I bought these in a men's size since the women's Mephistos don't come in wide widths. I can't believe I spent so much for shoes, but my sensitive feet are very happy. They are very comfy. I got a size big enough so I can wear them with thin black socks too. I will be taking these to Italy by the way. For some reason the black is more expensive than brown, but I had to get black for Italy!

Fantastic sandals!! These are the second pair of Mephisto sandals we have purchased. The comfort level of these sandals and the quaility of construction is unsurpassed by any other sandal or manufacturer. Truly worth every penny!

Best sandals ever!!
I am 70 and travel a lot. A comfortable pair of sandals is an essential. The Sam is it. They are turning out to be the most comfortable shoes I own. I wear them everywhere. VIVA MEPHISTO

Mephisto makes great shoes. So last year when I bought the Mephisto Sam (Tan) sandal I couldn't wait to purchase a Black pair.

Mephisto Sam Sandals -
I bought a pair of these in 1997. I am on my fifth pair of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn (and they are indeed sandals). I wear them almost exclusively year-round until the snow is too deep.

Best shoe I have ever worn, and I am 58 -
I already have one pair of these. I have worn them through trips to France and Italy, walk about 2 miles everyday and bicycle in them, have used them from late spring through early autumn. Good with or without sox. Feet stay dry, the sole provides fantastic support and a perfect stride.
They look great with slacks, shorts or jeans.

Odor -
This shoe is great, except after couple of months of wear the sole of the shoe has a strong unpleasant odor. Never had a problem like that before.

"Investment" decision is a good one -
Before buying these shoes, I read every single review (there were a LOT...99% positive). We can be added to that list. Big investment but well worth it. I didn't tell my husband the price, but he said it didn't matter. He really LOVES them. Zappo's was GREAT, as I needed them ASAP, and they were on our porch the next day!

Absolutely fantastic!
I have wanted a pair of these for years, but ringed at the cost. I took the plunge and was greatly rewarded! These are some of the best sandals I have ever worn. They are beautiful and super comfortable, especially without socks. The width is perfect; roomier than most fisherman sandals. You can wear these for hours and forget you're wearing anything! They would be perfect for those places where sandals are not allowed. Put on a pair of matching socks, and you'd never know! I plan on getting a pair in brown as well. If you wear a 44 (11US) in Birkenstock, a 12US in Chaco, or an 11US in Teva, you will need a 45 (12US) in these.

Great Shoes for the warmer season -
I love my Mephisto Sam. It really feels as well as my other Mephisto Shoes. Mephisto Sam is much nicer than my old Mephiosto Sandals I own. The feet are protected because of the extra leather. The heels feel sturdy. They are great without socks in the park for a longer walk.
Since I am 72 I hate to expose my naked feet and toes. I like the comfort of the cooler feet without the embarrassment.
Sams are great walking sandals!!!

My husband, Lee, has been wearing his one pair of black sandals for years now. I only bought him new ones because he mentioned he would like a pair of brown ones. While his black sandals are old they still have much wear left. He has a very difficult time finding shoes to fit his foot comfortably. This has been his best shoe.

Great sandals. Half the year I wear nothing but. After three/maybe 4 years they show little wear other than the fine inner lining and the soles. And despite being my daily wear the brushed leather is still amazingly soft. Comfort has only been affected by worn heels just in last couple months. The very fine dust of Athens this summer also got them looking scruffy. It probably wouldn't be a problem with Grain but I'll buy the brushed leather again if I can find them.

I own two pair of Sams. On burshed leather and one black leather. Excellent confort and shock disapation. It is interesting to note, that I ordered both pair in my regular size 11. They fit well out of the box and required no break-in. Thanks for a excellent sandal that can be worn casual or dress.

Felt great straight out of the box. No break-in time required. I concur with other reviewers that the sandal is one size larger than my normal size. This sandal is well crafted; there are no unfinished edges or seams which can chafe when worn without socks.

Great look and feel.
This is a very sturdy sandal with excellent holding properties. I would very much caution that I ordered a size SMALLER than I usually buy because of other's comments about Mephisto sizing. They fit perfectly well, even though they say they're a full size smaller(9) than I usually wear(10). I would have preferred a velcro closure, as in some of the Teva sandals, for a better fit instead of the buckle, but they do fit well and are very comfortable to wear.
