  • Speed and stability can coexist, and do in the Distance S III from Newton®.

    Adaptation Period:
  • Adjusting to Newton running shoes will depend upon several factors including: your current running shoes, your running form, gait efficiency, as well as your speed and flexibility. Those new to natural running form, or those transitioning from a shoe with traditional cushioning will benefit from spending adequate time adjusting. This is because your body will need time to lengthen the muscles and tendons on the back of the leg and under the foot.
  • Newton recommends that first-timers walk in their shoes for several days to become accustomed to the level platform. Walking barefoot on safe and comfortable surfaces can also be helpful. Once ready, begin by introducing short runs of no longer than 15 minutes every other day. Gradually add 10-15 minutes as your feet and leg muscles begin to strengthen. If you experience soreness that persists for more than two days, reduce time in shoes immediately. Rest and ice the area until the soreness subsides, then slowly begin introducing time in shoes again.
  • A stability trainer designed for those looking for a daily trainer that is versatile enough for short- to mid-distance races.
  • Lightweight, breathable mesh and synthetic uppers.
  • Metatarsal stretch panels.
  • Heel lace lock.
  • 360 degree reflective hits for a visibility boost in low-lighting conditions.
  • Plush tongue and collar for added comfort.
  • Fabric lining supplies a soft step-in feel.
  • Action/Reaction Technology: A highly responsive, trampoline-like and engaging midsole cushioning that protects and loses less energy with each step.
  • High-rebound EVA.
  • Biomechanical Sensor Plate allows the foot to sense the ground promoting a lighter, more efficient stride.
  • Heel/ Forefoot Differential: 3 mm
  • High-abrasion rubber outsole wedge on lateral heel for durability in this high-wear area.
  • s.h.a.r.c outsole material in forefoot.
  • Imported.

I am a 68 year old male and run about 10 miles a week at a mid-9 minute per mile pace and have mild to moderate pronation problems. At my age injuries from running are frequent and equipment that is off a fraction of an inch can make things worse. I was running with Nike Structure 14 and ASICS GT2000. Those shoes have an elevated heal (12 mm+ heal to toe drop). If you try to mid-plant you will have to lean forward just a fraction to be able to get up and over the high heal. This puts an extra load on your calf muscles and Achilles tendon. I continually pulled my calf and Achilles as a result. I graduated to Brooks Pure Cadence with a 4 mm heal-toe drop and then to Altra Provision with zero heal-toe drop. The flat platform eliminated calf and tendon stress. However, both shoes were light on the cushioning. The Newton is the best of all worlds. 2mm heal-toe drop, very stable ride and excellent heal cushioning. All in an incredibly light 8 oz shoe. The red metatarsal pad under your toes gives the feeling that your toes are free floating when you first put the shoe on. A very strange sensation at first, but after a few runs you wouldn't have it any other way. It gives you a very stable mid-plant platform that allows you to stride through and push off very consistently with each step. Warning, they will tell you to take it easy at first. Believe them! The 2mm heal-toe drop will stretch your Achilles slightly at first. So take it easy until your muscles and tendons are used to the flat platform. If you are used to wearing a 10-12mm heal-toe shoe, I suggest wearing a Dr. Scholl heal pad at first to raise the Newton heal from 2mm to 6mm. Get used to that then after a week or so remove the Dr. Scholls pad and run another week lightly until you are fully used to a 2mm drop. After that you will be amazed at the performance of this shoe. I recommend purchasing a full size larger than your dress shoe size.
