The worst thing about this shoe is that it's a Newton. The problem, as I see it, is that it doesn't really behave like a traditional Newton because it lacks the forefoot lug "pop" like all other Newtons have. As a result, many people (not all) who wear Newtons regularly won't like them (see the Ginger Runner video review online). But people who don't regularly wear Newtons (like me) will never give them a shot because they assume it behaves like all other Newtons, which it doesn't. I think this shoe deserves a much wider audience than what I think it's receiving from trail runners. Frankly, I really like this shoe, and I would absolutely love it with a few minor tweaks. First, it is extremely well-built, which is surprising, considering how light the shoe is (10 7/8 oz. in a size 10.5; 11 oz. in a size 11). The construction is bomber, and the materials are extremely durable. Yet as the reviewer below noted, this also leads to some idiosyncrasies in fit. The fabric on the upper is stiffer than most, which means that the shoe can get warm in hotter weather. In addition, the toe box is nice and wide horizontally, which is great for letting the toes splay, but it has a lower ceiling than many shoes, which means that any folds in the fabric can create hot spots, especially on the tops of the toes. I'm kind of torn about this issue, since I really like the tight weave of the upper because it keeps very fine dust -- moon dust, as we call it here in Idaho -- from getting into the shoe. I'd hate to see Newton replace it with an upper with a looser weave because that would make it a far less useful for me. But a slightly higher toe box would be a great update. Second, this shoe has a fantastic midsole and outsole. It has just the right amount of cushioning for running 50M ultras, and the outsole is second to none -- durable and grippy. The problem I envision down the road is that the green forefoot lugs might be a little too hard over the long haul, and they might create pressure points on the balls of my feet. I think a slightly softer rubber would work better for me, although I admittedly don't know how big a problem this will be for me yet. It's important to note that none of these problems is a deal-killer, in my opinion, and I will likely use this shoe for all my ultras this season, including a 100-miler. This is after running in other shoes, such as the GoRun Ultra, the Hoka Rapa Nui 2, and the Nike Terra Wildhorse. The Newton BoCo AT provides the best mix of weight, flexibility, durability, structure, and cushioning that I'm looking for in a shoe. The problem with the low toe box I have addressed by stretching the toe box as best I can. Using a shoe tree, I shove a small rubber ball (diameter of a quarter) into the area just above the base of my big toe on each shoe, so the fabric is pulled really tight. Then I get the area wet and let it stretch overnight. Seems to work well. If the lugs give me a problem during longer runs, I'll fiddle around with insoles. A note on sizing: I wear a 10.5 in the Brooks PureFlow, and I take the same in this shoe. Fits true to size, in my experience. In short, a very good shoe.

I have exclusively worn Newtons for the past 7 years, so I am a fan. This trail running shoe is their best so far, with a very light weight and an outstanding tread. My one complaint is against the fabric/material used over the toe box: it is a little too thick and tends to stiffly bend or pucker, rather than conforming like cloth. This causes the material to push onto bottom of toes at the front, and pull the shoe down slightly off my heel at the back. If they put a standard mesh or cloth upper on top of this sole, they would have a perfect trail shoe.

I love Newton Running shoes. I've owned 4 pair of Motion's and they are solid and comfortable shoes that fit great and can reliably withstand hundreds of miles on the road. I was excited to try the BOCO's as my new trail shoe but found the design to be completely unacceptable. The toe box is too narrow. The seem below the lowest eyelets and the vamp is way to tight, no matter how you lace this shoe. A deal breaker for me and I do not have wide or thick feet. These were promptly returned after a multi-day break in period of wearing around the house. I returned them very disappointing as I thought these shoes looked awesome and I was hoping for so much more.

I'd also recommend: Altra
