This shoe prevented surgery. When I started working out, I had no idea about shoes, so I got the wrong ones. A year later, I had a painful neuroma between my 2nd and 3rd metatarsals and a bunion. A podiatrist wanted to cut on the bunion, but he seemed uncertain about why the inside of my foot hurt so badly. An orthopedic surgeon explained I had been "power walking" in a walking shoe instead of a running shoe or cross trainer. The overly flexible sole allowed too much bending in the foot. He recommended Saucony or New Balance. Since only New Balance came in my tugboat width, I bought a pair of these. Now, I can walk for miles without pain. I'm stuck with the bunion, however.
Brands I'd also recommend: Apparently New Balance discontinued 990

Finally a sneaker that fits me!!!!! Please do not stop carrying e to eeee width shoes for women! I bought 2 pairs of these sneakers. One I can wear with a heavy sock and/or insert and one with a thin sock. For years I have been searching for a sneaker in an e to ee width. FORGET ANY RETAIL STORE! Even other internet shoe stores. You are very lucky to even find there so called "Wide Width Of D" which is too, too narrow for my foot. Apparantely these stores claim they can't even special order e's for you. I was doing serious damage to my feet from wearing these D widths in a size which was to big for my foot. (to compensate for the width problem) A chiropractor said this is the reason my feet always hurt and I was damaging ligaments and tendons in my legs. Thank you So much!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brands I'd also recommend: I don't know. Haven't purchased anything else yet from you.

587's are the best! I have Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and must wear a UCBL (a very large orthodic) in my shoes due to severe deformity and supination. I searched for any shoe to accommodate this UCBL, to no avail, including SAS and PW Minor. No luck! They weren't wide enough (a "D" is NOT wide) or deep enough. But then I found the New Balance 587's! The UCBL fits in them perfectly, they are stable, and they come in E widths! Hurrah! Wonderful shoe for any of you suffering from Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease or wear a UCBL!!! Hint: Buy a size larger if you're wearing a UCBL.
Brands I'd also recommend: NONE!

I loved this shoe These are the best shoes I've ever tried. Most shoes, after only a week or two, would begin to cause my ankles to hurt. These shoes kept my foot and ankle straight, no pain at all. I will always buy them as long as they are available. Thank you so much for a great pair of shoes.

Tug-boat shoe - I was very excited when I ordered this shoe, but was heart-broken by its 'dollar store' look. I could not believe they cost so much and looked like I was wearing a rubber mallet on my foot. It was comfortable to wear at first, then slowly became unbearable. But I'm optomistic about them, I am going to try a different style.

NB 587 - The best fitting walker for my wide feet that I have found; no break in time, very comfortable, expensive and ugly.

A Great shoe for foot pain! This shoe was recommended to me for heel pain. It is a very comfortable shoe and the pain in my foot subsided some as soon as I put them on. After a few hours it was almost completely gone. They look just fine and low-key, which I like. Also, the sole feels different than a thinner soled shoe, but isn't that what we're paying extra for, a decent sole? Anyhow, I am very happy with this shoe and feel that the price is right for the quality.

Very comfortable running shoes for the overpronator - These shoes have great motion control with a cushiony feel. The wide toe box makes this a very comfortable shoes from the very first step. I definitely recommend this shoe to women who need a good motion control running shoe. Order a half size larger than you normally would if you use paddded socks.

This is the only shoe I can wear - I have crippled feet from two botched operations. My arch has fallen and these are the only shoes I have found that I can walk in all day without pain. They keep my feet in a more normal position and the broader toe area is especially appreciated.

Light Weight but Solid Support - This shoe has met my expectations. I wanted a light weight shoe, but I also want solid support for walking and jogging. They clean up nicely too. My dog got mud all over my shoes and they cleaned up nicely with mild soap and a rag.

My therapist recommended this shoe and I was hesitant to buy a pricey shoe thinking what if they don't help but after getting the shoes, very quickly, and walking in them, I am very satisfied it is unbelievable what a difference it made in my shins, and lower back I didn't hurt after walking 2 miles I would recommend these shoes to anyone who has a lower back problem and over pronation.

For over a year, I was having a terrible time with sciatica, I did lower back exercises, went to physical therapy, chiropractor etc. In November, I purchased a pair of New Balance 587s. Within a week, I was pretty much pain free. At first I didn't put it together with the new shoes, but when I didn't wear the shoes, I would start to get twinges. This shoe literally changed my life.

New Balance 587 - Delivery of my shoes was superb!! They were here within 24 hours. Since I need this type of shoe for corrective purposes your timely delivery was great! The shoe is comfortable and allows me to walk and even hike short distances. I would like it to be a little less showy, but it DOES WORK!! Thanks for your great service.

Excellent sneaker - I recently purchased these sneakers, and they are the best NB I have ever worn. I only buy NB, and these sneakers are comfortable right out of the box. There is plenty of room in the toebox, and there is good padding around the ankle and tongue. The full-bottom sole allows for continuous support throughout the walking cycle. I am very pleased with this product.

MY old sneakers--a 685 - I have old sneakers that were a 685. They were wonderful. I had three pair of them but now need new sneakers. I have been told they were discontinued. Is there any way I can get another pair or are these similar?

THIS SHOE SAVED THE DAY - I had just received the New Balance W 587 WB when my husband has a heart attack and was sent to a hospital in Seattle, three hours from our rural, retirement home on the Olympic Peninsula. I packed the car and followed him over there, grabbing my new shoes to wear. I had a two-week stay in Seattle and only had my new shoes with me. They saved my sanity and kept my feet in comfort the entire time, while I walked all over this large hospital and back and forth to my hotel. I am ordering another pair immediately!!

happy feet - Great shoe for wide feet. Toe box seems wider than any other new balance I've tried. Lots of room for my toes to wiggle. Pretty good cushioning although other styles seemed softer. Arch support/rollbar took some getting used to but after a few days I didn't notice it anymore. I have chronic heel pain and I won't say these shoes totally alleviate the pain while walking but they come pretty darn close for me.
