Since the days of selling arch supports to police officers and waiters, New Balance has been a brand concerned with meeting the needs of the everyday athlete. In pursuing this goal, they developed an "Endorsed By No One" philosophy, which holds that a superior product will sell itself better than any superstar athlete ever could. Part of producing New Balance shoes and athletic clothing is manufacturing it to fit all widths and sizes, because a better fit produces better performance.
To ensure the best fitting, best performing shoes and clothes, New Balance focuses on improving their technology and production methods. A big part of that is maintaining five manufacturing facilities here in the United States where they continue to produce New Balance shoes and apparel that meet the standards they've employed for 100 years. Again, a lot of volume at the front of the shoe so it wrinkled when flexed. The support in the ball of the foot was too hard and felt as though it was raised!
I'd also recommend: Clarks Artisan, Wave, and Un-lines, Born (if you don't need orthotics), Brooks, Merrell (also if you don't need orthotics), some Ecco styles.

I was cheap and got these shoes instead of my usual new balance 804. Mistake. Not as good support, and the collar of the shoe gave me a blister when playing tennis. I had to buy the 804 two days later!

Comfortable for the most part but has a very roomy toe area. I think the front portion is too thick. I had to get a half size smaller than my previous pair of NB court shoes.
