My wife and I never intended to spend a lot on kids shoes, especially with the advise of our pediatrician to let the kids go barefoot as long as possible because shoes can dictate the development of their little feet. Our son went barefoot till he was about 3 and could probably run hot coals without a complaint, but when we got him athletic shoes that were firm and heavy, we could tell they effected his running (and I'm sure his feet). After my wife got a pair of Free Runs, we decided not to go cheap on our 4 year old's developing feet and got him the same foot flexing, extremely comfortable shoes we use. He loves them and wears them almost exclusively. Side note: I was a bummed that these didn't come with the 'stretchy' laces that some of the other colored Kids Free Run 2s came with.
Brands I'd also recommend: I'm a fan of Nike's running shoes, but you need to known your foot type (High Arch=Neutral Shoe, Avg. Arch=Stability..etc.) to buy whats best for you.

These shoes are perfect for my 4 year old he can easily get them on and off. He finds them super comfortable. They have a nice boxy toe to make room for wide feet.

We bought these for our 5 year old who hasn't mastered shoe-tying. He loves them and they are easy to get on and off. Plus he's convinced they make him run superfast! These shoes were super cool for about a week. Needless to say they didn't hold up well on the playground and now they are all beat up and ripped. If you have an even somewhat active boy, look elsewhere.
Brands I'd also recommend: New balance, sketchers
