my foot at all, it cups my heel but feels hard?! I am so disappointed. I wear my shoes 12 hours a day, I don't have time for discomfort. Not impressed.

I'd also recommend: new balance

Agree with previous reviewer - the 2012 and 2013 Nike Frees fit like a glove. But, they've ruined a good thing. Sole is less flexible, and the toe box upper is just terrible - square and too roomy, knit mesh is too stiff, and the rubber around the toe cap (there to lend structure) rubs against my toes with every single step. And, while I found the dark magnet colorway gorgeous in photos, in person it's dull and unflattering.
