I bought these sandals because I wanted a closed toe sandal that could handle some light hiking in the Red River Gorge. I rock climb and I frequently throw these around at the crag. Step on them to keep sand off my feet, toss them to and fro, etc. They serve me well, but I expected more for the money. The bad: durability. The side of the sandal says waterproof. Okay, I felt safe hiking in this in some rain. A couple puddles shouldn't hurt. Then why did the tongue pull ring tear out in less than two months? If it s a loop that fits my finger, I'm going to tug on it. Merrell, these should be bomb proof! In this same length of time, I have noticed threads popping out here and there. I m fairly rough on them, so I suppose that's to be expected. The insoles will need replacing soon if you wear them with any frequency. They often pull out of the sandal when you're taking them off, too. Not a show stopper, but annoying. A stiffer insole should fix that. The elastic tension string does not distribute evenly when you first tighten them. Again, not a big deal, but you will need to fiddle with the elastics to equalize the pressure on the top of your foot. My feet stink by nature and these sandals were no exception. If it's warm, you can smell 'em. The good: comfort and utility. These sandals require little breaking in and fit snugly, especially when tightened. The traction is excellent.

Molds to foot -
Bought this shoe for my husband to wear while walking around Disney World. At first he was unsure when he tried them on, but after he wore them he enjoyed them and said they really molded to his foot. He has been wearing them to for leisure and power walking. Have required very little breaking in.

Keeps my foot cooler -
I'm running from Keens because they're so hot and they stink...
This is the closed-toe sandal I've been searching for. I give them 4.5 stars...
The stock sole-liners are pretty flimsy, (they might come out when you take the shoe off) but I wear them with better insoles with extra arch support. There's room for the better insoles, but if you have an extra wide foot you might go a half size up.

This is the second pair of these shoes I have gotten for my husband. He is on his feet all day and they are great. His feet get hot during the day so even in winter they work well for him. I give them a 5 star rating for comfort, durability, and looks.

Merrell Chameleon Cargo -
My work environment outlawed open-toed sandals so I bought these. I've owned several pairs of Merrell shoes and sandals and always find them comfortable. I've travelled (fly) in these sandals with socks and worn them to work without. Fit and comfort good either way. Like other reviewers, the velcro strap in back looks like it will ultimately curl and get worn. I got 8.5, my usual size, though recently changed my running shoes to size 9. My other Merrell sandals are size 9, not available in 1/2 sizes. So 8.5 is a bit snug.

Just okay - Perhaps I would have liked these better if I hadn't owned a pair of Keens first. I thought I would like the adjustable heel strap, but it leaves too much of the velcro exposed. The fit is a little looser than what I'd like. I have many pairs of Merrell shoes and I expected more from this brand.

Perfect sandal for my extra-narrow feet -
I have narrow, low volume feet, which can make finding shoes a challenge. The Merrell fits like a glove and the insole is super comfy. Great for day-to-day use, it's not out of the question that this product would work for day hikes.
