My husband and I bought Canyoneers for a trip to Utah's National Parks. Neither of us is into technical climbing. However, we are still young enough to enjoy hiking, and old enough to be concerned about falls. The shoes were terrific. It was like being a gecko: our feet stayed anchored even at fairly steep angles. They were comfortable, too. We didn't have much time to break them in, and we didn't get the hint of a blister. Two notes: they run a bit small, and if you go wading, they will take a day or two to dry out.

These are my second pair of Canyoneer shoes. The first pair served me well! The second pair is built strong, but I managed to break the rubber piece that holds the buckle on my first trip out. There is a lot of taking off and putting on when Canyoneering in the the wilderness of south eastern Utah. Other than that, the shoes fit great! I bought them online, too, so that is a plus.

Boots are good except for the cushioning. I would suggest buying an insert for them. I just hiked the Narrows river in Zion National Park and I could feel the rocks that I was stepping on. Other than the padding the shoe comes with I think they are awesome for water hikes.

These shoes are great for what I consider their design purpose - Ascending/Descending slick, water filled rock canyons. Places where a fall means serious injury or death potential. These are a combination of a cross training shoe with reasonable ankle support with gecko-like stick to the rock, in either wet or dry. If you are looking for a water bootie to wear in a kayak, these are not for you. But if you want to walk on granite as slick as glass, there is no better option out there. I too advise to wear a thin sock as some of seams can rub annoyingly. By the way, if you even look at the style category (or even worse the color), these are obviously not the shoes for you. Not to worry though, they look quite stylish when you're hucking off an 80' waterfall.
Other brands recommended by reviewer: Nothing better for their purpose, but anything w/ 5.10 rubber will do in a pinch

These boots were a birthday present for my husband and he loves them! They were comfortable out of the box with no break in period required. They have excellent traction and protect his feet and ankles from sharp rocks in or out of the water. His speed in negotiating Arizona's watery canyons has nearly doubled, so I guess I better get myself a pair, too, if I want to keep up with him!

These shoes rocked!!!
I wore these shoes on two occasions. Both times were at Zion National Park. The 1st time, it was during a regular hike. It was a 7.5 mile (dry) hike. The shoes were awesome then. Great grip on rocks and comfortable too. The weather wasn't hot so absorbing heat wasn't an issue. The 2nd time was a 16 mile hike through the narrows. A majority of this hike was through water which had numerous slippery rocks. These shoes had excellent grip even on those rocks. And the comfort was surprisingly good when it was wet, although I wore wet socks which I think added some more cushion. Overall, excellent shoes!!!!!!

I bought these for a trip doing slot canyons in Utah in and around Zion. I wore them with a 5mm neoprene socks which many guides recommend. Bit weird looking (seriously. yellow?). I was skeptical about the shoe. They also run small. I am 12 1/2 and wore a 14 (with the neoprene sock). Our 1st canyon was 19 miles long. Some puddles, some waist deep mud, some large and small boulders and some sandy desert. The shoe performed well in all conditions. My feet were hot during the desert phase but it was over a hundred degrees. We also used these to repel off rock walls, into and out of water and waterfalls and they worked great for that as well. I couldn't think of another shoe that would have done all the above as well. Overall very happy with them... and after miles of Utah clay they are no longer yellow.

Being new to canyoneering, I was advised to buy this boot for an AZ trip. Wearing a wet suit w/ neoprene socks, I ordered a size larger. Hiking, some climbing and transitioning between wet and dry conditions I commented to others, most of whom were the same shoe, that I'd never owned a boot so versatile. Rappelling down waterfalls gave remarkable traction and stability. Straps offered good fit throughout and they dried easily - in the desert.

Get the right size -
I just returned from 10 days of photography in the desert of southern Utah. The Canyoneer II is an excellent boot for any kind of rock, even sandstone (which is where I used them). I spent 10 days photographing various stoney landscapes with the Canyoneers. They were always sticky, comfortable, and warm.
The shoes are true-to-size if you are wearing regular socks. However, if you plan to use neoprene socks, buy one size up for 2-4mm neoprene, and 1 1/2 sizes for 5-7mm neoprene. A company that rents these out near Zion Natioinal Park recommends 1 to 1 1/2 sizes larger than normal as well. You might consider a size larger if you are going to use any type of thick sock. Purchasing 1 1/2 sizes larger not only fit the neoprene perfectly, it also avoided any painful mashing of my toes in front. A bonus - the neoprene socks kept the toes surprisingly warm - even while hiking around in a foot of snow.
The only drawback I found was that the straps are a bit stiff, especially when cold. They seem to be working-in a bit as time passes.
If you think you want this shoe, then get it! You won't be disappointed. After my Utah trip, I will be using my Canyoneers in more places than just rocks. They allowed me to not worry about my footing while carrying two pro DSLRs, a tripod and other gear.

Absolutely will order from ZAPPOS again. Ordered one day and received them the very next day. I bought these in black and chocolate and love them. I might order them in oatmeal. Highly recommend these shoes.

I bought these for their wet/dry Stealth Rubber grip on canoe trips. They're pretty stiff - more boot than shoe - and I started sockless so be warned. Either break 'em in first, wear mid-thickness socks or suffer the hotspot consequences. You don't need to open the front strap to get in and out. I thought, as an amphibious shoe, they'd have more drainage channels but this didn't seem to cause performance problems over a short trip. They should improve with use.

Great shoes. Grip well. Just trying to get used to the rub around higher ankle, other than that, they are great.

Review of Five Ten Canyoneer 2 -
Do what they're supposed to do: allow wading in creeks and rivers, entry to or exit from kayaks and canoes without slipping. Pretty edgy styling and color--something a bit stealthier would be good.

Great Boot for River Hiking in the Smoky Mountains -
I have used these boots in the rivers of the Great Smoky Mountains and love them. No pain when slick river rocks meet the ankle bone or when toes get wedged in rocks. This is a great boot for "river hiking". I appreciate the extra ankle protection! The sticky soles do well on very slick river rock.

Buckle System -
They have improved the support and draining system, but the buckle belt still needs improvement. Why? Rope gets tangle with the belt. About the rest, now is a better shoe not only for walking but also for climbing and down climbing in the wet rocks.

 | | Dear Zappos Customer Service, You are just great! Thank you for upgrading this order for priority shipping. I also wanted to send a much belated thank you for a service you did for me about a year ago. At the time, my son broke his leg very badly and we needed some "basketball breakaway pants" to put over it so he could go out of the house, as the cast was quite large. We couldn't find them anywhere, but my mother found them on your website. She called to order the pants and when she told you of our situation you sent them immediately on overnight delivery at no charge to us. While that may seem like a small thing to you, it was a HUGE thing to us and we were grateful beyond measure. Thank you for your kindness. I have been a devoted customer, will continue to be and will always recommend you when I can to friends and family. God bless you and I hope your business thrives. Kindly, Allyson T. | | ~ Allyson T., October 26 2009
